we could connect our smart-phones loaded with the navionics app to an external waterproof monitor and say good-bye to lowrance and hummingbird forever? inverter running off of the tm batteries and good to go.

I was wondering if that would be possible? How would you connect the smart phone to the moniter though?

I don't have a smart phone, but I'd love nothing more than to say goodbye to my lowrance...

Garmin has just released a smart phone with GPS. Don't know any details but sounds like what you are looking for John.

I could see using a smart phone for the GPS function, but to be completely 110% free from Lowrance/Humminbird what would you do for a transducer to show your depth, water temp and to help locate schools of bait?

You can buy just chartplotters cheap enough, but like others have said, what would you do for the sonar portion. Lots of good info on the sonar side....bottom hardness is one of them I would not want to be without.

the sonar is something that can and has been done with flashers and simple innexpensive units for years. the gps/map-chipping display and hardware seems to be the area the industry charges so much for inadequate equipment. i could see using an x-75/85 or flasher ... then bluetoothing my gps/map-function from my smartphone to a monitor for gps tracking etc...

essentially for $10.00 you can now have a 334c with the droid and the navionics app. the ONLY downside is that it's display is small ... maybe a waterproof i-pad on 3g is enough to knock these guys out of something they've failed with these past few years.

i'm thinking myself into a solution as we speak

I guess they even work in the weeds. I know, what a novel concept to have a depthfinder actually find the depth...

I believe the new Evo phone has a compact HDMI out, to be able to 'send' to a larger screen... that would work for most new electronic screens. Just have to find a waterproof monitor!

I use the Navionics app on my iphone all the time for ice fishing -- works great. What we need are monitors in our boats that run off a central CPU. The prices we pay right now for separate units is crazy. Think about it -- one CPU should cost maybe $1,000. 10.5" monitors shouldn't be more than a few hundred bucks a piece. Add a couple of transducers and a GPS receiver for a few hundred bucks more and you have a top of the line system in your boat for a total of $2,300. A Humminbird 1197 costs more than that alone.

This is what Lowrance should do to regain an edge over Humminbird.

Now the question is, how to get a constant 3G signal for the Ipad to update the navionics map in the middle of, say LOTW? I sure wish Apple would drop AT&T, and go to Verizon.

It's my understanding the latest versions of the Ipad have built in AGPS? Would this work while in remote locations without 3G or Wifi?

The i-phone has a scuba housing, so you could have a waterproof unit now...BR

You don't need a wireless signal for the ipad to work. It grabs a GPS signal just like the unit in your boat does, and the maps are stored on the unit's harddrive. It works anywhere. It's not quite as accurate as a 50 channel GPS receiver, but it's not bad either.

These phones are amazing! The ability to call up local radar to see if a storm is heading toward you may well be worth the extra $ even for weekend anglers. I recently saw a photo from a 3 month old Droid phone, and it was pretty good. It's nice to have a back up camera..especially one you can instantly taunt your friends with pics of your fish.

I just chatted with the sales guy at the Verizon store about this yesterday. He told me the new Droid X coming out soon has an HDMI port built in. So hooking your Droid with the navionics app to a large monitor may not be very far away. Now where does a guy get a waterproof flat screen monitor???

They make'em...they make outdoor TV's so the technology is there... I did a google search for waterproof monitor and quite a few hits came back.
