Posts: 1294 Location: Stevens Point, Wi. | Some great pictures, keep them coming. Maybe it's old age, or maybe it's being blessed with spending a long time time in outdoor pursuits, but as the years pass, the memories of fish caught and animals harvested seem to blend together and slowly fade. What still remains clear and detailed in my mind are the pictures like those above. ..an otter swimming around the boat, begging for a handout ..a mother duck playing the wounded wing trick to lure an otter away from her nest ..a mother deer and her fawn coming down to the lake for a drink ..the occasional sighting of deer, bear, and moose out for a swim ..eagles and ospreys soaring in the blue skies ..the haunting call of a loon at sunset ..the lonesome honking of geese in the fall as they seek warmer climates ..the deep throated sounds of bullfrogs from the weedy shoreline ..thunder clouds building in the hot, humid summer afternoons ..fog rising off the flat calm water on a cool summer morning ..a snow storm coming across the lake on a cold, windy day ..a burrowing owl, dive bombing me, because I was too close to her nest ..watching a pine marten hunting while sitting in a tree stand These, and many other memories are what I remember most about my time spent outdoors. For this I would like to thank my departed parents for giving me the opportunity to get started, my children, for allowing me to share my love of the outdoors with them, my wife, for putting up with my passion, and my creator, for supplying this never ending wonderment. Enjoy the journey!

Posts: 170 | The "quality" of these pictures is very bad, but I would consider the sighting pretty much once in a lifetime. Taken last year, almost to the date, up in Iron county. There is a sequence I have, but will just post two. The first one is "him" giving "her" a peck on the cheek. The second photo, well, I think you can figure that one out! This sequence went on for quite a while and if I had "volume" on the photos, you could hear him "rough housing" her pretty darn good!! Pretty awesome... Posts: 2024 | Wow, that's incredible! Think how lucky you were to see that! That happens maybe a few days of the entire year!! All the other pics are great on this thread, but the last two take the cake for sure (though the lightening strike and hummingbird pics are a close second and third). The first pic is a bluegill spawning pair. At the very top of the pic is a "sneaker" (cuckholder) male trying to steal a fertilization from the larger parental male. Just left of that guy is a "satellite" male whose appearance tries to mimic a female's coloration and behavior. The satellite squeezes itself in between a female and parental male hoping to slide in undetected (as if he's trying to start a threesome) to steal a fertilization once the female starts dropping her eggs. The second pic is a big male smallie guarding his nest. Posts: 170 | Yep, it was a rare sight, to say the least! Breeding season is right about now, so he (and she) were right on time!! To tell you the truth, after watching him push her around for a while (trust me, saplings were getting knocked over, etc), my buddy and I were fricken laughing so hard, it was crazy funny! As for the bear suit...ouch, I hope he was on the giving end!

| Thanks for the great posts. They are a reminder that you should be on the water in the wilds for more than just the fishing. Even though we live in the city we have great appreciation for the owl that sets in the tree at night and hoots at us as well as the pair of hawks that have raised young in our neighborhood. Their screeches and the piles of feathers they leave behind after their meal are reminders of their presence on an almost daily basis. | |||
