I started packing a box for the opener last night. I figured I would start with a Bulldawg or the Madusa since I picked some up at the shows over the winter. Ran into the problems after packing my fave bucktails & spinnerbaits. What else I should pack? Musky Treat will go, but I'm stumped on what elst to bring just in case???

I want to pack very light since I will be the back of the boat bit@h, so a small box & 2 rods is all I'm bringing.

What lures do you start with?

I would also pack a baby shallow raider and a small topwater if the weather gets hot.

I only ask because depending on where your fishing, your opener could be this weekend in 40 degree water...might have a slight effect on what you want to throw.

I also pack light on waters I'm framiliar with because it eliminates underlying confidence tribulations so commonly acquainted with too wide a spectrum of options. 6" Slammers, Series 500 Reef Hawgs, MMT gliders, and a select 3 or 4 bucktails (small & large) are my usual make up my southern opener arsenol. I suppose I'll let one more cat out of the bag and reveal last years opener powerhouse on my side was the Long Tale Tackle Little Shot bent arm spinner bait.

Unless it gets below 32 from here until opener I doubt water temps will be that low. Last time I checked the temps on Wingra they were just breaking 50 degrees.

How could you guys possibly know what you are going to throw until you get on the water? Aren't we supposed to read conditions???

Um, you do know there are quite a few states where you can legally fish muskies right now? So in theory they already had their "openers"....my "opener" trip was a month ago. Not to mention his location says illinois, so what opener would he be speaking of exactly?

I love Wisconsin! Our Family has a cabin in the Tomahawk area & I live/work 3 min from the state line. The only thing I dont like about Wisconsin is the Packers!
The opener for Wisconsin is like a holiday for a bunch of us & we talk about it all winter long. Sure we can fish Illinois, but it's not the same for me. Planning trips up North can be as much fun as the trip itself sometimes. Reading maps, what lakes to hit, lure choices, gear prep, all of these things keep the interest at a high level. Gets the kids excited too.. It's getting close so I get a little twitchy as the wife would say.. Still wish the KY derby was not the same day, but it is what it is..

Saftey first & best luck all..

LOL well since the original poster stated they will be fishing Wingra for the opener and my post stated the water temps of Wingra I would be talking about Wisconsin's opener of course, I figured it didn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.

Geezus crimony, brain child award. My reply about 40 degree water was a response to the original poster's comment of "impressed" and a degree of sarcasm he seemed to imply with it. I was just clarifying why I asked and you decided to poke your smart little head in for no reason. Gee, you're so smart, keep patting yourself on the back...DIRKA! Ebay degree FTW?

For the Wingra Opener

Twitch baits-Slammers, Shallow Raiders or Crane baits in 5 to 6-inch.
Glide baits- Undertakers, Baby Wabulls, Reef Hawgs and Phantoms.
Bucktails-Rizzo Wizz, Boo Tails, Mepps, Lungen tails
Rubber-Dawgs
Line Bait- 7 to 9-inch Suckers

Colors will depend on water clairity and weather conditions.
Lots of action on this pond. Multiple fish days are very common.

My favorite by far for spring is the six-inch Jake. Then Jointed Baby Depth Raider. Twitching both. Rattle Trap for a change of pace (3/4 oz.)

For topwaters, I learned early on, a Topbuster or Topper Stopper is hard to beat - Make sure it's tuned though!

If I was to fish Wingra on opening day, here is everything I'd bring:

- jointed x-rap, clown
- shallow dawg, celery
- 1 oz CJ's spinnerbait, white
- small shumway flasher, brown/copper
- suckers
- brats
- BEER!
