Posts: 670 Location: Otsego, MN | Kids are the future! I teach here in the metro in MN and when I give my kids a questionaire at the beginning of the school year, I ask them what they like to do. Some say play basketball, football, video games, watch TV, I had 3 kids out of 120 students put fishing down on their paper! It's kind of scary. We definetely need to get kids more involved in fishing and the outdoors in general.

Posts: 2089 | Jeff, you are right on!It's really up to us as sportsmen/women to take the reins on this one or our outdoor traditions will die. We all have very busy lives , that's why we have to MAKE the time.Lots of single parent families where the knowledge/resources/time just aren't available.I see large outdoor retailers popping up all over. Will they be there in 20 years? My guess is that the "industries" (fishing, hunting etc.) will really begin to feel the effects over time.Everyone who reads this thread should commit to taking a kid fishing this season.Son, daughter, niece, nephew, neighbor, kid from church. We need to make ourselves available. We teach, they learn.Surprising how many times it's the other way around. Posts: 2691 Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Good stuff guys. Kids are the future of our sport. I donate time every year to get more kids on the water. My tournament partner and I run a small 20 to 30 kid tournament every year on Pewaukee Lake. We hold it at Smokey's muskie Shop in June. We get the local guides and friends to take a few kids out and catch muskies, bass, bluegills, etc. We have trophys for everything and plenty of food after the 1/2 day outing, all of which we buy ourselves. I can't tell you the joy these kids show to all of us who make this possible every season. 1/2 a day to us and memories and storys for years to them. We also have "kids on the water" and "cops and bobbers" that is held here on Pewaukee lake. Thanks again to Smokey's Muskie Shop for helping donate bait, rods and some boats to make this happen. A special thanks to the guides who donate time to take kids out on these days. I have always went out of my way to get kids "hooked on fishing" and will continue to promote and help these causes every year. I agree with Steve: "Everyone who reads this thread should commit to taking a kid fishing this season.Son, daughter, niece, nephew, neighbor, kid from church. We need to make ourselves available." Right on brother Steve!!! Here is a couple walleyes from this winter caught by kids. I bet they remember this season and look forward to the next season. My son Mikey and a clients kid Jake both got very nice walleys this season icefishing. Think they will talk about fishing to their friends? Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | I've got my daughter (3y9m) casting a bait caster in the house right now. She's still a little wild, but she isn't backlashing. She was to the point last summer where she had to bait her own hook and she tried to take the fish off. Tip: use circle hooks with kids. They don't have to set the hook and only 1% of the fish we caught were gut hooked. Attachments ---------------- Allison's first fish compressed.jpg (4KB - 83 downloads)

Posts: 5874 | I love taking my kids with, and they both love going with their dad. Especially Lauren. She just loves going fishing. The best was the time we launched, and it was 18 degrees out. 5 fish later, we called it a morning, and headed for some hot chocolate!
