Has anyone else here of a state record caught yesterday morning? From some pretty good sources I heard a 54 to 58 incher was caught out of Shelbyville by a bass fisherman. Just wondering if anyone has also heard of this fish. Thanks, Al

I'll be fishing Shelbyville starting Friday so that is good news, hopefully released and not kept?

The first report of it I heard was 58. A few hours later it was 53". There is also rumor that it didn't quite make the weight to be a new state record but still an awesome fish for IL

Probably a line class record though. Hopefully the pictures will surface soon.

I heard the same story, then had an email from Kyle Marsanick from Smoker Tackle.
He sent me this picture, and to paraphrase:

Hey guys,I saw something today that would make us diehards cry.I witnessed a 53 1/4in musky from the river caught by a CATFISHERMAN on a WORM.He drove all over trying to find a certified scale.1 1/2 hours later he found a Fed Ex in Effingham that had a scale big enough,The fish wieghed 38.2lbs 1 1/2 hrs after being caught. The record is 38.8lbs by the way.I would have sworn that this fish was the record right after landing. She was full of eggs when she was BEACHED and was spitting them out as he hauled her up the hill to the back of the car.Just wanted to share the sick feeling.Let me know if you get these.Catch you all later

Sure make me sick to see one like that killed, I know it's all within that guy's legal rights, but sure is disheartning.
I'm gonna start using worms!

That picture looks like it's a spillway fish.

Yep, the spillway in the background is a pretty good tip off.

no rumor I caught the fish kyle told me tonight she was 54 inches with a girth of 24 inches by the time I found a scale she weighed 38.2 sorry guys that I kept her. I knew she was a record. But since there were no scales close she shrank I feel she weighed well over 40 pounds

Dennis, nice fish! Too bad you couldn't find a scale close enough. And you don't have to apologize to nobody for keeping this trophy. Get a great mount, and enjoy it.

I think this would be a good time to point out to all, that we should probably make researching a nearby certified scale part of your fishing plans. I know where I'm going when I catch that next record on Green Bay!

Nice fish Dennis.

Don't listen to the guys who chastise you for keeping it. You were within the legal guidelines, I am happy for you.

Hey Dennis, congrats. I wouldn't listen to those who say "too that bad he killed it". I have never killed one, but won't hesitate to put a beauty on the wall like that. That's a heck of a catch, again congrats!

Congratulations on a nice fish and I hope the mount turns out well. What happened to you is something I have thought about, weighing the fish fast enough to keep the state record weight. Without a certified scale on the lake, such as Lake Webster in Indiana, you did the best you could. It is a nice trophy for sure. I just like all big fish to be released to grow bigger, but big is relative to the waters you are fishing.

Dennis,

If you send the pics to me I'll put them up for you. Email: [email protected].

To all nay-sayers:

Who cares if he kept the fish or not? It's within his rights to do so. Also, a fish that big in IL is probably near the end of its lifespan anyway.

As a side note, maybe us IL fishermen should try and get some certified scales closer to places like Shelbyville or Kinkaid. Anyone know where there are certified scales near potential record lakes (like Shelbyville) that are within an hours drive? Didn't a group of people get one specifically for Webster? If so, maybe those who fish Shelbyville should also? Just a thought.

On Kinkaid the local DNR biologist agreed to come down and verifiy the fish so it could still be released afterwards. If you recall Chad Cain caught a very large fish a few years ago and the DNR came down to verify it. It was a bit light and was released. It would have still been released if it was the record as well...I think this is still the set up there...Ben

Not sure who got the scale put in Lakeside on Webster, but its nice knowing its there if ever needed. But the Idea is that its possible to catch the record, have it officially recognized as the record but still release it. Having it witnessed by the DNR is big, however in Indiana it is possible that if its witnessed by several people who are willing to sign affidavits as to the weight, that it does not need to be seen by the DNR. This is according to Jed Pearson, the top guy in the IN DNR for Musky. Butcher shops should have certified scales including those in Grocery stores. Possibly feed stores also. Not sure if they would do it, but I am thinking that if you contact the dept of weights and measurements they may be able to supply you with a list of certified scales in the state..

Congrats on the Trophy..

Big fish, sounds like she lost alot of eggs before you got it weighed.

the Scales on Webster was purchased by Dr Jeff for the Webster Lake Musky Club and we talked the Lakeview into taking them.
