Posts: 1046 | THIS IS NOT INTENDED TO DIS ANY COMPANY WHATSOEVER! Its just to see if anyone else had problems with any of those expensive baits from the past season? Myself its #1 the pacemakers(4-total)was nothing but a big headache for me,hooks tangling(i hate wasted casts)poor hooking ability and the finish came off easy.At 25.00 a pop I will use other things. #2-10" Jakes(new)I had 3 sinkers(still love`em though!) #3-bulldawgs the tails kept getting hooked on the back treble for me, more wasted casts Anyone else with some expensive headaches?

I have problems with the Jerkos. Hooks hooking together make me mad.

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | I got a easy fix for the tangling hooks problem. Little bit of heat shrink on the hook and split ring. Not a guranteeed fix but i think it might work. My own problems werre both finish related. A Cobbs crankbait that the paint split down the belly on, took on water and started running crooked. And a Bagley DB08 that started to do the same, stopped using it before it got as bad as the Cobbs. Using a little clear fingernail polish to try and seal both up. My other complaint is all the lures I used except one failed to catch fish and at that the one that did work only caught me one. Of course that one could be mostly my fault as at least three of those baits had missed hooksets on my part... Edited by kevin 12/30/2003 3:58 PM

Posts: 1335 Location: Chicago, Beverly | The leaking Jakes thing seems, to me at least, a thing inherited from Gramma. I have quite a few old Gramma's that take on water along with Jakes. To the point where I now try and seal the areas around the hook hangers on all my Gramma's and Jakes with clear finger nail polish.

Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | Jerko's do tangle hooks. It sucks but it's just the design. Bulldawgs that get tangle up: Dogball. Use it next time it happens For me the only disappointments were suicks!! Every 9"er I bought this year had an uncentered line guide eyelet. It's taken me hours getting them to run true. Owe yea, the Squirly Jakes I got leak, but what do you expect from a Maina bait.

Posts: 802 | shallow invaders: paint peels off like a sheet of paper; big ernie with a split seam thats takes on water. but the worst are my bobbies, phantoms and cisco kids;they keep getting snagged on big toothy things steve

Posts: 1462 Location: Davenport, IA | The tangling hooks of the pacemaker are easy to fix. The hook that has only 2 point should be cut off. Then take a 5/0 hook and take all the points off and put it on w/ a split ring. One lure I found to have problems was the shallow bulldawg. It wouldn't come in straight. No matter what speed it ran on its side. Edited by Schuler 12/30/2003 7:38 PM

Posts: 3480 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | I had problems casting Depthraiders this year...seems that about every 3rd cast or so, the leader would catch the hooks. Could not seem to get them to cast straight without "swirling in the air" so to speak, which then the leader always caught the hooks. Missed a fish due to a hit that came on a fouled plug... I figure it was more me than anything...but any suggestions would be appreciated. Steve

Posts: 605 Location: Marshfield, WI | Hi, I had the same problem with the leader getting tangled with the hook on phantoms. I love the lure though. Any help with this will be appreciated too.

Posts: 7036 Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Seems as though there is more bait tangling on dawgs when you lob them....or force them to go long distance on the cast. Just a thought.

Posts: 236 | Something I do whenever I start tangleing my leader in the hooks is to lightly thumb the spool through the whole cast which keeps the bait pointed straight at you so the leader never gets a chance to foul. give er a shot.

Posts: 605 Location: Marshfield, WI | I know how to prevent them on the cast. I can usually get nice casts without thumbing, but right before the lure hits the water, I apply thumb pressure to the line and then when the lure lands, the line, leader, and lure are in a straight line. Otherwise, sometimes they will land tangled, resulting in wasted casts. Krishna

Posts: 2059 Location: Belgium | new style bulldawgs with the modified shape and internal stainless steel frame. The frame bends easily and the tail often snags the rear treble. Once the frame has been bent, you need to TUNE the bulldawg and it's near impossible to get it to run great again.

Posts: 642 Location: mount prospect illinois | Interesting about the Jerkos and the hooks hanging. I love em and really dont have that problem (although i cant say it has never happened) Try the shrink wrap on the hooks. As for the Burts, maybe you are not sweeping the rod enough. Try a short sweep/pull (not as much as say a suick but more than a tap) and see how that works. I like using burts as well and havent had that problem.

In regards to the new bulldawgs. I wish they never changed #1, the body design. #2 the new color paint jobs look horrible. They had it made with the old style mold (granted it took a little more time to make). And the old color schemes were much more appealing. I would be willing to pay more for the old style baits. I hope they go back to how they made them last year. Also, the old style mold seemed to swim much more erratically than the new injected mold baits.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Leaky 8 and 10" jakes(probably had a dozen) topped the list though Musky Mania was very good about getting replacements out so no complaints there. Hopefully things are better with them though, as I'm hesitant to order any for the moment from Durst as it is a pain sending stuff back and forth.
The Undertaker that I bought just popped up all the time even working it as slow as the guy fishing with me who was making his dance perfectly(I have one of them to trade). I guess I wouldn't really call either of these major problems, as Jakes remain some of my favorites and I'm sure the problem has been corrected, and Undertakers catch a lot of fish too, I just got a lemon.

Posts: 32885 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | That Undertaker will be one of your best baits in the box! I have about a dozen, all of which will pop the surface if worked like other baits. You need to literally LEAD an Undertaker, reacting to each movement with a twitch type rod tip movement that makes the bait go the direction you wish next. I can make an Undertaker pop left and right on, just under, or quite a bit under the surface, and with a tiny adjustment, make it suddenly dive 5' or more, stop, and slowly turn. If you can get to the Madison MI school in March, I will run your lure in the pool and show you what I mean.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Steve, I'd be glad to trade it for another one. I've used Ut'rs that my buddy owns and have caught fish on them. This one just will not stay down, no matter the retrieve. Even he hates the thing and he swears by em'. I can make it dance if I work it super slow....super super slow. I like his, as you said, it can be darted down at most any time, and that is why I bought the thing to begin with. Come on down south of ten this spring, and give it a toss, while I cast one of your good ones. Maybe we'll even catch something.
