Location: Madison, WI | Doesn't have to be new (would be nice) but can work with a gently used boat. What boat makers have you had good luck with, what motors have you had luck with? 2 or 4 stroke? Is there a huge difference between rivets and welds? What else do you need too look for while looking at used boats? I've now heard some mixed reviews about the fish hawk; Joel, T.J. can you offer any feedback? I would prefer Aluminum but fiber isn't completely outta the question.

Location: Stevens Point, WI | The FishHawks are great all around boats! I really haven't heard too much for downfalls too these boats. I personally haven't owned one but have fished out of a few of them. Owned a Crestliner a few years back and loved it for what it was but just wasn't the ideal boat for everything I needed it for. The one thing I didn't care for on the FishHawks is how in the stearn the sides slanted up which I personally didn't care for but that was the only real downfall I did not like about the boat. But the room in the FishHawks is tremedous, good storage and a pretty good layout overall. I believe those boats are rated for like a 125 or 135 so plenty of power to get around. But definitely a good boat. |

| For that much money I would take a hard look at Lund tillers...I had a 95 Pro V tiller that was an awesome boat. fished big and small waters well.
Lund's to me are a step above Crestliners in quality/fit/finish etc...CLiners are nice but I think Lund goes a step above.

| you should look at the new duracraft boats(i think thats what theyre called) at heckel's. they are really nice. i think they were about 17' long with i think a 96inch beam and all aluminum, no wood so they weigh like 900 pounds. they also have a 50inch livewell. and they cost just under $13000. really nice boats |

| for your first big boat, i would strongly consider getting something used.
it's inevitable that you're going to make lots of mistakes as you learn to use/run/load/etc your boat, we've all done it. when it's a $5k used boat those knicks and gaffs are easier to accept than when you've maxxed your budget on a new rig.
i'd suggest getting an older boat with good brand recognition such as a Tuffy/Ranger/Lund/Whatever. there are lots of good options in the $5-$7k range if you look around. use that for a "learning curve" boat and as a bonus your payments are smaller. in a year or two from now when it's time to step up to a new/nearly new boat it'll still be worth what you paid for it and you can sell it.

I would highly recommend looking at Lund Pro-V, or Alumacraft Tournament Pro Series. Both have great hauls that handle bigger water, and a better ride than the crestliner. Also think their fit and finish is much better than a crestliner. I ran a tournament Pro 18' for several years, and it was a great boat, with a 75 tiller getting 35-40mph.

| On pg. #6 of the boat classifieds there is an 01 fishhawk `1650 tiller that looks very clean and is very reasonably priced it doesnt say sold? worth checking into anyhow. |

Location: The Sportsman, home, or out on the water | go to your local dealers. They want to move last year's hulls. you may find yourself in a new boat (no one has ever owned it). To move last year's hulls, dealers will almost bend over backwards. Also, finance rates are typically better on a new owner than a second owner boat. good luck, brother.

| just scored a sweet 2000 alumacraft... 17ft 88in beam semi V-hull side console. 135HP merc optimax 55 12/24volt motorguide. it was listed for 12K... so i told them to throw a 8 hp yamaha kicker on it... sweet ride. and i shopped for a month and found this. TRUST ME it was worth the wait  good luck in your search sir! |

Location: Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin | I bought my 1675 Lund Explorer in 2000 for around 12k. 60hp mercury, shorlander roller trailer, & 55lb minnkota rigged to go. At that time it was the most boat for the money. I have it paid off & still love it. Has everything I need & I have no regrets. I even mount up some lights to it and can bowfish for carp off of it before musky season opens. Does 25-30mph & handles big waves well. A friend of mine bought an Alumacraft Navigator about the same time & he says that the Lund handles the rough water better with the IPS hull. Another friend's dad has a Smoker Craft & my friend said it is a piece of you know what compared to the Lund, & he spent 16K on it. Buy a Lund & you will not be disappointed! I know I wasn't. |
