Message Subject: Best reel for Double 13s

Surely a Shimano Trinidad is more than adequate to pull and even burn double 13s. However, it is beyond my budget at this point. I've heard many say that Calcutta 400 TE is excellent for pulling double 10s. Some say that Abu Garcia Revo Toro Winch is awesome on double 10s as well. Daiwa Saltis is another one to consider; nonetheless, how well would those three perform with double 13s? Any suggestions?

Posts: 127 | I don't mean to be the guy to deviate from your selections, but I would look for a used Trinidad, or try to find the previous generation (gold model) new. Should have no problem finding one in the same price range as a TE or Toro on ebay. Otherwise, go with a TE - has the power to do it, but you won't have the option to burn.

Posts: 752 | IMHO I would get a Used Trinidad or 700 TE if you want to bring in 13 with some speed. The Saltist is also a solid option if you want something new but in all liklihood it may not last as long as either of the two Shimano reels if they are properly maintained (even used). Its still a great reel and works well on big blades its just not as bomb proof as a 700TE or Trinidad.

This is what I was going to say. I've used the 700, and it is enormous, but it's a great reel and not too hard to use. I've since sold it for greener pastures and now use Trinidads. You can find 16N's for sale right now as alot of us went to 16NA's and dumped our gold reels for silver ones. They're out there. Bottom line is there's no substitute for "enough" reel. The 400's will work on the blades, but you've got to add a power handle to be comfortable and they won't ever have the speed.

Posts: 1270 | The little I have thrown double 13's I didn't find them any harder to retrieve than a double 10, I think it has as much to do with blade angle as blade size. That being said any reel used for double 10's would be fine for double 13's. If you really want to burn them then one of the moster reels in in store for you but if you plan on retreiving them more sensibly then any reel in the 4.5 -5.5 gear ratio should work fine.

I use them for Cowgirls, Super Models, Mammoth Sues, Pounders.

Now if you need a reel to burn DCG get a SHIMANO TRINIDAD 16NA, but if U don't want to spend alot of $$$$$ look at the OKUMA CORTEZ CZ10CS this reel retails for $129.99 has a line pickup of 43" and the best part of this reel is it has a EXTERNAL MAGNETIC CAST CONTROL SYSTEM for casting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Dawia Saltist has NO CAST CONTROL that is Y it backlashes so easy. Attachments ---------------- t90_x2_63321827cb2eda209eff4d389d78ae1a.jpg (20KB - 214 downloads)

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | My thoughts are I'm not going to cast my SHIMANO TRINIDAD 16NA that weights in at 19oz and does not have a level wind to slow roll DCG 10-13 when a TORO WINCH that weighs only 10oz and has a cast control system with a level wind, that I can cast all day and night without my hands wanting to fall off. I think U have to have 2 reels. Also on the lakes I fish the Muskies don't want a DCG 10-13 BURNED but only a few times a year.

Posts: 21 Location: Wayzata, MN | The Curado 300E / 300EJ is another great reel to look at if you don't want to spend Trinidad money, want a lighter reel or feel the need for levelwind / thumb bar. It pulls 13's great and can burn them too. It's a nice low profile reel that fits well in your hand. I've got mine on a Sling Blade. Feel free to flame away....

I own both of the above mentioned reels and I don't trust pulling anything above a dbl 8's with them. I mean I could use a stock abu 5600 for dbl 10's but that doesn't mean it is a good idea.

To each there own, but both reels the Curado E and the EJ are not made for DCG10-13 both are great at picking up slack line fast, like with top water baits or jerk baits. The E has a 6.3:1 gears and the EJ has 6.9:1 gears, the Toro in 5.4:1 or the Winch 4.6:1 is a far better choice for reeling DCG10-13. If U want to burn them U will have to get a reel like a Shimano Trinidad that has a line pickup of 46" and a very long power handle to really burn a DCG.

Posts: 315 | Pikemaster knows what he is talking about....Yes we can all agree that the trinny is the BEST possible reel to burn any blades including 13's!!! But which reel is best for slow rolling them after dark when you dont want to worry about a non-levelwind reel?? a Toro winch is the correct answer. And I had no clue the Cedros star drag was not available yet...they have had that reel on on their website for what seems like a year and a half already!
