Location: MN | I use a fair number of these each year. I get mine from a Shop in the metro and they are crimped vs twisted. Any reason to favor the twisted over a crimp? In my mind I trust a crimp more the a twist. |

Location: NE Ohio | i make my own out of 174# single strand bronzed wire and twist the ends with pliers. my finished twisted ends look like a quality made bucktail ends when finished. i've never even come close to a failure at the ends, it always gets kinked and bent when catching a fish causing me to switch it out. i figured if twisted ends are good enough for stealth, bucher, and many other top shelf leaders its good enough for me.
i end up making them for a fraction of the cost also. i can also make them however i want, long, short, bb swivel, or solid ring. and i also just recycle the components from a bent and kinked leader onto a new one. |

Wouldn't a small pair of vice-grips (locking pliers) pinched to the end and swung around a few times work wonders? Dunno, just thinking about the way I'd do it if needed. |

Location: NE Ohio | i just use round nose pliers to make the loop, then clamp a small pair of vise grips onto the loop, then use a regular pair of pliers to wrap the loose tag end around the shaft as i rotate the vise grips. then after 4 wraps i just pull up towards the shaft with the tag end and the wire breaks off very neatly right against the shaft. there is no way you can cut it off and have it that neat. you can you tube that method, thats where i seen how to do it. after a few attempts you'll be a pro at it. |

Unfortunately I don't have a "round" pliers so I just use the smallest screw driver I have, vice gripped to my work bench, make the loop, take my pliers, hold and twist. I've youtubed it. NathanH...do that, I'll still record it and show you hillbilly method ;o) |

Location: MN | Thanks guys I have a number of round nose pliers and do a barrel wrap for bucktails. I didn't think that would be ok for a leader for some reason. I just knocked out a loop Looks fine and the break off method works for a nice clean break. That haywire where both pieces move is tricky. Thanks everyone! |

| Can I ask why you guys don't use fluorocarbon leaders say 100# test. In the heavily fished waters I fish I believe they can help. I've never had a bit off either and I've caught some nice sized musky and pike. Mind you not giants by the standards of some of the forums members but > 25 pounds , > 45".
Just a thought?

Location: NE Ohio | my waters are very rarely clear and jerks work so much better on wire IMO anyway, so why take the chance on floro? i know my wire will not cut no matter what happens and the fish don't mind it at all. thats why i use it. |

Why? Floro can be cut - plain and simple. I use to use floro but wont anymore, why risk having a big fish swim off with a bait in its mouth? Lots of anglers minimize risks of losing fish in many ways, this is my way. |

| LOL. We have this huge bucktail, blades whirring, tinsle flashing or a big rubber bait darting through the water. I choose to think a wire leader is not gloving to turn them off. I use wire and worry about other things |

I have always felt the same. Not saying I'm right though.
If jamming the rod in the water 12" away from the lure on a figure eight doesn't scare them off, I don't think the wire will... |

| Go to a craft supply store (ie. Michael's) and find a "jeweler's pliers." They're a round nose pliers and you can usually find them for a lot cheaper than most places. |

This is what I do because I have had the wire work its way into a split ring? The solid ring doesn't allow this to happen. I have been making them this way for Hummmm, 31 years this year. Zero failures. |

Of course, the wtd baits works better that way, also leave off swivel too! What length?, Tell me how long your wtd lure is 1st. The best would be an inch or two longer.
btfish - yes, I do as well use solid rings. The only time I don't if I go extra heavy (.035), its thick enough to stay on. Also make sure your split rings are good, making sure that are closed and don't have gaps between the rings of the split ring

| I have been using 174# solid wire on all my baits. Like previously stated, with everything else going on with the bait, the leader is not much of a concern. I use a tool from Jann's Netcraft to make my leaders. Also, definately make sure you use a round nose pliers. if you use a regular needle nose and bend against the straight edge, you will create a stress riser in the wire and this now becomes a weak link and a potential fracture point.
