Subject: ABU Garcia Experience, SOLVED

Last Sunday I had the worst experience musky fishing yet. Casting a glide raider in about 20 feet of water with my revo toro the mount on the reel broke, with the momentum of the reel the rod was ripped from my hands and the hole set up ended up in the water. Thankfully a friend was able to snag my rod before it sank to the bottom. But as he pulled up the rod I realized the reel was missing, all was left was a small chunk of the base. Evidently the line had broke in the process allowing the reel to sink out of sight.
I called Abu Garcia obviously not happy, told them the story and what had happened and said I wanted a new reel as it was still under warranty. The reply I received was "the warranty does not cover it if it's lost or stolen" and they could do nothing for me.

Also I'm now looking for a new reel, any opinions on the Diawa lexa 400

Sorry to hear that. I would be royally peeed too but I'm not suprised at all. To Garcia you might just be lying...not saying you are but I see what they're saying. No reel company is going to buy your story and give you a new reel...just not gonna happen. Not a fan of the Lexa at all.

if you got the rod back shouldn't you have the reel seat in the rod to send in for your warranty?

I'm sure you're right.

I would have sent in the reel seat. My reel experiences have me using shimano and penn reels.

I've always had great customer service from abu but then again I did not have anything like what happened to you happen to any of my reels. As far as the lexa goes IMO they are all short-lived for me.

After using a lexa for multiple seasons I have began throwing it more than my Toro S. I have only been throwing 8s and jerks though which the S is pretty slow for.

I will probably be getting the hyper speed HD lexa for rubbers next season after some more reviews come out. From what I have read online with the HDs is that they're decent.

Had a buddy who's Beast broke off his reel seat as well...

That buddy would be me ^^. Still love my beast just hope that it isn't going to be a continuing problem. My biggest fear is that I am going to get a big fish and have it snap during the fight. Still hands down one of the best reels I have used but that worries me. I would go for Shimano over Daiwa though.

That is a horrible situation you are in and I feel for ya. I would still send in the reel seat even if you aren't going to get it back. The people on the phone aren't the ones dealing with any of the merch so who knows maybe a guy at the repair shop might feel for ya and send you one anyways. Its definitely not the first one they are going to be seeing by the sounds of it.

I edited your post so that the facts were visible and omitted the desire to destroy abu.

if that's not ok, let me know and I can delete the whole thread.

However, be it a company we are sponsored by or a company that actively tries to steal our business, we do not allow movements to actively hurt a company, person, etc.

Send that reel seat in to Pure Fishing, attention Sonny Koenck. Tell your story, throw a little humor in and don't be a Richard, and ask him if he can help you out. If he is unable to assist you, I have a one year old NACL that I just refurbished, cleaned and lubed for a good price if you are interested.

I would blame it on the glide raider.

The issue may be determining 'how' the reel seat was broken, and it's not possible to tell without the rest of the reel in hand. Send it in with the sales receipt, the complete story excluding the angry stuff, and include an image of the 'small chunk' of the reel seat you are sending in with the piece in place on the rod, they may be more receptive to that. I think pretty much everyone will tell you ABU has a great customer service reputation.

Maybe, maybe not. If there's an obvious issue of porosity in the reel seat area, he may be in luck. Nothing to lose by sending it in.

I ripped a c3 off its seat on a hookset on a large mouth bass. Took the first eye right off the rod. I spoke to the retailer and they were happy to replace both and deal with the manufacturers on my behalf. I never had an issue. And have had my spools of line always returned with replacement products com Abu.

as a lexa owner, i'd stick with abu. when's shimano going to get their act together and give us a low profile, 400 size reel?

Buy what you like. Expect that it will break. You won't be disappointed. And don't worry - next year they will come out with a "better" one, and sell thousands of them to folks who think the "better" one won't break like the first one did. Lather... Rinse... Repeat.

If they made reels to last forever, they'd all eventually run out of customers.

But if you buy a reel and never use it, theoretically it will last forever. Like boats, from what I hear.

ABU looks like they will be taking care of Carpe esox on this one after reviewing the images and receipt. For the record, this was not a Beast, it was a Revo Toro Winch. This is a reasonable example of how to handle an issue after making contact regarding warranty... after slamr edited the original post.

Thanks to ABU for taking care of this, great customer service.
