Posts: 241 | What is everyone using for a reel when throwing Pounders? I'm giving serious consideration to the Abu Garcia Revo Rocket for Mag Dawgs. Before dropping some major bucks, I'm curious to know what others use. I'm all set with the rod. It's now the reel I'm interested in. Backdraft

Posts: 991 | rocket would be great for mag dawgs I imagine...I do use a tranx hg but with that said I actually use the 401D a lot for pounders and like it but all of the other reels mentioned would work well also

Posts: 1638 Location: Minnesota | I know you think the Tranx is to heavy. But put it on a 9 foot 8 inch rod and it balanced out very nice.

Posts: 294 | I own an Abu Beast 60hs as well as a Lexa 400 hs and they are both great reels. With that said, I prefer the Lexa for rubber. I want to try the new Rocket though.

Posts: 72 | As was mentioned before, it depends on the rod length and action, and what reel feels most balanced while casting. For me, I tried a Tranx HG on my 9' XXH rod, and I found it too light, so went back to a 700TE. Just feels right to me.

Posts: 750 Location: Minneapolis, MN | Personally I use a Tranx, but I used a Diawa Saltist before I got the Tranx and I also liked that, for the money I don't think it can be beat.

Posts: 3156 | Rod tip, anti reverse and gloves,,, in less you plan to straight reel em in,I think the rod tip is the most important that imparts the action with the reel used to take up slack,,you pretty much just lob them out there what is key is a strong anti reverse to absorb shock of ripping bait and that's where the gloves play in you can absorb alot of that shock putting your thumb on spool when you rip gloves keeping thumb warm and dry.

Posts: 1188 Location: Iowa | My pounder reel was a Diawa Saltist STTLW20H-C spooled with 100 lb Max Cuatro with a Tooth Tamer XXXH heavy fast action rod until I donated it to Lake Vermilion on the final day of the Larry Ramsell outing this year off Jacobsen's Point. Never was able to catch it and get it back either.
