Posts: 52 | Was thinking of getting rid of my super big stuff as even in the fall I feel like I do decent with the mag dawgs, reg dussas , and 10 inch swim baits. Would I be making a mistake by doing so you think?

Location: Contrarian Island | there seem to be places the bigger stuff works a bit more (at times). LSC and Vermilion and Mille Lacs are 3 that come to mind. other than that I personally have not thrown a Pounder bulldawg or any rubber that size in 5 yrs and the 50" count hasn't slowed.... do they work? sure. are they required. Not in my opinion.

Posts: 716 | Depends where you fish. MN fish seem to prefer larger baits...especially the big ones.

Posts: 2318 Location: Chisholm, MN | Pounder bulldog is one of my top 5 best baits all season long. One of my new favorites is the whaletale though. You couldn’t pay me enough to stop throwing big rubber. The only time I wouldn’t throw it is when the fish are spawning or immediately post spawn in the shallows. I’ve caught maybe a few fish on mag dawgs. I just never throw them.

Location: Contrarian Island | always interesting debates.. you never throw mag dawgs so it's hard to know if you would catch more or less fish ? I'd bet you have a pounder on most of the time (or other big rubber) so won't you catch most of your fish on it? lol .. confidence in a bait goes a long way too.

Would I be making a mistake by doing so you think? If you do well on the smaller baits and have more confidence in them then I don't think it would be a mistake getting rid of the bigger stuff. It will also be a lot easier on your body.

But also presentation. I feel I know where a pounder is all the time, so I work it right (in my mind). Mag dawgs are absolutely great, I’m sure. But I do know big baits draw a lot of attention. And if you’re fatigued by a pounder, you don’t have the right rod and are casting it wrong. Obviously a mag dawg is easier but I like the pain!

Posts: 20211 Location: oswego, il | What's interesting about LSC is that the casters throw pounders and the trollers troll 6" jointed baits and catch big fish too. Shadzillas and other paddle tails do very well on LSC as do the regular medussas, smaller than a pounder. Ironically the Webster PMTT was won catching mostly 30" class fish on pounders. Some of this is self fulfilling prophecy

Posts: 3147 | Rollie and Helens alpha dawgs in magnum are about the same length has a pounder,,don't have has wide of a head or weigh has much,,but with the extra long tail you get the big rubber bait with less weight. Alpha dawgs are cool with their lively tail just missed a hot fish on one.

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | I like to throw the Big dawgs... I think it is a split between the Pounder and the Mag Dawgs, My favorites are the double Dawgs for sure, a lot of action from those things. Never threw an Alpha. do they have more action ?

Posts: 52 | This maybe a better topic than I initially thought. Guess regular to slightly big baits vs really big baits.

Posts: 3147 | Jerome If your going to RIP em,,alphas don't really make a difference other then a little more hang,,,they shine when you hop them with your rod tip up or level or more pumps taps then the longer tail gets more supple and alive. Hopping them with slack and they dance.

Location: Neapolitan Chain Of Lakes | I would never ever get rid of your pounders! As soon as you do you know full well that those will be the hot bait or the only bait the fish will be hitting on your lakes. I mean I can't get rid of my old old 70's style baits cuz I remake them into something else or use them with upgraded hooks and add split rings and voila I'm catching fish from the back of the boat on that old turd bait that my partner laughed at me for using. Of course no experienced musky partner will laugh at you for using a pounder but I would keep them even if for some crazy reason they go out of style for a minute.

Posts: 572 Location: Germantown, WI | I have actually been downsizing a lot of my lures the last 3-4 years ( buck tails, rubber, and cranks) and actually feel like it has helped me put more fish in the boat.... so for me, confidence wise.... I will continue this trend.....

Posts: 59 | I haven't used a whole lot of pounder sized baits, but in my experience I've found that I get more follows with the big lures while getting more strikes with the normal/small sized baits.

Posts: 2011 | Pounders are easier to keep down 10+ feet, and still work aggressively.. just need longer pause in late fall to keep down, mags are a great bait too... but get rid of pounders is crazy talk!

Posts: 51 | I have a hard time believing a muskie would ignore a mag in its face but would hit the pounder all else being equal.

I have seen some situations where I believe the pounder has worked better. Hard on the body and probably not worth it overall though.

Posts: 716 | To further things. I have had many fall days were there was a bait size preference. Three guys throwing small, medium and extra large rubber and the fish would only show/eat on one of the sizes no matter where in the rotation it was put. Sometimes it matters and some times it doesn't. The only way to know for sure is to effectively present different sizes in a manner that shows quantifiable results.

Location: Neapolitan Chain Of Lakes | Since you already have pounders it's nice to be able to go home and grab one if that's what they're hitting. It sucks when a giant is caught right in front of you and you have to go buy a new one for $33 when you sold yours for $10. What makes it even worse is when you sold said $10 bait that you thought you'd get rid of to the person who caught a 40 pounder right next to you and all you got was a close up view of it while netting it and your shaking hands didn't get to hold it. Just ask my buddy. It is however, fun to ask him every time he takes a bait off in disgust if he wants to sell it to me! HAHAHA Edited by esox109 11/15/2020 6:35 PM
