Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Word Record Muskie?

Just wondering what everyone thoughts are on catching a word record. Do you keep it? My livewell is only 48" long and it would not fit in there. I supose you could tye a roop to its jaw and slowly pull the fish to a cirtified scale. The only problem with that is what if you are 20 miles away? You could cary a scale that goes to 100 pounds in your boat and take pictures and length and girth measurements but does that give you the official record?

What is everyone else's thoughts on this?

Cory

Thanks for asking, I just plan to club it and then take it to a resort that has a certified scale, simple.[;)]

I would put it back after having measured it and taken pictures of it. No doubt about that.

I have released every fish I have caught since 1988, but for a fish that size I have only two words. Tire iron. Thump that thing over the head and to a certified scale I go. [:p] [] [:knockout:]

Tire Iron, LOL!!!!! But who carries a tire iron in there boat. Are you thinking that you might have to change a tire, LOL. Just kidding. I release all my fish to, but with a fish like that, big risk in many ways.

I would take it the closest certified scales for my new world record. However, if I were in Kentucky, I would lie and say I caught it somewhere else!!! Tire irons also work on drivers of wave runners! []

cut it in half so it fits in the live well or get a bigger boat![;)]

Come on guys! Sorry but the whole tire iron thing is the worst excuse I have ever heard in my life!!! You mean to tell me if you caught the WW you would hit it over the head with a tire iron and kill it?! Everyone knows the fire extinguisher is the most readily available thing in the boat. THUD. [] Plus carrying a tire iron in your boat would jinx your chances! HAHA.

In all honesty I would try my best to keep it alive, but a fish that big would be close to dead from the fight already. I release all my fish, but that one would stay.

I'm still laughing at Jonfloaters answer! Were it me, I actually don't know...would hate to think I bonked one, had a stroke, puked + passed out only to find out it 30 lbs short of the record....can't you just see it now...carrying 1/2 a fish under each arm to have it certified!!![:sun:]

Now that you guys got me thinking, I'm going to have to design a custom cherry picker for my boat in order to hoist her up and plunk her into the 500 gal. livewell that'll sink me long before I get on the water!

Do any of you guys remember the guy who supposedly caught what would have been the world record largemouth out of Okachobee, weighed it and then let her go?

If you don't drag the beast to shore for certification, it'll be just another big fish story! [] I agree no point in carrying a club/tire iron- use what's available. [:0] I'm going to use the front pedestal so I can get in a two handed swing on the beast. Pop the seat off- "whack, whack"!![:knockout:] []

Woody: yep, I saw the article and picture. I believe it was in Outdoor life. He tried his best to find certified scales prior to releasing it alive. Sure it wasn't in Kentucky? I imagine if it were for real (sure looked real) that the fish if kept would have earned him a lot of money.

Wouldn't you just want to put it on the bottom of the boat and let it slowly die. I believe clubbing will make it bleed severely, making it lose some weight.

I like the pedastal idea. As for the idea of letting the fish slowly die, come on now. You shouldn't even be allowed on the water with that kind of thought. I'm sorry but some people just don't have any common sense.

Common sence when your talking about a worlds record? Think of yourself in this situation. Who would care, other than Bob Barker, if this fish suffers for a few minutes? Wrap that fish in wet clothes, throw it in the bottem of the boat, and sit on it. Look at what esox14 writes after a post and believe! Were talking about 1 fish in ten lifetimes.[;)]

I'm in the process now of developing a new device called the "HEAD SLEEVE"...this product is made of chloroform impregnated rayon + has a drawstring sewn in the bottom of the sleeve; once the record is caught, just slip the head sleeve over the upper end of the fish + draw the string tight...tests on carp, postmasters + house cats have shown the Head Sleeve to work w/in 5.7 seconds, making this product the most humane dispatch method on the market today! Order now + receive a colorful 70" 'WORLD RECORD" satin lined carrying case, the perfect transport bag for that once in a life time moment...approach the dock w/ confidence + style knowing that your day has come. Call 1-800-SPO-NGEB for prompt service; and if you call w/in 1/2 hour, you'll receive an instructional video on how to handle not only the fish but also the media! Call NOW.......[:0]

Guarantee you wouldn't want a W/R sized musky flopping around in your boat regardless of what you TRIED to wrap it in. And you'd probably only sit on it a for a matter of seconds before your SWIM! Ever wonder why Louie and clan included guns in their musky tackle? The rope through the jaw might work, but I'd sure hate to be the guy trying to get the rope through that mouth of teeth, I kind of think a normal mouth spreader might be just a tad weak for the purpose! You could try leaving it in the net and if you were successful in getting it certified, Frabill or Beckman would more than likely replace your trashed net, just for adverising purposes. But I'm afraid you'd have to dispatch it with a blow to the head with a stout blunt instrument of some sort.

Everyone Please STOP!!! I'm going to kill myself laughing. My stomach is hurting already!

I never thought I would get such a laugh from what I thought was a seriouse question. Now that I think about it, I too would keep it. I would be sawing to my self " Wait untill the taxidermist see's what I brought him"!!!
I would think a good wack with my paddle should do the trick. Thanks for the laughs!

I guess if you had too....tie the anchor rope thru the upper jaw and drag the beast back, heck you might even gain some water wieght that way. LOL[]

All I know is this will never happen to me, so its really not something I would even have to consider, let alone do.[;)]

The fact is....the fish would have to be 70"x29" to even consider it.

Someone said, the fish of 10 lifetimes.....I say the fish of 1,000,000 lifetimes.[;)]

Jason,

I was figuring that the fish would be around the 65" mark with a girth of 30, 31. I have heard of fish around the 30 to 33 inch mark so that is not imposible. A fish like that would have to be over 70 lbs

What are your thoughts and what were the measurements of the current World record.

Cory

It's not easy to figure out what dimensions are needed for a record. Louis Spray's 69 lb 11 oz fish was 62.5 x 31.25 inches. Robert Malo's 70 pounder was 55 x 32 inches. Cal Johnson's 67-8 fish was 60.25 x 33.5 inches. If you use the LxGxG/800 formula, then Spray's fish would have been predicted at 76.3 pounds instead of 69.7, Malo's would have been 70.4 instead of 70 (not bad), and Johnson's would have been 84.5 instead of 67.5 pounds. Some people claim that this proves that the Spray and Johnson fish were frauds, but I think that it shows that the weight of a fish depends on more than just its length and girth. It would be a shame to conk a big fish based on length and girth measurements and then find out you are 5-10 pounds below the record, if your intent is to only keep a record?

the formulas I think dont work, but if you guys truly want a record you'd better come down my way in Canada, Georgian Bay area will have the next record out of it or maybe the Ottawa river, where do you guys think???, but look at where the last BIG fish came from right in my backyard!

I have to agree with Jason Smith on this one, It will never happen to me so I try not to think about it. But if for some reason I catch what might be the new world record, I can garauntee, that my 4 foot paddle will be 2 smaller ones by the time Im done. Other than that let her swim away.

I'm 70 inches long with a 40" girth. If I were a Musky, I wonder how much I would weigh?

I think LOTW's has a really good chance at a World record. An article I read in IN-fiserman Mag talked about a fish seen there buy a credible person that might have gone 80 LBS. I will be out there every weekend in the fall and will be a hopeing.

No matter what you do short of weighing the fishon a certified scale in the presence of wittnesses it's not a record.

If a possiable world record comes into my boat the billy club will be swinging. Otherwise it's just one of those could of would of should have been's.

If I caught one, I would return it to the water but it would be seeing blue dots for awhile!

That would be a thrill of a lifetime, to me returning the fish gives the beast the respect I think it deserves but to each his/her own.[:)]
