| Four guys in a group. Looking to head to northern MN for a long weekend of muskie fishing this September. We want to fish a lake that has a 50" in it, but are ruling out Leech/Cass/Mille Lacs in case the weather is nasty given it's just a weekend jaunt. Vermilion is a definite possibility, but any other smaller, more manageable lakes we should consider? Any lodging recommendations are also appreciated. TW | |||

Posts: 1767 Location: Lake Country, Wisconsin | I heard there might be a few lakes in the Bemidji area that might have a few big fish in them

Posts: 198 | The majority of muskie lakes in MN have 50's. All of the anglers are on Leech,Mil Lacs and Vermilion so you could have a smaller lake to yourself.

Posts: 742 Location: Grand Rapids MN | Get a MN Muskie Lakes book and that will give you some idea of where some lakes are located and what's in them.

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Spring Bay Resort on the west end of Vermilion has a really good "Fall" price and is a really great place to stay. Is $190.00 for a week's stay of Vermilion worth it?? "Ya shuurr, Ya betcha" Jerome

| Vermillion. Lots a BIG fish and less pressure in the fall. You can get out of the wind if it gets a little breezy. | |||

| the bemidji area for sure, lots of options for lakes and documented fish as big (or bigger) as anywhere else in the state with very very little pressure compared to the bigger lakes. | |||

| I recently did some internet research as I am looking for a summer cabin and good smaller muskie lakes. It payed off for me, I would recommend touching base with resort and lodge owners in areas you would like to fish in. It is amazing how much you can put together via the internet and lodge owners...good luck, Ben | |||

Location: Athens, Ohio | Don't let Vermilion's stated size scare you off, there are plenty of big fish within a couple miles of any resort you'd choose. You don't have to run the whole 20 miles to find fish, as we found out. You might also check out the couple of resorts on Big Lake near Cass, if you want smaller water, go to that county's website and look at the lodging lists. m

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Rich W, Talk to Joe at the resort, he will fill you in. I just landed a Const. Contract at one of the Mines in the area and may be staying there from Sept. 1rst to Ice up. Jerome

| There are quite a few lakes in MN that have had just as much stocking as V, ML, etc etc that don't get the press. It only takes looking at the MN website and stocking records to uncover some good gems under 3,000 acres. Bemidji will be a zoo come Sept with all the PreFishing for the PMTT there. I'd look elsewhere personally. | |||

Posts: 31 Location: sauk rapids, mn | If you don't feel the need to go quite so far north... Check out Lake Alexander and Shamineau, within 5 minutes of each other. They are near the town of Randall. Also, if you were in the Alexandria area, there is Lobster Lake and Miltona. If you go closer to Leech Lake area, check out Plantanginette, Inguadona, or Wabado. All good muskie lakes with their share of big fish. Maybe not the numbers of the big lakes, but fishable in windy weather, and a little more quiet in the fall.
