Those of you with experience throwing the double 13's am I going to need to buy a new reel. I haven't had any problems throwing 10's with Lunas and Calcuttas, so will these reels still suffice for dub 13's?
thx,

dan

Dan,
Believe it or not, the 13's don't pull that much harder than the 10's. So much talk of specialized reles, in my opinion you'll be fine. I've been using Lunas for 2 1/2 seasons throwing big blades and not a glitch. You don't NEED a winch, but many like the 2 pound reel to make it easier and to increase speed. I had to crank the 7000 too fast . The Luna is my 1st choice. Steve

I mean isn't there a law of diminising returns somewhere along the line, where the supposed increase in fish-catching-ability is outweighed by the fishibility of the lure? Buying a big reel for big baits is fine, but 'ya still gotta cast 'em and figure 8 'em. When you have to spend $400 on a rod and reel to throw a lure that you can only handle for 1/2 hour [...] ya gotta wonder if you aren't better off making more casts for a longer period of time with a slightly less effective lure

no one's forcing you to use them...

Yessir, the Luna 300. I've had many 14 hour days chucking 10's and I palm the reel. The lower profile of the Luna (due in part to the recessed reel foot) allows me the control(of the rod) without the fatigue. It's necessary to balance the combo as well. That's why I have longer handles on my 9'+ rods too. Some of my buddies remember "the claw" from a few years ago. Not anymore. Nothing's bulletproof, but it works for me. Steve

steve, what do you mean you had to real the 7000s to fast.I have a 7000 5-3 and it picks the line up alot faster than my st croix 300,which I was told has the same parts as a luna in the 07s.I thought my 7000 burned the 10s great, some days I had to real slow when I wanted to slow the bait down a bit.

My feeling was that the 5.3:1 gear ratio made pulling these baits much harder physically. Went to the 4.1:1 in an older 7000 and had to crank waaaay too fast to get the speed I wanted.Went back to the Luna. I've done this twice. Had to give 'em another chance. I tried the old(Swedish made) 7000 early this summer and blew the worm gear and pawl in a day. Tried the new 7000hsni or something like that(They're awesome, is all I heard) and blew that one in a weekend. No more 7000's for me. The benefits don't outweigh the costs(literally and figuritively) has been my experience.Again, no reel is bulletproof but I'm " leavin' the dance with who brought me. " Steve

I was thinking about buying a 7000 HSN tomorrow. I see Steve does not care for them and will look at a Luna 300 also. Any comments from those of you that own a 7000 HSN? On the fence now with Steve's comments. Thanks Steve

Just want to buy a good reel to throw the double 10s and the new 13s for 6-10 hours with little effort. Also woudl like a reel with the thumb release.

I love the 7000IHSN. The two I had last the whole season. They needed to be serviced though before next year.

I picked up a 7000iC3 last year and have no complaints. I would highly recommend going this route over the HSN. Higher gear ratios equal more problems when it comes to the big baits. I've heard about a lot more issues on the 7000iHSN as compared to the iC3. From everything I've heard about the Luna, I don't think you can go wrong there either. I believe the Luna is about 7 ounces less than the 7000 as well, which could help on the fatigue factor.

I thought my Luna did a great job throwing the big blades. Can't speak to the 13s but it handled the 10s just fine. It will take some getting used to the weight and overall size of the 7000, but if you can handle it then by all means. Plus with the Luna you can switch baits up and throw something that requires twitching/ripping whereas, IMO, you can't with the 7000s due to the non-existent instant anti-reverse...

It's all personal preference. SJ loves the Luna for big blades...I've thrown them with a Luna, and I hated it. Way too much work with that gear ratio.

I'm mostly a 7000 guy.

I threw big blades for the last part of this year with a Tekota 600. Loved it.

If you're looking for a good compromise I'd go with the Okuma Induron. The 5.1 gear ratio is a good combination of speed and power for pulling big blades. It shot way near the top of the list of my favorite big blade reels after a short time of using it. Has a thumb bar too.

Just good genes man...hehehe

One more thing about the 7000's. When I say 7000 for big blades I am talking the regular 7000, not the HSN. The HSN is not a bad reel, but it just is not made for the big blades. The larger spool diameter actually makes it even harder on the reel and the angler when pulling big blades. You'd be better served with a 6500 in this case...same gear ratio, but the smaller spool diameter translates to more power in the reel.

Why don't Daiwa just make a Luna 700(7000) size reel? It seems the market is there. Kdawg

The exception to this would be the 7000iC3 which has Instant Anti-Reverse.

And, no offense, but wasn't it you (esox50) that said in a prior post that the Luna was not good for ripping because the anti-reverse went to crap?

I use a 400TE with a Trinidad TN 10 power handle, not many reels in this size have HEG gearing. Not many reels have the over size drive and pinion gears like the TE. All TE reels come with a Platinum Service Plan, which gets U 1 free clean and oil and 2-3 1/2 off clean and oil coupons, plus shipping lables with a 48 hour turn around in off season. My TE is on it's 6 season !!!

Luke,

Unless Daiwa fixes the instant anti or clutch mechanism I would not recommend the Luna as a designated rip/twitch reel where the only pressure it's put under is through those techniques. HOWEVER, if you don't rip/twitch constantly or are too lazy to switch rods and want to put on a ripping bait and toss it with the Luna it will probably handle it just fine. Moderation is key, and there is a fine line between just enough and too much in terms of blowing the instant anti.

Perhaps I should clarify the previous statement: My POINT was that it is versatile enough to handle a plethora of techniques whereas the 7000HSN or older 7000 models, IMO, are not suitable to rip/twitch techniques 1) because of no instant anti-reverse (except on the 7000iC3) and 2) because of their sheer size. When talking about the Luna and 7000s (minus iC3) and versatility I'd choose the Luna over the 7000.

With all that said I will be picking up an Induron this show season and put it under a battery of tests next season...

Baldy,
So if one had to buy a 7000 would you go with the 7000IC3 then for big blades over the rest of the 7000's? If you had a to choose between a IC3 and an Induron which would you choose?

My personal choice would the the 7000 iCS Pro Rocket. Built like a tank.

Induron versus 7000 is a tough one...the 7000 is a little more powerful, but if you palm the reel and like a little smaller reel then the Induron should get the nod
