I will be changing out a bunch of split rings and hooks in the next few weeks, going to Bucher #5 and #7's. My "little" pliers make it more work than it's worth. I would appreciate some help on a good pair and where I might get 'em.
Thanks for your time.

I just picked up a pair of Shimano fishing pliers that are well made and work for more than just split rings.

My pair of Rapala pliers snapped on me after two days, so I would stay away from them.

I prefer my older Rapala (without the spring between the handles) and have had no problems, but the rest of the crew around here votes for the Xuron. I know Stamina carries it.

Bought mine at Wal-Mart three years ago, they still work perfect. I have installed and removed well over 4,000 hooks and another 4000 rings with them. I think I paid 8 dollars for them.

I have to go with Jed on this one. I use the same ones. I have some I paid 20 dollars for that don’t compare to the 8 dollar ones.

At the Chicago show Norm Wild had a pair he was showing us he had just bought. They seemed to work really slick. Black metal with a blue rubber handle. The "bill" on them looked really good and they looked like they were built pretty sturdy. But, I have no idea where he bought them.

That being said, I've still got my Shimano's and working good after about 4 years.

Scott, I believe the ones that Norm has are the Xuron brand. I have the same pair that I've had for @ 6 years. I'm not sure which ones Jed has, but they sound like they work well too.

Scott, won't be necessarily the cheapest (by U.S. prices), but try http://www.luremaking.com

I use Xuron for all of my split ring and hook removals. We carry them here in our shop (Crash's Landing). They usually run around $16.00-$18.00.

"My pair of Rapala pliers snapped on me after two days, so I would stay away from them."

Same here. They cannot be used to cut anything but wire. They will not cut hooks without snapping. I do like the split ring feature on them though. The tines on the pliers are thin enough that you can use them on both large and small split rings.

Jed, you ever considered foiling the handles on those?

Lol.....no haven't modified the handles in anyway other than natural wear and tear. One thing I will add is that I have never used the pliers as cutters. Still tho, I have done thousands of split rings with them and they still work like the day I got them...no slop at all. They will probably die tonight now that I have been braggin em up!!

The ones Todd put up are the best I've used (better than Xuron's design, in my opinion).

My rapalas busted the first time I used them. The kind I put up for view will work on all size split rings no problem.
