Hey all, here’s the first of my 2016 builds. They are some double flaptails in frog, loon, and reverse nemo. Also a “naked” Molly Diver AL - finished with just some metal flake over natural resin color and epoxy finish. I have more in the works so I’ll share them here too. Very nice. Ever try adding creeper wings to one of those flap tails?

Thanks guys. I did build a flapper/creeper out of that body that way, but with the reg size flaptails it was too much weight and drag. If I downsize them to a #3 colorado it works, but at that point a topper prop on the back of the creeper is about the same thing. It looked cool though.

Hey all, just finished these up, rainbow trout and first try at Fathead minnow. I’m liking the way the fathead turned out. Attachments ---------------- ![]() ![]()

Awesome looking lures, like the paint and detail in the carving/shaping. MNmusky, I don't mean to hijack this thread, but my friend Ryan Jinkerson has been making flap tail creepers for me for about 10 years. If you'd like to see one, drop me an email.

Posts: 134 | Mrichardson- I saw a thread of yours from a while back and you had originally started making your cranks w/lexan and wire tried the aluminum lip as an alternative style. I am curious if the weight of lip and different attachment system affected the action of your bait? And if it did how so? Better or worse, in your opinion?

Neat question, first off, in my humble opinion, I’ll say clevis pins are not magic pins. The fundamentals of bait building are still the most determining factors in affecting a lure’s action. My bait was designed with a certain wobble and wander in mind and it does so with the lexan lip. But, since switching to the aluminum lip the wobble is notably more and the wander is about the same. I’ll attribute most of that change due to weight placement. With the aluminum lip hanging off the front I needed to move the internal weights further back to re-balance the lure. That’s a fundamental there, the more spread out the weight the more action. The clevis pin does have a unique trait though in that it offsets the pull point of the line-tie from the surface of the lip. As a side note, when we were developing the TripleD my partner Jason Long’s dad came up with what was known as the “plumb line” theory. What we would do is hang a lure vertically from the line tie and take note of where the plum line went through the body and the relation of the lip angle to that. We would use that as a reference point when comparing lure versions. So back to this lure, when I was determining the locations in the lip to drill the clevis pin holes I noticed that the locations I liked were further forward then I thought they would be. When I did the plum line check to compare the lexan lip to the AL lip found that they were the same. But, even though they had the same plum line, the clevis pin line tie was a little more forward and offset from the lip. This is something that I think does affect the lure. Here’s what I noticed, when watching the lure I was thinking, wow, why didn’t that lure roll over or blow out. It should have with how wild it was. I theorize that the line tie being offset from the surface and the forward placement of it gives leverage that allows for a wild lure to be “saved” to run somewhat true. Thanks and proppers to Duff and Joe for coming up with it.

Just finished up these toppers, props are hand cut from naval brass. I sized them as big as possible and still fit in my Lakewood box. Reverse Nemo pattern and real gold, silver, and copper leaf under black lace. One is for me and one for my son. Also a couple of perch Attachments ---------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

He’s not allowed to fish with anything but with baits I build him! Lol My one and only prostaff. He mostly throws blades and last year he had a hat trick musky day on nickel/copper double fluted Indiana blades. So of course he’s asking me to fill his box with those for this year. We will be making those soon, he ties the marabou for his. Edited by MRichardson 2/23/2016 12:42 PM

Posts: 134 | MRIchardson, Thank you for replying to my post. I like the plumb line idea. I had built a one off prototype, my first build ever, at the start of last season and had some success with it... like 2 fish in 2 hours of running it one of which was my wifes personal best. I guess I got lucky with testing it at the right time. Long story short I snagged that bait in a rock pile the next day and I was unable to recover it. I have been trying to recreate that bait from a few pictures I had of it. Since then I have made several builds which I have also had some success with but each bait is slightly different. I have been trying figure a way to measure the consistency between builds. When I started looking at baits that have been successful (fish catchers), the lip shape, body shape, and what I called the "pull point" were the elements of design I was looking to meld together. And so it started with some cedar and aluminum. My baits are screw eyes, not through wire, and I have since added a rattle system. I don't have a name for them yet and I will try to get a few pictures loaded up... Thanks for sharing.
