Location: Des Moines IA | I just got my saltist, 40 HA, and really like it, simply for the fact it has a levelwind. I'm sure the trinidad is built beefier, atleast I would hope so since it's almost twice the $. The one thing I've heard about the saltist, is to be sure and back off the drag when not using the reel, but I try and remember to do that on all my reels anyway. |

Location: Contrarian Island | for burning bucktails I think the 16N is the best out there...I have a 30 size Saltist w/ Levelwind as well and I like and prefer the 16N...so the Saltist sits as a backup but has yet to come off the bench..the Trinidad drag is the best I have ever used and I'm sure it helped me a land a 50+ this summer solo... Saltist is half as much but the Trinidad might be twice as nice...they both do the job...all depends on what you have to spend really....

Location: Eau Claire, WI | I own a saltist 40 w/ LW. One season on it and a good amount of big fish....it does the job. I am happy and the price is right. I make casts, I retrieve lures, I catch fish. Good to go. I believe the problem du jour with them is the lever but mine has been fine so far.
I have no experience w/ the Trinidads so no frame of reference but I would go w/ Brad's assessment if making a choice.
With what I wanted to spend, the trinidad was a non starter for me.

| I bought the saltist 30 this year and its been great,,,I think its just a matter of time before they put a level wind on the trinidad at which point I'll get one.

Location: MN | I will be retiring my Saltist 40 this year as the reel was too big and bulky for me. I had some close calls loosing the reel/rig in the drink after bulldawgs + backlash + bad grip (too bulky reel) got the best of me. Also, the 40 has the high gear ratio and line pickup but not much for torque when it came to burning big blades. Personally, I do not like my Saltist 40 and willing to sell it if anyone is in the market.
However, I have used the Saltist 20 and think it's a good reel; it might make one of my rods down the road. I use my Trinidad 14 for most of my presentations and it is the best reel I have used.

| for those familiar with the daiwa luna 300 the avet sx's exterior diameter is very close if not the same for those who palm the reel...if the saltist had the handle on the left side many would jump on your offer...in my opinion the over the pond manufacturers are missing this big time...!

Location: Oswego, IL | I dont think you can compare these reels together. Thats like comparing a St Criox to an Ugly Stick. Not in the same class at all guys. There both big reels, move baits fast and thats about all they share IMO. |

| Im gonna get the saltist in the spring mainly because the levelwind. I've used both, and they are both strong reels made to take the punishment of big blades and other baits. |

Location: Barnesville MN | I have both the saltist 40 with the levelwind and a Trinidad 16N they both do the job but I much prefer the 16N much smoother and all around a higher quality reel but that should be expected for the price difference, I also have a Torium 16 which works well an excellent reel for the price. |

| After throwing a 6500 C3 for 30 years, I am looking at the Trinidad vs. Saltist. I want it for Cowgirl and I have a 9 foot rod. Any thoughts to hep?
1. What is the learning curve on the trinidad?
2. Has anyone had a saltist that lasted over three years?
3. what is the life expectancy of the trinidad?
4. what is the typical break on the saltist and is it fixable?

| Tom here's my response to your questions.
1. What is the learning curve on the trinidad? They are really not that bad to get used to, I would say one solid day on the water and you should have it down pat. Just remember to point your rod at the lure and the line will track itself, also don't fill the spool all the way full, more like 2/3rds.
2. Has anyone had a saltist that lasted over three years? I am not even positvie they have been out for 3 years, I have had a 20lw for going on 2yrs I think and its been rock solid.
3. what is the life expectancy of the trinidad? I have heard people say that if you keep the reel properly lubed it could last a lifetime.
4. what is the typical break on the saltist and is it fixable? Only thing I have heard of is the lever spring breaking,and this is after several hundred hours of use, this is minimal and should be fairly cheap and easy to fix yourself. I would say no more than 10 dollars for the spring.

Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | I have a Saltist 30 and used it A whole Bunch last summer, A rock solid reel,,,, but the lever is shot, so it needs replaced/repaired.... I still like this reel a lot.
I also have a Trinidad 16n that is built like a tank and after using it 2 yrs.with NO problems ,I'll be getting another one this season, but it will be the smaller 14 size, so I can palm it better.................................Both are great reels, but somewhat different from each other...... If your going to "burn" lures the Trinidad is the one to get.
