Posts: 726 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Leighton should be curled up. That was a soft goal. He got 5 holed on an impossible angle because he was cheating. He never thought Kane would shoot so he was getting in position to watch behind the net and slide over. A goal like that is totally on the goalie, it's his job to stop a puck from that angle. Philly's defense had Kane outside the dots and almost to the corner. Had Leighton played the angle like he should have, no goal. Leighton stunk on Monday night too. That said, thanks Leighton! Congrats to the Hawks. Jono

I wouldn't go so far as to say it was a soft goal. Soft goals don't get buried under goal padding. Leighton had the angle cut off, what he didnt have was his stick on the ice where it should have been. Leighton's weakness is his 5 hole, and the Hawks knew that. The Flyers made the playoffs on a shootout goal, it could have just as easily been the Rangers in with the Flyers on the golf course. But they made it and had one hell of a run. Nothing to be a ashamed of for a team that wasn't supposed to make the playoffs.

Posts: 726 Location: Eau Claire, WI | Ya, Pointer it was a hard shot and he kept it on the ice. The best he was hoping for was a rebound in the slot. He struck gold. However, leighton was not out playing the angle, he was backed into the net. it was a fundamental breakdown. he got caught. check it. no way the puck should be in the net at that angle. Leighton should have been squared off better. Attachments ---------------- kane-leighton.jpg (40KB - 154 downloads)

Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | The shot had already been let go by that picture, that was not the angle the shot came from. Yes, he is backed into the net not expecting a shot. It was a poor goal, no doubt but not exactly a soft goal. Leighton certainly made a mistake, but it's not like Niemi was Martin Broduer back there. A lucky bounce or two the other way and Philly hoists the cup, but the better team won.

Posts: 726 Location: Eau Claire, WI | I think he was anticipating a pass or go behind the net. I know this much, when I was playing - my h.s. and college coaches would have been all over me allowing a goal from that angle. You are right the shot is already off in that frame. I can back up a few frames when he still has the puck on his stick. Leighton is still off angle. never ever get sideways on the puck. The philly d had the man in the slot, the backchecker is moving kane to the margin and there is help on the way. all leighton has to do is square off and play the puck. oh well. I'm glad the hawks won but I love the flyers too. Bernie Parent was a big influence on my playing style but nowdays its Tony Esposito that looks like the pioneer. We were always taught standup but the size of goalies now makes butterfly a pretty efficient style. Bottom line: good things happen when you put the puck on the net. Thanks for the fun banter! I like your hockey stuff. Jono

Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | It's tough to see the Cup won on a goal like that but a goal is a goal. Overall the series was outstanding. I believe Leighton is also a rookie that was brought up midway through the season from the AHL? If my memory is correct, he's probably got a pretty bright future in the league.

Posts: 32958 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | No one complained when Jordan rolled the ball around the rim once before it went through the hoop from 3 point range. No one cares if Tiger's put rolls around the top of the cup once before going in. If a high rising fastball gets lofted, and makes it over the right field wall, it's a home run even though solid contact wasn't made and the pitch was a ball. The end result of the shot was a puck in the net and the Stanley Cup in Chicago. I would have loved to have heard that shot and resulting goal called by Lloyd.

| Besides the victory, the class and clean tough play Chicago displayed in contrast to its counter part also stood out. A great season and true show of what makes a team and city winners...BR | |||

A great season and true show of what makes a team and city winners...BR I wouldn't go that far. The only "dirty" play done by Philly was done by Carcillo. The guy can hardly skate. He's a goon and has little hockey talent. But don't make it out to sound like Chicago helped the Flyers up when they knocked them down. Adam Burrish (ex-Badger) had plenty of dirty/cheap hits in both the Cup series as well as the playoff. People like to point at Pronger for being cheap, but he got called for several penalties. He gets away with whatever the refs will allow. He's done so for years and has proven this year (and also others) that he is actually not only a good leader but a hell of a hockey player.

| Hartnel is an example of dirty player, constant elbows and sticks up into the face. Pronger is just a habitual cross-checker and he tends to get away with it. I realize that is the only way they could hang with a much better team, but I was just mentioning that Chicago not lowering themselves to Philly's level really spoke to the classy nature of the team and really added to the victory for certain. Posts: 956 Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | Congratulations to the Stanley Cup Champions Chicago Blackhawks! Ive been a life long fan and have enjoyed the ride. Thanks to Toews and Burish who paraded the Cup around the parking lot this morning at Harry Carey's allowing me and all who were there to get their hands on the Cup and a select few who sipped sparkling amber colored beverages from it. What a night!!! These boys know how to party. I couldnt be happier for them and the entire satff of coaches trainers and management. You guys pick it apart all you want. The Hawks are the Stanley Cup Champions. Thats PERIOD. They didnt get there without DEDICATION raw talent and hard work. No Stanley Cup Champion doesnt raise the Cup without at least one lucky break , a favorable call and a missed call. The lion's share of the title rests on the effort put forth by the guys wearing the Indianhead sweater through the 82 regular season games and the 16 victories it takes to win the CUP in the post season. They EARNED it. The question now is; Once big Buf brings the cup home to Roseau, Mn., does he use it as a minnow bucket? Now I can change my match fishing team name from Ggggghhhhrrrr to Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! | ||

Posts: 956 Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | Hey Steve, Lloyds call would have been spectacular for sure. He's the voice of the Hawks I first knew as a kid watchin with Grandpa on WGN. Pointerpride102 - 6/10/2010 5:10 PM It's tough to see the Cup won on a goal like that but a goal is a goal. If my memory is correct, he's probably got a pretty bright future in the league. Tell that to all the Hawk fans accross the country. A cup winner ,is a cup winner, is a cup winner. It was a beautiful gaol. Kaner makes things happen by putting the puck on the net. Many others would have carried the puck around the back of the net and likely into traffic before attempting a wrap around or pass from behind the end line. A heads up play. Lieghton is far from a rookie. He was actually the Hawk's opening day goalie and had almost half the starts that year, somewhere around 2003??? I do see his future taking an upswing even after this loss.
