Location: Iowa | Just wondering what brand everyone uses, and what they think of them. I need to add a few this winter, and don't want to put any on that I'm going to lose a rod with. Also when mounting them to fiberglass, do you just pre-drill the holes and screw right into the fiberglass?? I'm probably going to mount 2 on the rails and then a few more mounts in the fiberglass around the boat to cover any situation.

Location: Racine, Wi | You'll probably get 2 types of replies. The Down Easters and the Folbes. I personally use the Down Easters on my rails and they are bullet proof. Can't complain at all. However I know a lot of guys have gone to the Folbes and I haven't heard a bad thing about those either. So I would go with either of these personally.
As far as mounting to fiberglass, I can't help ya there unless you want your boat to sink.  Hopefully someone else will pipe in for that. |

Location: Musky Tackle Online, MN | Down Easters and Folbes are definitely the most popular among musky guys, as Joel mentioned. I don't think you would be disappointed with either of them. I got a deal I couldn't pass up on some RAM mount rod holders that I put on my boat and I've been very happy with them as well.

| I just put folbes on my boat and I am very pleased so far. They are easy on my rod handles and they are very easy to use. I feel they are up to the abuse as well - though they do flex on hookups and snags. |

| I have both the DownEasters and the Folbe's on my boat. I use the Folbe's for sucker fishing and the DownEasters for trolling. If you think the Folbe's will work for trolling then put a 14 inch Jake and a board in one and see what happens. I like the fact that they are easy to use but don't like the way they flex when pulling big baits. Go with the DownEasters. |

Location: Iowa | I've got a couple Down-East from my prior boat. They are great rod holders, but I want more mounting options. Are the different mounts they have quick and easy to remove the actual holder from and change to a different mount on the boat? I want to be able to take the holder off the rail mount, easily, when I put a cover on the boat so I don't have to worry about it tearing through. I just haven't seen a lot of options for these, maybe I'm not looking in the right place. |

Location: Racine, Wi | Go with some sort of track system. They allow for flexibility as far as where you are putting your holders, and they are easy to remove. Add to that they only stick up an inch or two from the boat, it makes them very user friendly. |

Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | I've run the Folbe rail mount holders on my boat for the last two seasons. Trolled double ten bucktails at over 5 mph and had no problem. I've run 13" Believers, 14" Jakes, deep diving 10" Slammers and they handle them just fine. |

| Why would you run a rod holder that flexes and might not break? Run a Down Easter that WON'T break. |

Location: SE, WI. | I beg to differ with downeast breaking. I had one break trolling canada one year. Was trolling...then got snagged in rocks, my anti reverse failed, instant birdsnest. Thought rod would break first, but the darn down east shattered before rod. Yes, the aluminum base broke in half. I returned it to down east and never heard from them again...they lost my business and my trust in their product.
I currently use ram rod holders. Yes , they flex, but that is a good thing. Also never lost a rod on one. I have boated estimated 1,400 Musky with them, and if you have an issue, the company replaces...no questions asked. Lifetime warranty on Rams!!!

Location: Iowa | I looked at the rams mounts too, but wasn't sure if they would hold up. Thanks for the testimonial. The only thing I don't like about the 2 down-east I have used is the trigger on some of my muskie rods don't fit in them right and they have gouged them up some. I don't troll a LOT, but when I do it's never been anything over 14" cranks, and very seldom a planer board. Thanks again for all the info guys. I'm pretty sure it will be Folbe or Ram, just have to look at them both in person and decide. |

Location: Warroad, Mn | I'm with JD, In the fall trolling the rocks on the LOTWs we often snag. This results in a very sudden stress on your rod holders. I know several folks who have broken down-easters while trolling on the LOTWs.
I use Rams and have for around 15 years, and never have a failure of any kind. So does Jack Burns. We use them for good reason. They work!

Location: lansing, il | I have the Folbes, mounted to thr Traxstech system and really like em alot. i still have a couple down-easters that i use as well. I have broken a down east a few years ago. they are good but i wouldnt call them bulletproof. weve gotten a few nice fish on the folbes this fall and i am very satisfied with the way they hold up. They work good for me. |
