| never fished either of them but they look similar in appearence! do they function similar would be my first question?? I would like to give one a shot but dont want to buy both! |

| IMO hellhounds are Stevie wonder baits. I'm not saying you can't get erratic action out of them but, at least for me, I am able to get a more erratic action out of a phantom than a hellhound. |

Location: Sussex, NJ | Go with a phantom. You can hop it up, down, left, and right. The fish follow hellhounds but eat phantoms. I prefer being able to quick hop the phantom. The hellhound is a great bait and catches fish too but I like phantoms better |

I measured one for a fellow League competitor.
I also have had great success with that lure. |

Location: Madison, WI | IMO Hellhounds are much easier to work, however i have caught many more muskies on the phantom. For $17 i would get one of each and see what you prefer. i also agree with the follows on Hellhounds, its almost like the fish are mesmerized by them but dont seem to eat as often. |

| Phantom hands down. I currently have 9 phantoms and had 6 hellhounds(started selling them off). Every one of my phantoms has been eaten except for 2 of them(still too new, not enough time in the water). I fished hellhounds for 2 years before i had any action on them. It's hard to believe because they look so dam good in the water. In that time i caught countless fish on phantoms. Just this last year i finally caught one on a hellhound and had a few other follows. Go with the phantom softtails, they wont let you down. |

| I tried both and found I could work the squirelly HH better and deeper... Had more action on the HH, but definitely fished it more also.
One thing I don't like about the HH is the back hook occasionally gets hung up on the tail fin, but doesn't happen often and T-ing the hook helps also. |

there are alot of gliders out there they all work a little different and most will catch fish |

| Of the two, I use Phantoms more often. I can make them dance a bit more than the HH and fish it over shallow weeds.
If you are interested in custom baits, Musky Menace Hot Tails sold on here by River Musky are great and in the same price range. They can be worked liked a HH or deep and slow. The wobble is really sweet on the death pause. Great fall bait.

Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | I prefer Phantoms over hounds. but If I am grabbing for a soft tail glider, 98% of the time I am reaching for a muskie treat. The action is much more speradic then on either the Phantom or the Hound, and you can acheive depths with the treat as well that you are unable to do with either of the other two... Oh yeah, and they catch way more fish (at least for me) |

| Broadly speaking, I prefer Phantoms as well. That being said, I find HHs easier to work in general, but particularly in and around weeds. They seem to continue to walk better than a Phantom if a portion of a weed is caught on the rear hook. I also prefer their methodical glide over a Phantom in the fall. Overall, I can make a Phantom dart and move around more, yet get it to have the methodical glide very quickly. I also find it easier to move them with greater speed in comparison to HHs. Both good lures and have their own time and place as everything else. |

| Regular hell hound's....all i seem to get are friggin follows. Regular phantoms i've had no luck on......maybe the musky's need that extra enticing tail. Phantoms sure are nice lures though. |

| I've had a lot of follows on hellhounds. They work with ease, phantoms are easier to work irregularly, which I think is important. |

| Its easy to get either of them to dance anyway you want, up down left right both work both catch fish. My vote is hellhounds as rollie n hellens has my two favorite patterns crappie and northern pike. |

| I cant speak for the phantoms, never owned one. I have caught alot of fish on hell hounds.
One thing that has worked for me with follows, and you will have to pratice next time you have one out. Some of them will do it better then others, but if you give a HARD jerk straight back about 2 to 2.5 time the distance you would do for your standard walk jerks. The bait will dart forward, turn on its side as it goes forward then almost dead stop showing its side to the following fish. It took a little practice and only 2 of the 5 I own do it most of the time. I atleast have never become good enough to do it every time. but with a little practice you can get it to do it about 75%. Ive had multiple follows just crush it after that little trick. |
