Fished pre-sunrise on Saturday with Mauser and put in a good 8 hours pounding the waters of Cave Run. Same result, Jason, but what a wonderful fishing partner Mauser is! The Gambler ran like a top, the weather held well until it was time to trailer the boat. Dropping lake levels didn't help but we did get reports from one boat that they'd moved a few fish with no hookups.
This old geezer's back is grabbin me again, wonder how much longer I can throw them big baits all day? At least I have a week to recover! m[]

I was guiding both Sat. and Sun. and was struggling to say the least. Then the wind changed, both myself and my partner noticed the wind change. Unfortunately we hadn't raised any fish to go back on, so I picked up and went to the most productive spot on the lake. Within 45 minutes of the wind change we caught and released a 39 and a 41.5. Then it was over.

Sunday produced a sucker strike that resulted in a sucker that had severe tail damage. The musky just didn't grab the sucker far enough forward. My client just sort of dropped the wounded sucker back over the side of the boat and within 15 seconds the fish had the sucker again! Unforunately this one was never meant to be, because after hard hookset number 2 all my client got back was the quick strike rig! Sort of a funny story, 2 sucker hits on the same sucker in about 45 seconds. It just goes to show you that when a musky wants a meal he will get a meal no matter what it takes.

Fished with KLY on Saturday. We met predawn, he transferred a few suckers from his suckermobile, got some gas, and headed out for the day. By noon, Kyle had caught 2 small pike, and we had one follow. Conditions were a little tough, with the cold, strong wind making boat control difficult.

Around noon, I put the AP 65 on auto, and we ate lunch while slowly pulling our suckers across a deep hole. Lunch finished, we were deciding what to do, when one of the clickers went. I grabbed my rod, felt a fish, and reefed on it. Felt good, and then nothing. Definately a fish, as the sucker's throat was torn open. I was using new lift off hooks, and they turned back into the sucker and got stuck. Oh well, a report to the designer is forth coming.

Kyle had a hit on his sucker a little while later, but it was dropped. I raised a good fish on a Reef Hawg later, on a 25' breakline. That was it for the day. We trolled a little back to the launch, loaded up and were on the road at dark. A long day, but I had a great time, learned a new water, had a great lunch, had some action. Unfortunately, wifey had to work on Sunday, so I had to call Kyle, and tell him I couldn't go. The Extreme One, and Jason, were called into back me up, and sounds like they had a good time.

Kyle, I owe you one. Thanks for a great day on the water. Take care of the suckermobile! Til next time.

Fishing was actually pretty slow, but we had an awesome weekend. Fished Friday through Sunday with only one follow, which came on Friday. On Saturday I witnessed my first 50". My brother caught a 52" pig in the morning. Then about a half hour later I lost a mid 30" that hit a figure 8. Then on Sunday I caught a nice solid 44" fish. Very good weekend. Water temps were 48 to 52.

Now I'm going to go out today to see how much I can beat that 52 by.

I got whooped.

Lost a slob on that @@#$#$%#$%&%$%# Shallow Invader Friday night. I should have took the time to modify it before the trip! Fish completely inhaled the bait, I rolled her over on the hookset. Gasped at how fat her snow-white belly was.... hollered "I got her" to myself.... and then she just spit the bait! That's three lost fish in a row on that darn bait.... and this time it may have cost me a 30+ pounder.

Fished from sunrise to sunset both Saturday and Sunday and only had one lazy follow Sunday afternoon. With the fish coming in slow and low... we may have moved more fish but could not see them in the snow, sleet, and gusty winds. But... you can't take pictures of follows[:praise:]

My congratulations go out to Oneida Esox for taking advantage of the VERY small window this weekend. Good Job John!

Got out late Sunday afternoon (3:00PM) on north part of Petenwell with my son Billy. About 4:30PM I stuck a fat 37" on a fast channel breakline - fish hit (a Zalt 7 1/2"- 19cm) ~ 10' from the boat. Really savage strike!! Yes- ToddM. I fished muskies on non-trout water!!! I feel so used. [:((] [:p] [:0] [] When we loaded the boat out- it was starting to snow. Seems like the MF Cass Lake trip broke the seige.

AL (Esox maniac), Glad to hear the seige is over buddy.....I fished my last outing Saturday before the "Mini Green Muskie Machine" went into storage on Sunday. Fished a south central Wisconsin storm water runoff ditch that produced nothing but cold hands and a Slammer hook buried deep into my palm! AAARRRGGHHH!

The damage....
A couple of hotel rooms, several cases of bourbon and wine, and kegs of beer. It was Tomcat's wedding. It's official.

We had one fat 37" in about 4 hours. Caught on a 7 1/2 grandma trolling about 3.1 mph. We did not move in fish casting. I beleive the lake was turning over, 53 degrees and green slim on the surface.

Phish Killer- ....hey bud, one word -> "Barbless". How's Jon doing (Phish Killer2)??? God, I wish I'd of had my Zalt's up at Cass Lake. I got them when I got home.

Esox Maniac's staying out till the water gets hard. Right now she's sittin out there with snow on the boat cover. Hopefully we'll be able to fish up to the end of November. Going to go over to the local river & see if I can move a pike or two. Had a mid 30's and +40 moving a couple days ago- to darn many leaves in the water- I think the mid-30 fish lost sight of the lure in the swirling leaves. Just missed putting hooks into the +40.

On sunday I lost yet another fish. I just wish my luck would change one time. I cast most of the lake and decided I might as well troll. While I was trolling 17 feet deep and banging bottom with a big-m the clicker on my penn 9 started screaming I figured just a snag or some weeds so I slowly got it to and started reeling what felt like a ton of weeds and when I got it 20 feet away from the boat, there was a huge headshake from the weeds. And then the weeds were gone. You may think no big deal, everyone loses fish, but I have caught two this whole year and lost probobly 25. Oh well, maybe I'll get one yet this year.

Fished Cave Run with Mikie, no fish but did lose one great outfit, a 6'9" St. Croix rod that I traded the " Spongy One"
out of last year and a 6500 C-3. It found a watery grave in 35' of water. You should see my tear stained pillow!!!

[:blackeye:] [:blackeye:] [:blackeye:] [:blackeye:] [:blackeye:] [:blackeye:] [:blackeye:] [:blackeye:]
Hey!!! That means I have to buy a new rod, I have another 6500, any suggedtions for a new rod that will cover jerkbaits and Cranks???

Fished only Friday, as we had a wedding to attend on Sat. Got a 37 and 40" hybrids and a 35" true Fri. 35" true came on a jointed believer and the two tigers came to suckers. First time to ever boat two hybrids in one day. All fish were caught between 11:30 AM and 12:20 PM on Fri. fished till 4 and never saw another.

Way to go Al! Sounds like you are on a different streak now. Can't wait to get my hands on one of the Swedish hmmm baits. Spent a month in Stockholm when I was younger...what a place. Let me know how to get one of those Zalts. PK, I fish that drainage ditch all the time in the spring-must have been a bad day.

Al, I told you those zalts were good!

We hit the standy, in complete turnover mode and the trolling bite is gone. We had one on briefly and decided late in the day to cast areas least affected by turnover. I caught two dinks. Time to hang meat.

No fishing for me this weekend. I went duck hunting on Saturday instead. Shot 3 drakes and 1 hen mallard plus a bufflehead. I also missed a few shots. We also had a couple groups of bluebills buzz the decoy spread when picking up in the early afternoon. Overall, alot of action and a good time.

ToddM.....my Zalts will have to await a big fat suspender next year. No doubt they will put a musky or two in the boat. [:)]

Fished the Chip saturday for the first time this season. Water temps were 46 and the water had dropped about 8 inches judging from the scum on the banks. Water color was like coffee too, darkest I ever saw the chip. We tried the deep edges and river channels first with no luck, then slid into a shallow bay and moved 2 fish within 20 minutes, one mid 40's at the boat and an upper 30's out a ways. (11 feet casting up to a green clump of weeds) Couldn't get em to hang on to a glide bait, my glide bait woe's continue.[:((] The best day I ever had on the Chip though, after al the hours I put in there last summer, only saw one little guy, sat was pretty good, but none in the net.

Thx to Chris,Jim and Brian for inviting me up.[]

Had 5 days with my son and bagged a 44 and a 42. The 44 came at 4pm in the snow on a super shad rap. That was my boys. Mine came on Tuesday after I haden't seen a fish for 3 days. There were some bass chasing a pod of suspended minnows about 50 yards away, and, out of boredom I picked up my spinning rod, through on a zara spook, and, on the first cast, that 42 fatty hit. Great time![]
