Location: Brookfield, WI | Thanks everybody for the responses on my inner layer thread. Yesterday and today I aquired the clothing I think will be sufficient to keep warm under most conditions. If conditions require gear above and beyond what I have purchased, I think the term to describe such a day on the water would be survival, and not fishing.
Light Polypro underwear.
Heavy polypro underwear.
Crew neck fleece.
Zip up to turtleneck style fleece.
Fleece vest.
Fleece pants.
Wool sweater.
Light and heavy poly liner socks.
Wool socks.
Neoprene gloves.
Fleece lined Neoprene Glacier Gloves (thanks Lambeau for that one, they look sweet).
Light weight insulated water proof boots.
Sorel boots (I had these, they weigh a ton but I'm bringing them).
Fleece face mask with long neck.
Fleece hat.
Fleece neck gator (different than a dickie, weird).
Fleece muff style hand warmer with belt and hot packs for inside. (Thanks Beaver for this idea)
Gander H2O Tech GoreTex Parka
Cabelas GoreTex Bibs (Hooray for the Bargain Cave).
I have some Thermalpacks that strap around your body from when my back was bothering me. I'm bringing them. (Thanks to Beaver again).
My natural layers of Walrus type blubber.
If I forgot anything, anyone feel free to chime in. I'm thinking this gets it done. I'm glad the Skyview fees are reasonable. WOW.

one thing to remember is that you'll get to use all of this over and over again. (tell that to your wallet right now though huh?) it'll also mean you're much more likely to get outside for fishing, but also for all kinds of other winter activities: skiing, hiking, snow-ball fights, whatever...

Location: Brookfield, WI | That's the problem when you're 45 and take up a sport that requires a lot of STUFF. You have nothing and need it all right away. You can't aquire gear over time.
I seriously believe the quality and amount of stuff I bought this year will allow me to fish for the next five years without buying more than a couple baits when I feel like it.
Oh yeah, and a boat. That's going to have to wait until I prove to the little lady that I'm going to be doing this for awhile.

Location: oak lawn IL | I tried the neo gloves before and they blow (I never tried the fleece lined)...hands froze faster than being out in the cold bare..
under armor sells what they call a release glove that i wear as a base then cover with fleece gloves, just cant get it wet.
for wet enviorments I use a pair of ducks unlimited gloves.. both set ups are awsome

| jim - from experience with both, i can assure you that there is a HUGE difference between a generic (what i call "cheapo") neoprene glove and a high-quality pair such as the Glacier Gloves.
like everything, you get what you pay for. it's a mistake to generalize from the inexpensive ones to good ones. |

Location: minocqua, wi. | farm gloves for less than $5.00 from ace hardware or menards ... have them on when you're driving and then suck it up. mind over matter ... choppers for around $15.00 from the same source if it's less than 10 deg. air temps.. my guess is we'll be slightly above freezing and you won't need gloves anyway. but then i ride my sled in a windbreaker and jeans too. maybe it's good to be norwegian, sure looks like i've saved a lot of money after watching the threads. |

Location: minocqua, wi. | i got the pic and i'll send it so you can post. relaxed having a little outdoor nap. and brad, our thanksgiving adventure was below the 10 degree mark with 10 inches of new snow ... a light pair of $1.00 cotton gloves was appropriate for the elements that day.
oh, and last friday evening while you were curled up in front of the fire of the cabin ... team sled was out in the howler for a little night fishing ... an elements competition ... no problem ... i'll play. |

I'm going out tonight to finish off the collection with a list that will look similar to yours when its all done.
And if it gets cold enough where we have to wear all that we're going to have to troll because I don't think it's humanly possible to cast wearing that much clothing!

Location: minocqua, wi. | sometimes we even drill holes ... first it's a snowmobile trip through a couple feet of slush across the first lake ... then through a woods up to your hips in snow dodging trees through the woods that separate it and "lake x" and then more slush across "lake x" to the backyard of the wild side of the northwoods ... jig a few gills (while i take a nap), have a few beers and then head back to try to get the truck unstuck out of about 4 feet of snow on the unplowed landing .... oh, and it gets better cause there's a trailer on the back of the truck that's stuck too .... and if you survive it and get out .... mixers at the shamrock with julie .... happy days, man i can't wait for the real weather to get here!
you guys don't know what you're missing while you're spending money on baits at the shows ... another sickness is going on up here then! |
