Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Anonymous Muskie Cops. 'She was 49.5" but I swear was 35# for sure. Rick Lax did a great replica for us. Still have to get my 50". Maybe next month in Mille Lacs.' See the word REPLICA??? Tturn, no worries, these guys sometimes lose perspective. Nice fish, sir. Now go get that 50, and have Lax do a Replica of that one, too.

Posts: 8781 | Well, you know Steve... Replica, skin mount, what's the difference, right? He shouldn't have even taken the fish out of the water. In fact I think we need to pass legislation that states that any intentional muskie angling must be done using soft rubber-like lures, made of vitamin fortified nutrient rich digestable materials similar to what would be found in live bait, and that no lures be made with hooks, or other sharp objects. In fact, I think it's high time we stopped fishing for muskies. It's the only way to guarantee one never gets hurt or killed. Maybe we should start some sort of fountation! I know, let's call it "CRAP MAP" Citizens for Respectable Angling Practices for Muskies And Pike.... We need to be at one with the muskie, nevermind the fact that any one of them would eat you if they were big enough.

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | TTurn, Thanks for making that clear, I was arguing with a couple purists last night because they were jumping to (I wish I could say what I want to say here) 'conclusions'. Addict, sorta like bird watching?

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | So, was that fish actually caught RIGHT in front of your house, or did you need to run home quick for a camera or something? If it was right in front of your house you really are one of the luckiest men on earth to not only live on a lake, but live just yards from where trophy fish hang out! I've always wondered how many muskies a guy could catch in a year if he had the chance to get out for just 30 minutes before a big storm, after work most nights, early in th morning for 2 hours and then taking a nap when you're done etc. You don't adopt college kids do you? EA, if musky fishing was like bird watching EVERYBODY would be seeing 60 pounders. Probably see several that size in one outing.

Posts: 91 | I have never personally kept a Muskie but when guys start harping about it I always remember Tony Rizzo talking about trophy lakes that have become action lakes with no bigger than 40"ers in em when they really use to produce some giants. Who is to say how many big fish a body of water can feed. Every lake has its limit and if they all have 5 fish per acre ie. wingra in madison, then you would never see anything big.To each his own I guess. Before I a broke the 40" mark I checked with Al Smith in Boulder Junction and Rick Lax to see if either one of them had any lower fortys mounts or replicas that needed a home so when I did break that mark I already knew that Al Smith had a similiar sized fish that I would put on my wall at home. Cause you know every taxidermist has a number of fish in there shop for whatever reason were left behind or used for the shows and it seems a shame not to put em somewhere that thet can be enjoyed.

Posts: 91 | When you can hang out around the house (vacation house)all day with the boat already in the water and you are just keeping an eye on the barometer, or the sky, or you just get that feeling that the morning sun may have just slightly warmed a western shore line and you should check it out you really can increase follows and hookups. Last light, first light, solunar and fronts might help either double your catch rate or cut time you spend chasing these girls in half, I prefer the former.

Posts: 311 | Some people do not like replicas because it is not the fish YOU caught, well their right its not....BUT, a replica is a symbol that reminds you of that special day forever, such as where you were, who you were with, all the events that took place, etc. A replica is MORE than just a fish on the wall..........A skin mount will do the same.......But, with a replica, that fish is still swimming and making memories for MORE THAN ONE angler........A skin mount wont do that

Posts: 91 | I use to think the same thing but I do agree it is not the specific fish that is so important. The whole experience of muskie fishing is so broad with so many people and places and hopefully lots of fish boated that to have a replica up for someone to see and spark a conversation or tell stories about does not at all miss the mark. If you are too worried about having the exact fish on the wall that you caught then you probably haven't caught enough fish. With the great pictures you can take with digital cameras now you could even consider a great photo a trophy, I don't think everything needs to be mounted.

Posts: 42 Location: Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin | Tturn - in reply to the trophy potential of a lake with lots of numbers, I agree mostly, but I think that you generalize a little too much. True Wingra is primarily a numbers lake, but there are 50" fish in there too. I know of a couple of guys that fish there that have caught multiple big fish there. They just choose to keep those catches quiet, to keep the lake from being over run by boats. Oops, maybe I should not have let the cat out of the bag.

Posts: 8781 | Absolutely. But that wouldn't tell the whole story, now would it? We're ALL "fishermans". Some of us are fishermen who are conservationists. Some are fishermen who are C&R advocates. Some are elitists, some are purists, and some are just plain $^%&^& NUTS. Personally, I like to know who is who and be able to call them as such. But then you weren't asking ME were you?
