Posts: 93 Location: WI | A buddy and I have just setup a weekend trip to Hayward this fall and I looked at the moon chat and saw it falls on a new moon period. I'm mot sure what to think about that. I hear a lot about the full moon but don't remember hearing much about no moon. I guess I'm looking for someone to tell me if new moon is good or bad or stories of success. Thanks!

Posts: 2015 | New moons are no good please reschedule to the full moon...the full moon is the only time big fish eat, that's why most lakes have twice the pressure on weekends that fall on the full moon...you need to fish the full moon... All my week long trips coincide with the new moon this year Edited by IAJustin 6/5/2013 3:44 PM

Posts: 1220 | There are two times in the month when the rising and setting of the moon occurs within moments of the setting and rising of the sun. It's when the moon is full and when it's new. My guess is that those are likely to be the "golden" moments when you don't want to be in the tavern or eating breakfast. On those same couple of days, the moon overhead and underfoot periods should also not be spent on a stool...just like on all days when you are fishing and can be concentrating on a good spot with your best bait. The moon stuff really works, except when it doesn't work. When it doesn't work, it's best to remember that you really don't know why it works when it "does work" so it's best not to attempt to explain why to people. I use a simple appproach to this not being any sort of an astro-physicist. I look to several of the people who I think are the best of the best of the musky world, and they seem to believe this stuff....so I do!

there is not much pattern to the moon phases in comparison to current weather patterns and water conditions.

That said, I expect most people would say that new and full moon periods are typically better than the quarter or half-moon moon phases. And the major and minor feeding periods are often the best times of the day. But not always. Fish bite when they want to and can be very hard to predict. As for my boat, many of our largest fish have been caught in the off-periods when there was no major/minor period or moon or solar activity. And not always in the best of weather conditions either. Sometimes the fish bite when one least expects them. I have found that using the major/minor periods, moon phases and weather conditions as a guide, I can usually predict Muskie activity about 50% of the time. (Basically what a chimpanzee could do.) So, yeah, I can't predict Muskie activity at all. I think the best time to fish is when you can. Edited by Herb_b 6/5/2013 5:11 PM

Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I would choose the new moon over the full moon for a fishing trip. Hunting too. Full moon is overrated. New moon is better in my experiences. Now you just need to pick the weather and your all set. Remember, weather trumps moon phase. I schedule my trips around the new moon every time I can.

Posts: 456 Location: Kansas City BBQ Capitol of the world | I can't catch Moon under or Moon rise (0605) this Saturday but should catch Moon over at 1321. If possible always try to get out on the New or Full Moon. Ron

Posts: 373 Location: Maine Township, MN | TIME2FISH Lite... Free App on Android. I like Joe Bucher's Moon Secrets in MH, but his times seem to favor moonrise / moonset and personally, I see better results around moonover / moonunder. I use them both. Edited by nocturnalmotors 6/7/2013 8:11 AM

Location: Contrarian Island | I don't like the new moon in the fall 'as' much as i do in the summer.. reason being is simple... I prefer the moon 'down' when i fish the most hours, in the fall the moon is 'up' during the day...most guys including me don't fish a lot at night in the fall vs. summer...weather will trump the moon but if i had to pick , i'd pick moon 'down' in the fall during the days i fish......regardless be in good spots at rise/set and moon up if possible......
