| How do you decide to add a splitring on Gliders or not?

| I put splitrings on all of my lures, and make all of my own leaders with no snaps. I connect the leader directly to the splitring. I don't know who, but somebody on this site gave me that tip, and it works very well.
Put a splitring on all of your gliders, and cut the snaps off of your leaders.

| What about changing lures. Do you carry a splitring pliers? Doesn't that weaken the splitring opening and closing it all the time?

| I wouldn't worry about weakening the split ring by opening it but using a split ring seems like an unnecessary hassle to me. I use cross-snaps on all my gliders while testing them and find them very convenient. Most all of the oversize baits I use out here for salmon and steelhead have gone from split rings to cross snaps in recent years...they are incredibly strong and I have yet to see one fail.

| I don't need splitring pliers. Most of the time I just use my trhumb nail. I can change a lure just as fast without a snap. Just eliminating another chain in the link that can weaken.

| I put split rings on all of my gliders and jerk baits, it enhances the action and also makes for faster lure changes!

| I do. When I make a leader for gliders/jerks/cranks, I put a barrel swivel on one end and a loop on the other, that's it.
I use ballbearing swivels for bucktails.

Location: mpls | I use split rings on all of my gliders as well. I've only had one problem. I had the leader slide between the split ring causing my lure to come off. If anyone finds a Bluegill pattern Hustler on Lake Calhoun. Send her back home, she caught alot of nice fish for me in the past. Uhhh, I mean. Send her home. Sentimental reasons, never did any good on it - you don't want to keep it(Jedi Mind trick). |

| I have lost 2 lures and 1 fish due to the leader backing out of the split ring. I try to check it before each cast but it can happen in as little as a dozen good hard twitches. It is back to a quality snap and not a problem in the last 2 years. |

With all due respect. I'd like to suggest that you try a welded ring in between the split ring and the leader. The welded ring of choice should have a much larger diameter than the leader and if the split ring does not have a gap at the opening then you should be fine. If it does have a gap then you need to replace the split ring. Look at the "leaders" post on the fishing reports page of my my website. I have photos of leaders I make with welded rings. There is good info on that whole post from all threads. I know alot of guy's that use welded rings and, like I, have never had a bait come off from that set up. The key is the split ring has to be tight at the opening. Good luck out there!

I, too, use the solid rings, but plan on using two in the future as I've now seen one fail...not on a fish, but on a snag. Still...
Beav, why use a swivel? Haven't used a swivel in years, and have no problems with line twist with jerkbaits, topwaters, or any bait for that matter...even in-line bucktails. Eliminates another possible failure point. I tie directly to the loop in my 180 lb. flouro.

Dead pull on a snag...*bing*...line and leader came back, but no lure. Closer inspection revealed solid ring had failed. Boat partner was pulling pretty hard though, I must admit.

| WOW! That is almost unbelieveable. You would think the knot from main line to leader and/or swivel would have failed first. Or the drag would go. I assume you were using braided line? Un-friggin real!

| Geeeez, I guess I'm old school but I'm just getting use to solid rings instead of swivels on crankbait leaders. I have not had any snap trouble since they came out with the new Stay-Lock snaps. Splitrings use to be the weakest link of all. Is the reason everyone has more confidence in them because of the extra strength ones that have come out? Just curious.

Location: West Bend, WI | I use bucher rings on every bait I own.I make my own solid leader with 124# test wire.You get 30' for two bucks at fleet farm.I put five twist at each end with a tool I have.It was about eight dollars at fleet farm.I tie direct to the loop at one end and a dab of super glue,other loop on the split ring.No failer to date  |

| I quit using split rings on gliders becuase i've lost a few from the leader sliding inbetween the split ring. I WOULD NEVER RISK THAT AGAIN. if your using a glider with a lot of force and change direction you may want to make sure your wire isn't slinding through. |

| No problem Joe. I'm sure you will have success with it. Just remember to replace your split rings when they start to gap at the opening. Bucher and Wolverine split rings are very strong and tight. That is what I would recommend you use. Good luck out there!

| I put splitrings on everything but hair. Some of the bucktails just have a eye too small for the rings. I am working on a solution to that as we speak. |
