Hey Guys,

I've stayed at a lot of resorts over the years on LOTW, but have never been to Big Narrows resort. It's got a great location. I'm not real excited about having to get the full American plan because it doesn't look like they have housekeeping options.

Anyways, I thought I had heard a few years ago the place was sold (or was for sale) was getting pretty run down.

Has anyone been there recently and how is it? I don't need anything fancy, just a place to lay my head and preferably no mice (for the girlfriend)!

Thanks
IAJustin

I've been up there the past 2 years with a few buddies. Definitely not what it was operationally when we first went 15 year ago, but it works fine for guys like us who are pretty much self-sufficient. And the location is nice.

The cabins are are pretty much middle-of-the-road for a camp. Gas and ice always available at the dock, but don't expect high-end service. Also know that you have to get your license in advance (they don't sell them) and they don't have a liquor license. Neither of these bother us, but all depends on what you want in a camp.

No mice, but definitely have a chipmunk that begs for peanuts ....

You can definitely get a housekeeping package. Just email the website email and you should hear from them within a day or two. But housekeeping has tended to be garbage and clean towels. That's about it.

I've been there the last 3 years as a buddy of mine knows the owner well. In my opinion, nice place and nice people. Its not a 5-star resort. Its a resort with cabins on LOTW; comfortable and quiet. I really enjoy it. Great location. If you want to party, motor north to Wiley point.

I highly recommend Wylie Point lodge just east of Big Narrows Lodge. Excellent facilities, great food, cabins are air conditioned and all the amenities you might want! It is an extension of Totem and Yellow Bird Lodges in Sioux Narrows. They also have an outpost cabin. You can get your licenses at Totem lodge when you check in. The docking facilities are great and they usually have a mechanic on duty in case you have an equipment problem. Two friend lost lower units and were able to get back on the water the same week.

From a fishing standpoint you easily access the Big Narrows area (5 to 10 minutes) and lots of other areas east of the Big Narrows area.

Have you ever fished a shield lake before? There are uncharted rocks on all of them !! LOTW is no exception

Yes darrin I have fished shield lakes since 1983. I know lake of the woods very well and can recall one rock outside of the blue caution areas that is not on the paper map. That rock is on sabaskong. I have fished all over the wiley point area past sunset channel to the upper portions of whitefish. And from wiley down through the angle,
along the bottom of alnue peninsula to nestor falls. From wiley up to bigstone in the northeast. And from wiley to shoal lake. That is why I am asking if there is an is an uncharted rock around wiley as I don't want to hit it

North of the solid line east west main channel along the bottom of sabaskong. Just after the dotted channel meats the solid red line, but before you get to the green buoy going into big marsh narrows. I don't have my map in front of me, but I think that description is correct. Most resorts know about it and will mark it for you. Quite easy to hit, but I think it is on some chips now. Let me know if you need more info and I will pm you a picture of the map when I get a chance.

High water and my friend forgot that there was a rock there which is normally visible. Second guy took a short cut between the wrong 2 islands.

That makes sense. High water can really goof up your perspective
I went up on a rock in a channel at closed throttle that I had went past at least 50 times over the years because the high water covered it by six inches. It was normally a foot above the water line

Thanks for posting the picture. That is the one I was speaking of, the 2 red icons and 2 green icons. No warning on the paper map and it appears no warning on that chip. Actually a decent size reef,

I have had that waypointed for years, nasty sharp rock reef and quite big...never understood how that missed the cartographers notice.

My new lake insight chip does show that reef, first time I've seen it. Not on Navionics.

It's marked on the Navionics app I have on my phone. Will have to look to see if it's marked on the Premium North chip I have in the boat. The picture posted by musky1969 looks like it's a screenshot of the app on the phone. The picture posted by Lake of the Woods looks to be the actual paper map that it's not marked on.

I am referring to the one further south. The one a little north doesn't look like it's marked as a hazard on the app. Just has a fish saying it's a good spot. Not a good spot if it's an unmarked reef!

Will be interesting to see if my Navionics chip in the boat is consistent with the app on my phone.

This was the first year I ever fished Sabaskong in 17 years on LOTW. I was running about that area and I'm happy I never contacted these unmarked motor busters!

As an FYI for those interested, the last I heard is that Big Narrows Resort is closed for the remainder of the year. I was up there this season and the trend of comments in here hold pretty true to the direction the resort is going based on the times I've been there, unfortunately. This year there was limited electricity as only the backup generator was available, limited staff which lead to sub par meals/service compared to previous years, and a lack of accommodations (read: DIY housekeeping). The place needs some TLC to bring it back to life and hopefully that happens so the 2017 season up there is enjoyable, since it's such a beautiful area on LOTW.

So are you sure on the northern red X on your map? I've had the south one waypointed for almost 10 years, but never heard the other one was there, and now I'm feeling pretty lucky, see my trails from last week....

typically that unmarked reef north of the green buoy has some kind of marker on it...at least the last 5 years or so...last week it had a gray oil bottle on it...not great to pickup even when looking for it.

You were outside it. But not by a lot.
If I had a dime for every unmarked rock I've piled up on top of while trolling...

The current/newest map versions are very good and getting better with each version. The Humminbird Lakemaster one is outstanding except in the far north towards Kenora, and the Lowrance Insight map is right up there with it.

The map on my screenshot is the latest version of Lake Insight, doesn't show it. Is the rock basically on top of the 12ft hump shown on the chip and the paper map?

Glaucus, does your Lakemaster keep working as you go north and east of the Rope Islands area of the Angle, and northern portions of the Narrows? We have the most current version of Woods/Rainy chip and ours does not show that stuff. And in fact there are areas that my older v3 of Woods/Rainy shows better than the latest version, but there are some that are vice versa. Any insight on this? No pun intended!
