Hey guys if like to get another setup to add to my collection. Money isn't really an issue but is like to spend around $500-$600 on a new combo. What rod and reel do you think will be good for casting big bucktails and mag dawgs. I have a currado 6.2:1 that just dosent have the power and I have a musky mayhem that's 4.6:1 that dosent have enough pickup to burn blades. I was thinking if get a reel in a 5 ratio, as for rod I really don't know what length and action. Let me know what you guys think

My suggestion for a combo would be a Revo Nacl 60 and a St.Croix Premier XHF for around $500.

If you throw cowgirls:

>50% of the time: Tranx PG
<50% of the time: Tranx HG

Well I do use cowgirls more but with that low gear ratio on the pg will I have to crank really fast to be able to burn it? I see it pulls in 22in per crank

Revo 60 5.4:1 and St Croix LT Big Nasty. Not a burner but a good all around. Don't buy a Tranx unless you can try one, they are not for everyone...

I'm leaning towards the toro 60, I know the tranx has the power but will the low gear ratio have enough speed to burn blades?

The pg tranx is 32 or 33 inches per crank, plenty fst enough

so with the low gear ratio and high line retrieve it would make it easier to burn baits with low torque?

YES it is Fast and has Power and will burn Blades all day long !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The HG is alot faster but how many days do U need that kind of speed, only a few lakes in MN that I know of that has that kind of a speed bite.

it has a 4.6 gear i believe, but still does 30 IPT. the Tranx PG has the same IPT as the NACL high speed, but with a super low gear ratio that will make bringing in baits very easy. The high line retrieve and low gear give it a high amount of trq.

I believe that 5/0 Sports in Ontario now has a large selection of TI rods. James should have more details if you need.

Keep in mind it’s not just about the gear ratio, but it’s also about the inches per turn. A Tranx PG and Toro Winch have the same ratio at 4.6:1, but the Tranx brings in 30 IPT while the Winch brings in 22 IPT. Now that’s not to say you have to go with a Tranx, it’s not going to catch more fish for you, but it might lead to a more enjoyable experience while trying to catch that fish. Keep in mind that the Tranx is a big reel, VERY BIG; so you may need to adjust your grip to hold the fore grip, if you don’t already do so, if you find you can’t palm the Tranx comfortably.

The 400D is also a nice option, however the need for a screwdriver to be able to adjust the brakes can be a deal breaker for some. You aren’t going to be burning with this reel, as it’s 5.1:1 gear ratio is bringing in 3 IPT less than the Tranx, but it’s a more comfortable reel and $120 less, which you could then put towards a rod.

As far as rods go, you will find god options from all the brands, it just depends on how much you want to spend. Some people will only use St. Croix rods while others will only use Tackle Industries, and yet another group will only use Tooth Tamer or Custom X rods, and all will claim there is no need to look at any other manufacturer. My suggestion is to go to a store if possible and see how the rods feel in your hands. This can be hard to do for non St. Croix rods but is worth the time. Most store worth shopping at will let you put multiple reels on the rods to get a feel for them.

Well I picked up the tranx 500pg, and just ordered a 9' TI xxh rod. It was way over my budget but I'm sure it will do me well. As for line I got 80lb suffix 832, should this give me a good casting distance?

80lb should work just fine. I have the exact same setup (XH TI 9'). Other setup is a curado 300e w/ If she backlashes pretty bad at first, turn 4 of the brakes on. I can throw darn near everything from double 8's to MagDawgs. Write us your thoughts once you try that reel on a supermodel. You're gonna be amazed.

Nice combo. It should have been right in the middle of your budget - $400 on Tranx and $150 on TI.

I got the xxh ti for throwing 10s,13s, mag dawgs and medussa. Should the xxh fit the presentations nicely?

Rod.... anyone ever try tooth tamer. I have an expensive Shimano.... my husband tested a ton of rods and liked tooth tamer rods best and cheaper! Heck yeah.... quality and way lighter with the tooth tamer everything became easier on the arms, good feel, and as a matter of fact we like them sooooo much only rods we carry for sale in our shop. They are hard to find... a place in the cities sells them, resort on Vermilion, and we carry them in Chisholm on the way to Vermilion!

You might watch some of that big rubber sail in to the abyss with 80 lb. You may want to consider 100 lb if you plan to throw a lot of big rubber. You loose a little casting distance on the blades though.

^I've used 80lb pp for everything blades to monster medussas and have not had a problem. If you are a solid caster (few backlashes) you should be fine. Watch I'll sail a medussa after posting this...

The Nacl with the power crank pulls in double 10s much easier than the winch. It is also a much more comfortable reel than the tranx in my opinion. I personally believe the Nacl is the best reel you can buy.

Daiwa Lexa 400 (5.1:1) on a split grip Big Nasty. Plenty of line pick up to burn tails and more power than many other higher geared reels. And as for the rod, it's simply sweet.
