Posts: 208 Location: Northern Wisc. | What is everyone using for throwing Double cowgirls and DC-10? I would imagine the 7000 reel from garcia would be the best, but just wondering....

Yeah thats why your arms fell off, onto the dock, and into the water on the the last day of the trip I have used the 7000 Abu for dc bucktails and they are definitely a wise choice, but I'm sure they fall apart after a years use like the other Abu reels do

Posts: 670 Location: Otsego, MN | I've used the same 7000 for 3 years and thrown a lot of DBL Cowgirls and the reel has held up great. Like all reels take care of them and give them some lube and they will last.

Why didn't I think of that! I think the large power handles of the Abu 7000s, Calc 400Bs, and Lunas are key to less fatigue, along with lower gear ratios.

Posts: 785 | 7000's Falling apart? That's funny. I've got one(red) that I bought back in the mid eighties that still performs without a glitch. Just spooled it up ready for the fall. I'll take old fashioned Swedish technology over the orient any day. And by the way, I think I paid 69 bucks for that reel back then. I believe I got my money's worth out of it, don't you? Kdawg

Posts: 2089 | Anybody got a pawl and worm gear for an older 7000? She blew last week so it's back to the Luna. Used the Luna for 3 seasons and not a glitch. Steve

| I have a quick question, do the 7000 series abu's have the same push button on the side as the 6500's, or does it have a lever like a trolling reel? I was specifically wondering about the C3, thanks and good fishing. | |||

| Push button. I say 7000 also for the big blades...like night and day over my Lunas for that application. | |||

I was specifically wondering about the C3, thanks and good fishing. Up until recently they were push button. The new 7000i series out this year has a lever more like a trolling reel. It is just as easy, if not easier, to use as the push button The Luna is a great reel, but it is definitely night and day between that and a 7000 when tossing big blades. | having tried just about every reel listed and made...the Penn 975 still is the best imo... i have one with probably 1000's of hours...yes, 1000's and it is rock solid for big bucktails... smooth drag, big power handle, perfect gear ratio....

Posts: 1270 | uberola, I disagree! I have always been a big 7000 fan and the new ones are the best ones yet. The new ones have instant anti reverse and a the lever is much nicer IMHO than the push button. They also have better drags than the earlier ones. Currentlly I am playing with the new 7000i's in the line counter and synchro drag models and they blow any reel that I have used away for trolling, the Synchro also works great as a casting reel.

Posts: 374 Location: Bemidji | I am not impresssed with the new Abu 7000i's for throwing the double-ten baits. All three that I bought in June were trashed in three weeks. The weight is also another issue. I am sticking to my 400 TE's with the saltwater power handles.

| So far, so good, with my new 7000i. The lever, instead of the push button, takes a little getting used to. Once I got that dialed in I was good to go. | |||

Posts: 358 Location: London, England | 7000 and 7000i reels come with two different ratios - 4:1 and 5.3:1. The 4:1 reels have amazing cranking power and should last a long time with any bait, the 5.3:1 reels have a very fast rate of line recovery , but probably wouldn't last as long with high resistance baits. Great for burning small bladed bucktails or spinnerbaits or picking up the slack on jerkbaits though. Like with all things, picking the right equipment for the job is important. There's no point complaining about your reel going down if you've asked it to do something it's not suited to.

Posts: 22 Location: Twin Cities | My 7000s (and my 6500s) are holding up well after nearly a decade on the water. Just have to take care of them. Abu customer service has been very good whenever I needed a part. The 6500 pre instant anti-reverse tended to wear the reverse prawl, but that is an easy part to replace and inspect. If you gut your reels at least once a year you notice what parts may need a replacement. I would expect any reel to wear if you put it to good use. You can't skip the maintence and expect it to keep going, regardless of make.
