| Who here fishes with a dog in their boat? I am told that labs are too hyper and will try to chase your bait when you cast...
What is the best bread of dog for the boat? |

Location: North Central IL USA | All depends on the dog. My last Lab was cool as a cucumber. I'd get a yellow lab if you're planning on taking him out in the summer. The dark coats really soak up the sun and they get hot fast. |

| Labs are intelligent...if you want to train them to be a fishing dog I suspect they’re as good as any dog? I have an 8 month old lab , I think the problem is I want a retriever and all he wants to do is be in the water and/or play fetch!! I don’t plan to fish with mine in the boat ... I haven’t got much fishing done this fall but we’re putting a hurting on the ducks:) |

| Just an unscientific observation but living on the lake I have noticed the majority of folks that fish with a dog have a lab. But then, they may be the most popular dog with people who like the outdoors. To me, it would be a nightmare having to worry about a dog in the boat. |

Had a black lab that was amazing in the boat, she would just curl up under the console and kick it. Have an Aussie Sheppard and Akita mix now that is also cool as a cucumber. It's all training. |

| I think it depends on the age of the dog more than breed. Our lab sits on the back deck and only moves to bark at the cranes. We took our teddy bear pup out and had him launch over the side a couple of times at lures. We got a little worried later in the day after we raised a couple 50+ on LOTW. |

| Not good: my buddy's wiemreiner? got cold and shivered the whole time. Then fell in and sank like an anchor.
Not cool: my friend's dog, in another boat, lasted about half hour until it got a treble through its nose.
I'd vote lab, well trained. And good luck with that.

| I had a great black lab, she loved being in the vote. She too would curl up under the console. Always brought some water and a dish for her as well as a few treats.
Once my dad and I took her out late in the fall. She was shivering and I had a lot of clothing in the boat. So, I put a coat on her, zipped it up, threw the hood on top of her head and tied the arms around her.
She sat in the seat and was super happy.
We motored by a neck down area on a lake, there were folks shore fishing and they were watching us. They all pointed when we went by and started laughing when she looked over at them and they saw a black lab beak staring back at them.
Truly a trip I'll never forget, just because of that.
Man I miss that dog. She was a great one. |

Location: Lockport, IL | I had a golden retriever who was excellent in the boat. She wasn't allowed on the casting deck while we were chucking baits, but we'd let her up whenever we got a fish in the net. |

Location: Lockport, IL | I didn't realize she is in my avatar pic when I posted. She had cancer and we had to let her go this past May. She was almost 10. I always thought we'd have more time than that. What we had was great though.

Location: Duluth | Thread gave me nostalgia and reminded me of how Getty (my black lab) would jump in my canoe whenever I was getting it ready. Yea, she was that chill that I could have her in a canoe musky fishing with no issue

Once she even exited short leashed when driving, that was heluva fast trolling run.

Location: Contrarian Island | I've had 2 Golden retrievers and both have been great.. hard to beat any of the retriever breeds... just set boundaries right away … I don't let them on the front deck to keep away from baits

Location: Illinois | Spin loves to fish. He will stand by your side and fish, all day. The first time I took him fishing... I busted out a spinnerbait. He saw the lure... and fishing has been his favorite activity, ever since. Watches for follows... and does not get too crazy when you catch a fish. He actually calms down if he thinks the fish are looking at him.
He is a Pit Bull, Shar Pei, Blue Heeler/Mix. Thinking he might have a little Boxer in him, too. He has all the "best" traits associated with each and every one of those breeds. Very loving and caring... and he takes what is important as far as the well being of people - serious.
He does get anxious the first time he goes somewhere, though. He seems to believe he needs to check everything out... and be well aware of what is going on and where he is - at all times. The first few car rides to a new place can cause some anxiety. Doesn't help that he likes to shake and throw slobber all over the place (like in Turner and Hooch). My friends really like that! LOL
Now, I know you might not go out and look for such a dog... but, if he can do it - I believe you and any dog on earth can enjoy some time in the boat. Just gotta treat them well... and find ways to get them to understand what is going on. Much of that came naturally with Spin... but, I believe it has a lot to do with what happened before we went fishing. I treat him well. He loves fishing.

Just keep your boat clean or ask Cory Allen to clean his when you go fishing together... and you are golden  |

| I have a golden and a Chesapeake. Both make great boat dogs! The golden just absolutely loves doing anything with me and the Chessie is all business, all the time. Couldn’t go wrong with either. If you haven’t trained a bird dog before a lab or golden would be the way to go. If your a sound trainer willing to hold your ground than a Chessie can’t be beat on the water..... If you need a smaller dog that does well in water a Boykin, water or springer spaniel are all seriously underated... |

| I've had 4 labs now and the 2nd dog Dozer was a nut case but totally cool calm and collected in the boat. Just sat there and mostly slept the whole time. We have 2 labs now and both aren't in the boat much. Too much liability and none are as good as Dozer was. Train and train and yet they just can't help themselves. |

Location: Hayward, WI | On my 3rd lab that loves the boat. I kept a rug in the boat that was thier spot. I could move it around a bit to keep them in the shade or on the back deck in the breeze. Keep lures out of the way and never allowed them on the front deck where I kept my rods. My dogs always had to play in the water a bit and I would let them swim before we got in the boat. When swimming they always would drink lake water so they would need pee breaks more often than normal. |

Location: Minocqua, WI | Past three dogs have been labs. I haven't taken either of them into the boat until all were at least 2yrs of age and we developed that boat trust. I try bringing mine out with me every day that I can. Only issues we have currently are the premature jumping out of the boat / or missing the pier completely and jumping out into the water as we head in and load up for the day.
