What are your favorite open water trolling lures and what speed do you run them? I'm mostly looking for lures that run about 7 or 8 feet down.

I like Hosebaits but there a bit spendy. Believers , Stalkers, and Jakes will get it done. Don't overlook spinnerbaits.

My best producers lately are the Sebile Koolie 190 BRL and the Tuff Shads.

If it`s open water and your not going to lose baits buy the best. Danato, Boss Shad, Muskie Train, Slasher, Frankie baits, Wiley, Scuba and If Frank says Hoserbait I would try that too. The legend line is also very hard to beat.

Kraves, Custom-X's, and Jake's at about 4 mph would be worth a shot. 40' of 80 lb powerpro should get you down to your desired depth.

Muskie Train MX6 has produced a lot of 50"+ fish for me and customers in open water. MF shads and MX7.5" are producers also.
Grandmas and Jakes are good too.
Speed from 3.5- 4.0 has been good for me

Wow. Lots of LSC'ers and Canadians . The best by a loooong shot are Supernaturals. The other baits are good too, but the Supernaturals have that unique lip that makes them wander like crazy.

Our 9" SS Shad has all the attributes needed for open water trolling ie. water displayment, wobble and flash.Three things to consider for that application. We caught 3 fish doing what you described.
2 on the 9" SS Shad and 1 on a spoon trailing them. The fish were down 15' over 30' of water.Trolling at 4.7 mph.Remember you can never fish to high in the water colum but you can fish to deep!

To go along with this thread, what do you guys consider to be the best/favorite line counter reel for effectively trolling large crankbaits for ski's?

I've caught fish and had no issues with both the Okumas and Cabelas linecounters. Don't have to spend a lot for those, either.

Tekota is a very save bet, very smooth with a lot of power.

I like to troll depth raiders, jakes, slammers and super shad raps.

Just because you troll, doesn't mean your handicapped. Sometimes you have to fish smarter not harder.

Andy, do you use live bait for musky?
Not much different in my opinion.

If you don't like trolling, don't troll.

Year-in and year-out my best baits for open water trolling have been tuff shads (5" and 8") and d-raiders (jointed and straight)...3.5 to 4.5mph

This is news to me... I've caught many a fish while my bait is downright grinding the bottom... Probably my favorite way to catch em. I've seen them pin baits with their noses to the bottom, and I've caught fish that follow my bait on the drop and eat it vertically going straight downward... Witnessed it happen below the boat in ultra clear water... More than a few times. Everything has a time and a place, hard and fast rules for fishing are usually flawed IMO. Trust your graph, mark fish, and put your bait in front of them... Wherever they are. Good luck.

Agreed they do go down for baits. Smoker does make a nice shallow troller though. Casters always take shots at us because we catch more and bigger fish. They are handicapped just because they cast.
