Do any of you guys with Tuffy 1890s have to hand maneuver the trailer into a tight spot in the garage? Wondering if lowering the swing jack to lowest position brings the rear wheels up enough to make the trailer somewhat maneuverable by hand. My third stall garage door wouldn't be wide enough to back in so I would have to go in thru the double door and swing the trailer to the third stall by hand. Wondering if this is do-able. I'd prefer the 1890 over the 1760 and also the safety/ride of a tandem trailer but my garage may be a limiting factor.

Thanks for any wisdom you can impart upon me.

Bob

I can push mine over to the side, with a little muscle, it helps to lower the front

Tandem trailers are notoriously hard to maneauver by hand. I would suggest against it if your going to be pulling that boat in and out of the garage on any type of a frequent basis.

If you've got room on either side of the door frame, what about putting a wider garage door in?? I'm just guessing here, but probably about a grand or so, maybe a tad more, to do that. Might be worth checking into if you're sold on the 1890.

I'll second what Theedz said about tandems being "typically" not all that friendly to hand manuevering. I have been storing a friends 620 in my shop since about June and I tried on several occassions to move it over by hand, couldn't get it done. Had to hook it to the truck or the garden tractor. On the other hand I can wheel my 618 any where I want to. Difference being primarily single vs. tandem. The weight of the 620 isn't the issue as I can pull/push it fwd/back all day long without a problem.

Those 1890's look awesome, I would sure try to figure out a way to make it work for you.

Thanks guys. That's about what I thought. Unfortunately putting in a 9ft door is out...no room without moving the wall and would need a lot line variance to do it :/

Bob,

One other thought here; talk to Steve Worrall and Steve Bendall (one of Fiberdomes owners) It is quite possible that they could get a single axle trailer made for you that would have an axle weight rating sufficient to support the 1890. Get it with a swing-tongue and your in business.

Previously to my current boat I ran a Ranger 690. 19' boat with a 175 EFI, 9.9 kicker 43 gallon fuel tank, etc. A big water boat by most musky fishers standards. It was on a single axle trailer, Ranger offered it both ways. I bought the rig used so I got what I got.

I never had an issue with that single axle trailer, tongue weight was fine, tracking was fine. The only thing I noticed is that the tires wore just slightly more on the outter edge of the tread. But the original tires went well over 40k miles and were in fair shape when I changed them. I was able to move that boat around just fine in the shop by hand.

Do some checking with Tuffy, nice thing about dealing with a smaller company is you just might be able to get the boat you want on a trailer that will work for you. The place that makes their trailers for them I'm sure could figure out the axle placement, it's not that hard to do. They already have single axle fenders for their other models. Trust me, this would be quite an easy fix to your situation.

Just keep working on it, you'll be much happier with the 1890 you want instead of compramising on the 1760 simply because of the trailer. 1760 is a nice boat but is quite small compared to the 1890.

Moreyes said it right, lower the tongue jack and the trailer can be moved by hand. Not as easy as a single, but not horrible, either.

How about a couple tire dollies .http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=32052 They even make some that dont require a jack .

do a search youll find em . They should allow you to move the trailer sideways providing your floor is pretty smooth.

Good luck

Just another option, I have room in my third stall but I park my 1890 in the double stall of my garage because it is easier to get it in and out and still put a car next to it, then I just park in the third stall. I think it works out just fine.

Try putting the tires on vizqueen(sp?), or 4 mil or thicker plastic sheets. Helps the tires slip so you can turn the trailer. Not real easy, but not impossible.

Some very good ideas there for me to mull over until the time comes. Both look like excellent boats and the 1760 would probably be just fine but with 2 boys growing up I'm thinking bigger might be better. Thanks again everybody.

GoJak makes a very interesting possible solution.

stylinconcepts.com was the first place I saw gojacks but toolrage.com has them alot cheaper. E-bay might be another option. I think you can get away with just a pair if you put one on the front wheel on one side and the other on the back wheel of the other side. Do a google search and see if you can find a used set. I have seen them on fishing websites awhile ago for $175 shipped- maybe bassboatcentral.com.

Buy a bag of mason sand and a bucket. Toss down some mason sand where you have to turn the boat and it will slide on the sand a lot easier than on concrete. When done, sweep up the sand, put it back in the bucket till next time.

I have the same problem with my 619. I'm going to try some of thesee ideas...lowering the front end and the plastic.

I'm also considering mounting a winch onto the studs at the proper angle and just 'cranking it over by tying a strap around the front of the trailer.

I have the same problem, third car door is too narrow for my tandem 620. I thought about the go-jacks but ended up parking her in the middle stall and flanking her with vehicles. Its not an ideal parking situation but this way I get the boat I want and its in the garage.

I used to own a single axle trailer on a 19ft boat. Never again. Sure its more maneuverable but its also not as safe as a tandem. Tandem's track much straighter and when you have a blow out you don't lose control of the vehicle and may not trash the wheel like you would on a single.

Quick follow up, has/did anyone use the Go-Jacks on a Tandem trailer and was it successful? Thanks. Wade

Tell the little Lady about the problem and suggest to her that the only solution is to buy a new 4- wheeler in order to back it in that tight space..... and that the new 4-wheeler also can double as the snow plow !!

Problem solved....... Isn't life grand!!

Top H2O,

Be careful putting to heavy a rig on a four-wheeler. Need to know what the tongue weight on the boat is before hooking it up, otherwise there goes your hitch on your four-wheeler, and this is coming from experience. Not the part about totally messing up my hitch but bending it severly, yes!

Oh, and to solve your problem, just build a separate garage with two garage doors, so you can just pull through and unhook the boat and shut the garage doors. That's my dream idea one day. LOL
