We will be heading up to eagle lake last week of sept into October. Anyone know of a good guide to get a hold of that week? Had a guide last year, said he was part of the union...mandatory lunch out of the boat, which we had to make him! NO MUSKIES.

Call Andy Myers Lodge

http://www.andymyerslodge.com/

Some days no matter who the guide is, you won't catch a muskie. That's why it's called muskie fishing, not muskie catching.

Steve herbeck would be a great choice if he's still doing it. But then everyone at Andy Myers lodge is great can't go wrong there. Good luck

Andy Myers is a great place, Cal is a great guide, but also check out Scotty at North Shore Lodge. Not really sure if any of them will guide you if you are not staying at the camp, but definitely worth checking out.

Thanks a lot everybody! It's time to put the muskies we're seeing in the boat, which means it's time to get a guide! Any idea on cost for the day?

I would bet no more than $250 for the day, that's what Cal charged us for Trout.
In 2010 my wife and son went with Greg (Eagle eye guide service) while I was bear hunting and that was $150 for 3hrs. 6pm-9pm they raised 9 fish but none committed.
The owner of the lodge we go to got a 53"er a couple weeks ago

Cal is a most excellent choice. I've known him for 12 years, and will be with him 3x in the coming weeks. We've had great success with Cal, but if for some reason the muskies aren't co-operating...you'll still have a BLAST with Cal in the boat. That's what I'm most looking forward to (though I'm sure we'll slay the muskies too)...just spending time in the boat with an all around great guy.

If a guide can't get you a fish on Eagle in late Sept/October, he probably shouldn't be a guide.

I've never taken a guide for musky (I'm too stubborn), but know several that have and came back disappointed. I don't have any names, but would highly advise to stick with a recommended guide, or make sure you have a conversation with the actual guide before you commit.

this is very good advice....some of the camps, especially on the Eastern part of the lake, do not have access to regular musky guides and will set you up with at best part timers, or Natives from the reservation ( who might know the lake but do not have much of anything to offer in modern equipment and tactics)....if you can't find someone to vouch for the name then don't do it

This is exactly what happened last time we got a guide. He was off the reservation, had some story about catching a 69" musky. He only threw small buck tails, didn't talk much, never saw a musky. He made the wife from our lodge make him lunch, which he had to eat off the boat on an island..."union rules!" $250 dollars and he expected a tip!! We stay at colegrove's which is on the eastern side.

There are days when some of the best guides cant put you on a fish if the fish dont cooperate . If its a good guide there will be plenty of other knowledge to be had and still worth every penny.

Jason we always stay at Birchdale lodge in Myer's bay right across from AML , I think he is now working for a couple different lodges.
BDL is 1 of them, and a good friend of Marcel 866-505-2600

Its defiantly (Steve Herbeck) from Andy Myers lodge’s hands downs, he knows that lake inside and out, he took me out one evening last summer just for 3 hrs hooked 2 fish out the west arm rocks everywhere on the ride out. Then it got dark and I said Steve how in the world are you going to get us back in the dark without hitting a rock, right back to the dock we went no problems at all he knows every rock in that lake I think.

I have no doubt the guys from Andy Meyers are great guides, but we stay on the north east portion of the lake and AML is far west. How would that work if you wanted to book one of those guys? Would they come to you or would we go to them?

Cal was guiding out of North Shore Lodge last week when I was there. I think Cal and Scotty would be the top choices with Mike Mireault and Herbie not guiding currently

Scotty (Jages) at North Shore has been fishing for over 20 years for Skies on Eagle.I fished with him when he was 18 years old out of Temple Bay.Great Guide and hell of a person. I don't know of many guides on Eagle with over 20 years plus targeting mainly skies like Scotty does.
Good Luck!

to answer your question...most of the guys mentioned here would require staying at the lodges they work out of. There used to be a handful of AML guides, some of the lesser known ones, that did "side jobs" but that's more of the exception then the rule for most of them. IMO, there's only a handful of guys I think are worth dropping money on so be cautious on whom you hire.
