What a day for muskie fishing the first day was. Rain, wind, and cold all day. The rain started around 6am and ended around 4pm. The second day was cold and sunny with light wind.

The first day two fish were boated. A few teams had fish on and came up empty. We were one of those teams. I had a low to mid 40's fish eat a jerk bait on the second pull, let her have it twice and the fight was on. With a net ready and the fish almost close enough to bag her, she went straight up and tossed my bait back at me. What a slap in the face that was. We raised 10 more fish with two pushing the upper 40's.

The second day was high skys and cold with little wind, 4 fish were caught, weed edges seemed to hold the most fish. Bull Dawgs caught three fish and a 8 inch Jake scored one. The action was very good till about 10am then slowed for us. We moved 7 fish Sunday on Suicks and Jakes. Most of the follows were slow and low, we tossed back Bull Dawgs on them and crank baits with no responce. We were on fish but cold not get them to eat, you would think a nice slow rubber bait would have worked. Well it did for the winners.

All in all a great place to hold a championship, plenty of good spots to fish. The only thing I would have changed is I would have stayed at Break on the Lake. Very nice place to stay and great people. Birch Villa is great place as long as you get a new cabin. Ours wasn't.

Next year the chanpionship is in New York, I think I might have to pass on next year. I would love to do it again with the lakes picked for the qualifiers. New York is just a bit far, I think we need a East/West divisions and take the top 50 teams from each to go the the finals.

BOY DID THE WEATHER SUCK, esp sitting in a boat for 9 hrs on saturday. Wouldnt have been bad if Duck and I were at least casting to keep moving, but jigging was all we could do.

I fished in the same kind of weather in Madison qualifier, but wasn't half as miserable fishing in it as I was sitting.

Unfortuneatly didnt measure a fish...2 were caught on both sides of us, but not in our area.

Congrats to all who made it to the championship and to the winners!!

Sorry to hear that the weather & the fish weren't cooperative...
Were any fish caught in the reeds where Sluggo boated that 50"?

The reed bite was just finishing up as Muskiefirst made it up to Cass Lake at the end of September.

My partner did raise a nice low 50's fish 100 yards South of that spot, on the weed edge, at the start of the break. I was with Sluggo and took the picture of the 45.5 he caught. The 50 came from the same area.

Lots of big fish in Cass, average size of the fish I raised this year on Cass is around 47 to 48 inches. Not a numbers factory but a true trophy fishery. I will be back !!!

Cass Lake is a great lake to fish for muskies. Definately not a numbers lake, but a true trophy lake. We managed to boat 2 prefishing (32" and 47") and only a 40" Northern on Saturday. We fished mostly steep breaks next to reeds (2' to 40' within a cast length). I heard of 1 person that had a follow that was the biggest fish he had ever seen. He said it was as wide as his Lakewood and wouldn't even start to guess the length.

Overall, a great event at a great lake. Only 10 more months until we return for the BIG event. Now it's time to sucker fish and relax.

Mike

How confident are they on those dates and locations, we were discussing the trail on sunday when I was fishing with a guy who fished the whole trail this year. I saw those locations and dates in the Musky Inc 2004 calender, they didn't have the May's location identified, but the other sites were on the calender. I know that traveling to New York is one long ride to fish. Also, I know tonka is still in question because of the permit issue in MN. Next years trail locations look great, but how does everyone feel about hauling boats out to New York to fish if they make it to the invitation.

Good luck

Mike, sounds like you gave it your best shot anyway. Congrats to the guys that did boat fish during those tough conditions.

It does not bother me to much. Unless it is like New York City NY. Upstate NY and Cave Run are about the same distance from Madison.

Yeah, I wasn't real excited when I saw Shelbyville or New York.

Makes for a couple more long trips next year, assuming we make the invitational.

Although, Tonka is only 45 minutes for me, so that helps.

Troyz - The dates should be solid in the Mukies Inc calendar.

Can anyone enter these tournaments?
If so, how much is the typical cost?
I heard Tonka is on the list next year, I plan to go to Cave run, so why not fish in my backyard and make a PMT trip to Cave Run for tournament time?

Can I just fish 2 events? And what is neede to get to the next round of events?

Just wondering!

Tahoe....all rules and stuff are here....http://www.promusky.com/

You only need to fish 2 events to qualify for the championship, well actually fish at least 2 events and get enough points to get into the top 50...OR.......win an event.

Lake Chautauqau in New York may be a long drive but good, no I mean great Musky water's are worth it!!!

For this Northern lL / South Wisconsin boy it's really not much further then driving to Cass Lake.

Congratulations to Steve Imhoff / Clark Bailey for the win at the Championship.

Awesome job Jason & Tony for taking Top Gun.

Anyone thinking of getting in on the PMTT trail should. You can learn "years" worth of knowledge in just one season.

The PMTT is not a bunch of big headed snobs, in fact I have never ran across anyone that was like that. Almost all of the trail teams will talk and share info before tournys, well, not all info, general info. Most teams know that patterns change with the weather, how you addapt to the changes is up to you.

Lake Chautauqau in New York is a long drive but so is Cass and Cave Run. I would drive to either one because they are great places to hold a tourny.

My family and vacation is the only thing that will keep me from doing it again next year. Who knows maybe I might be able to pull it off.

If your thinking of doing it, JUST DO IT !!!

A great thing to do is meet other teams and share costs....

What a frustrating tournament. Midge and I might have screwed up by targeting one fish all day Sunday. She would have been worth it though. We had her up three different times. This was a VERY large fish. I did manage to get a 31" just after the big girl stopped by...scared the &*($% outta me because I thought it was the big girl.

Saturday's rain was tough and seemed the fish shut off for us after it started to rain hard 9:30ish....

A big thank you goes out to Break on the Lake for having us and helping sponsor the championship. Julie and Steve Ballou are top notch resort owners!!!

One last thing.... remember the championship is a free entry tournament! Take a look at MuskieFIRST's outing on Chataqua 2 years ago... I remember 60 some boats catching 75+ fish??? Including three over 50??? Not positive on those numbers but I know they are close. I can only hope to be able to make that drive.....

The PMTT has other exiting announcements coming soon!

Tap, my thoughts exactly. Now, I don't fish the PMTT, and I can understand fishing different waters. However, if they are going to go to differenet waters, then they should perhaps think about skipping the Cave, Eagle River, and Shelbyville, and go somewhere else, too. But, as I don't fish it, I guess my opinion isn't going to count very much.

I think the $$$ has a lot ot do with where they go. I know Kentucky loves to see the PMTT back every year. Eagle River is also a very good sponsor for the PMTT.

Sponsor help is a big part of the choices. Thats just my opinion.

Sponsor or host is a huge part of the decision made...

Remember Madison had only 16 fish the year prior. The PMTT will be back at Madison. In April your choices are VERY limited and Cave is one of the only places you can go....

Minnetonka is a absolute incredibile fishery and produced 38 fish over 40" in the 2001 trail... Chatauqua is on FIRE!

The PMTT is the top in Musky tournament fishing and realizes there are fishermen in areas other than the midwest. That is why they call it the "World Championship" the anglers and the trail travel across the United states and feature MANY different types of water. To fish and be sucessful on the trail means that you can adapt to whatever the trail and it's waters may bring. The "Top Gun" is a award that should receive more recognition. It is awfullt tough to produce everywhere you go. Fishing your local waters or the same type of water is much different. Some waters remain the same and some change. Again the PMTT will be back in Madison.

As a last note I personally am 0-13 in PMTT events. The PMTT has taught me more than I could have imagined and has shrunk my head down to it's intended size. I've met great people from 38 different states and made some life long friends as well.

Steve,

Now if it could shrink others parts of your body, We all would be millionaires!!! HAHAHA!!!

Venues have to change. Looks like I will make all 4 events this next year. 2 (hopefully 3) lakes will be new to me. Cave and Minnetonka (and Chautauqua) are lakes that I have hear many stories about and I think it will be great to fish them.

I am already geared up for next year.

Sharp:

Fishing with your wife again next year? I think that is super cool.

When (or should I say if) I get married, I hope my wife enjoys fishing as much as I do.

Steve your exactly right, The expierence I have gotten from fishing and talking to 99% of the other anglers has helped me put more and bigger fish in the boat, not always on tourney day but that will come in time I hope(4 for 20 on the trail 2 for 5 on the invites)Along with the knowledge I am currently storing I think my head is going to explode

Anyone who fished the Cass invitational should be proud. Like getting invited to play in the World Series. You are all world-class. m

It was great fishing with her in the PMTT this year. She has talked me into all sorts of things. Buying a new boat, Entering the PMTT 2 years ago for the Madison event, fishing 3 events this year and now (This was her idea.) I have a new partner for all events next year. Should be very interesting. Kristi (Special K) will still accompany me to some of the contests. But it came down to money and time off from work. This stuff gets expensive.

Now if I win the 117mill lottery tonight...............

Good point Hooks that I didn't really think about.

Rather than having a partner to split costs with, your family is stuck with the burden of all costs.

You bet it is expensive for just one, let alone paying for both anlgers.
