Hi.Here to ask for a little help and hopefully get a nice prize or two to you at the same time.

One of 6 documented spawning areas on Leech Lake is threatened by development. As I understand it the DNR has designated $200,000 to purchase the property but its going to take much more $$.MI clubs and others have pledged $1,000's but much more is needed.

A group of us have set up a raffle to help raise $$ for this project. Thanks to George Wahl a few booths will be selling these raffle tickets at the Mn Muskie EXPO and we also have online ordering for those who can't be there.

Prizes will continue to accumulate till near the end of the March when the drawing will take place.(need not be present to win.)

The tickets are $5.00 each

A little more information from the DNR fisheries:

FIVE MILE POINT, LEECH LAKE
PROPOSED AQUATIC MANAGEMENT AREA (AMA) ACQUISITION
Harlan Fierstine
DNR Area Fisheries Supervisor
07316 State 371 NW
Walker, MN 56484
218/547-1683
[email protected]
The proposed Five Mile Point AMA consists of 1200 feet of shoreline and about 30 acres on Leech Lake east of Five Mile Point. Located offshore of the property is 1 of 6 documented muskellunge spawning areas on Leech Lake. The spawning area was located by Bob Strand (retired DNR Fisheries Research Biologist) during the radio telemetry work he conducted with muskellunge during the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s. The spawning area is in water depths ranging from about 3 to 6 feet. The bottom substrate is primarily marl (very soft) on which grows Chara (muskgrass). Chara is the perfect substrate for the successful development of muskellunge eggs. All documented muskellunge spawning areas on Leech Lake have the combination of marl and Chara.
During January, 2002 this office received an Army Corps permit application for a 36 slip boat harbor to be dredged in a riparian wetland. The harbor would serve future development on the 30 acres. Due to likely damage caused by concentrated boat traffic to the muskellunge spawning area located directly offshore, the DNR recommended denial of the permit application. There is no guarantee that the permit will be denied. Concentrated boat traffic would likely destroy much of Chara thus eliminating the substrate needed for the successful development of muskellunge eggs.
Because of the muskellunge spawning area the DNR Division of Fisheries has allocated $200,000 of LCMR funds to purchase the property to be managed as an AMA. Such a designation would protect the muskellunge spawning area for the future. The value of the property is greater than the amount of money the DNR has available. Presently several chapters of Muskie Inc, the Wabedo-Little Boy-Inguadona-Rice-Cooper Lakes Assoc., and Leech Lake Watershed Foundation have committed funds to help purchase the proposed AMA. All these dollar commitments will be matched by Reinvest In Minnesota (RIM) funds. More funds are needed for the purchase.
The property owner is interested in seeing the property purchased and managed as an AMA. Thus he is willing to hold off for a short unspecified time on any development plans to allow some time for funds to be raised for the purchase. He has enjoyed the natural resources of the Leech Lake area for years. Like anyone with an investment he does want to see a return for himself and his children.
The proposed Five Mile Point AMA is important for the future of the high quality muskellunge fishery of Leech Lake.

Impressive!! What a list of prizes and what a great cause! Remember, we are stewards of the resource. It's up to us to work together to protect, and improve our fishing. Like anything else in life, we get out what we put in. If we want continued great Muskie fishing in Mn. then we need to step up and help out. I'll be getting my tickets at the Expo!

Great job and Thanks to all who have put together this fund raising drive!

Hi.I'm 99.9% certain the drawing date will be held Tuesday night,March 18th at the St.Cloud,Mn Muskies Inc meeting in Waite Park,Mn.All the prizes should be here by then.I say 99.9 instead of 100% because all the chapter board members have not been contacted yet.
We want the drawing to be public and it will be.A breakdown of the prizes will be done at the EXPO.A list of this breakdown will be compiled there. Then at the drawing we simply will go down the list and draw tickets til all winners have been determined. This info will be published the next day.
Thorne Bros has graciously agreed to serve as a 'pick up 'point so winners from Mn and western Wisconsin can pick theirs up there.we will be shipping the rest asap but winners are asked to consider picking up shipping costs.Asked, not required.
Buy tickets and good luck!

See you Saturday!

Hi.Well the Expo starts tomorrow so I look forward to meeting many of you over the next few days.Stop by our booth and say hi whether you buy tickets or not.Hope and suspect you will when you see many of the wonderful prizes. To those that can't make it I hope you'll buy some tickets anyway.
This has been a lot of work for a group of us and its far from over yet but it sure has been rewarding as well.Met and heard from a lot of great people to date.Let me give you the latest example.Came home a few minutes ago and had about 4 boxes I suspected were prizes.
Opened the first one and inside were two of the prettiest Spinnerbaits I have EVER seen.Obviously hand tied-and well tied.There also was a letter inside.Let me quote parts of it;
"Dear Dick,
I learned of the effort underway to save a valuable spawning site for Leech Lake muskies.I've seen the loss of spawning habitat to development on many of the waters we fish, including the St.Lawrence River and Georgian Bay.My young sons have fished with me since they could walk and I've tried to impress upon them the importance of preserving habitat and we'd like to try and help your efforts."
..(he goes on to describe the success with and the colors of the baits sent and other neat things and then ends....
"In addition we also purchased 5 raffle tickets over the internet.I know its not much Dick but I hope it helps.Catch and release won't go far if they have no where to spawn.Best of luck and if we make it to the Musky Odyssey in Ontario in April we'll introduce ourselves.
Sincerely,
Wayne Beilman"
Wayne it is 'MUCH'.Thanks very much.It means a great deal to all of us here and by all means I hope to meet you at the Odyssey or somewhere down the road.Hi and thanks to your sons as well.
Folks none of us here could say it better than Wayne.Wayne who most likely will never fish on Leech, but who obviously 'gets it'.
Please help by buying some tickets.
Thanks.

Are you still selling raffle tickets? The PayPal link doesn't work (either from here, MHM, or the Muskies 101 web sites. At least for me, getting tickets with my credit card has not been a panacea. Now I wish I had saved more of my cash at the Blaine expo; I could have used it to buy tickets there.

Oops. Previous post was empty. Anyway, even the latest link doesn't work. I get into the PayPal Muskies Inc. screen, but it says "Error Detected: You have entered non-US-ASCII characters such as £ and é. Non-US characters are not currently supported. Please use alternatives like GBP and e, then try again."

From there I can log into PayPal, but there is no Leech Lake raffle that I can find within PayPal. Am I missing something?

Well, I got into Pay Pal. The old links have a character at the very end of the link that Pay Pal doesn't like.

This one should work: https://www.paypal.com/xclick/business=leechraffle%40hotmail.com&und...

I'd like to help out by donating a full day of musky fishing courtesy of my Big Goomba Guide Service on the Fox Chain of Lakes here in Illnois.  Let me know what I need to do.  Glad to assist in such a worthwhile cause.

Assuming the drawing did take place last night, is there a final tally of $$$ raised? Also, is there going to be a list of winners available?

Hope the effort pays off. I was pleased to spend my money on the raffle. Thanks to all the donors, sponsors, and individuals who helped put this together!!
