Location: Elroy, Wisconsin | Well Pards I been doing this craziness for fifty years. I have burned the following rules in my mind.....here's your chance to prove me wrong.......
!. Big, really big muskies never jump, they wallow, especially if the water is cold.
2. When you are trying to get a really nice person a first musky it is really difficult. Take some self important jerk out , bingo every time.
3. Certain lures catch fish, same brand, same color, one will and one won't
4. East winds are always a disaster, North winds are sometimes very productive, especially for big fish.
5. On tough days, Muskies always hit when you least expect it.
There are some to get started, whats your rule?

| I guess these "rules" are burned into "your" mind...I've been seriously chasing muskies for 15 years none of your 1 through 5 hold any water for me..
my only rule: you can't catch muskies sitting at home. |

Location: Eau Claire,WI | I Strongly disagree with #4. I catch more muskies on an east wind than any other direction.North wind is # 2,south,west or SW wind is tough. I fish a river where the main flow is from east to west,more current,more active fish. I also like sunny calm days over overcast/gloomy days.

My dads been taking my uncle out every time him and my aunt come up to visit, my uncle hasn't been able to boat one yet. Every time my dad catches one or two. My dad took his buddy out musky fishing, 47" his first time out.
I see some truth to your rules.

| New rule this year:
If the conditions looked good, fishing would suck. If it looked sucky, it'd be good. But once I caught on to that rule, I ruined it. Looked good out, so I thought it would be good, which meant it would suck, but because I realized that, then it would actually have to be good, so then it would suck. Results became highly invariable so the rule lost validity.

| OK, here are my rules:
1. The guy (gal) who keeps a quality bait, moving through quality water, and doing so in a quality fashion, and who KEEPS IT UP THE LONGEST, will gain the best results.
2. Fishing in the biggest new Ranger with a supercharged Verado and all the best St. Croix rods really doesn't make you a better angler than the next guy. It does feel really great however, you look terrific on the water....and girls in bikinis laying out in the sun on their docks all seem to be sitting up and thinking.....What a really cool guy!! He must be a really top pro musky guy. He's really cute too!
3. Guys who are not catching that many fish have time to think about stuff like that! |

RULE 2: Fish hard
RULE 3: ALWAYS figure 8
RULE 4: When in doubt, set the hook
RULE 5: Just go to have fun, try not to put to much emphasys on catching fish. Better to be on the water then darn near anything else! |

| Rule #1: The person with the least experience, sometimes even NONE, will usually catch the first fish of the day, the most fish of the day, and the biggest fish of the day.
Rule #2: A secret spot beats a secret lure, but a secret lake beats everything.
Rule #3: If you think you have the fish figured out? You don't.
Rule #4: Sharpen your hooks. Then sharpen them some more.
Rule #5: Check your drag. Then check it again.
Rule #6: If something doesn't feel right, set the hook!
Rule #7: The smallest musky in the lake will eat your lure on the next cast after the biggest musky in the lake follows it to the boat.
Rule #8: Dink Pike never miss lures and always stay hooked, especially on cold days when your fingers were just getting warm again.
Rule #9: If you give a musky an opportunity to throw your lure, it will.
Rule #10: Never make fun of what someone else is throwing or how they are working the lure, lest you find yourself an hour later throwing that same lure and trying to work it like them because they've caught three fish and you've caught none.

I like these ones. The other day I had just lost a good one after what felt like a good hookset and good pressure, etc. Few casts later, small pike slams the bucktail boatside. Couldn't shake it off, gave it slack and tugs, and that sucker was not coming off. Why can't muskies stay on like that?

| 1. Watch your hands muskies love fingers.
2. Always keep electrical tape in the boat.
3. Never through a pop can at the boat floor. When your mad at losing a fish. U will hit something very hard and your hand will hurt the rest of the day.
4. Always have confidence in what your in the lure you have on. Where you are fishing.

| People my wife and I work with ask what there is all to catching muskies and what they need to know about the rules. All I ever really say is as soon as you "have it all figured out", throw all of that away, and start over because the muskies WILL prove you wrong time and time again. |

| #2 rule is no lie. Can not tell you how many times I had my daughter on the water for her first muskie. One trip with my buddy Tanner Wildes and she has a 3 fish morning and she lost 2. Maybe I'm not that good. |
