Hey Guy's,

I was out on the Madison Chain the other day with my buddy Matt Polman and we laid into 2 nice fish that day. Mine wasn't as big as his 37 1/2" but what was interesting is that as we got his in closer we noticed it looked pretty beat up from the spawn. As I went to net her I noticed something odd......She was BLIND! I can't say how that happened, but it was interesting to say the least. We were both using scent (Preditor of course!) We saw a few other boats out there but we were the only ones to boat any fish that afternoon/evening. It was about 7:30ish and the water was really cloudy. I know we have talked about this before, and some will disagree, but I definitely think the use of scent makes "scents".
I haven't gotten the pics from Matt yet, but I will post them as soon as I get them!!

Take care....Have a safe weekend!

Blind muskies...

The lateral line is still a factor and I am sure that assited in the catch.[;)]

Did it have sunglasses on?
Or maybe it was a fake so the bluegills would tease it thinking it was blind, but then SNAP!

Honestly, the lateral line had to do something in that case. Was the fish healthy? I guess because we rely on sight so much, we don't think about how most fish actually don't use their eyes as a main way of finding food.

Very interesting!

Sponge,

How do you keep her blind? Otherwise she would CPR'ed you by now don't you think?

Just looking for a few pointers.

... and how's Gary doing?

Karen - if you don't mind me asking, what lure did you catch that blind fish on? Lot's of vibration?

I have caught them with one bad eye, never with 2. A few years ago some kid got a 40"+ on a piece of chicken liver while fishing for catfish and that fish was blind in both eyes. Pretty cool experience and I am sure that scents woud play into the feeding of the blind muskies.Paul

Craig...Gary lost an antennae today...got jumped by a gang of snails...a real slug fest! To blind one(wife) requires cash, a visit by the stork + sedatives...give them just enough to function + try not to screw up too bad![;)]

Matt Polman got her. I think he was using a Shallow Raider...
I was using a small Jake, Lots of vibration......hee hee hee![;)]

Hey Sponge,
I'm sure it was your charm and wit that netted her!
I hope you are doing better. Take care guys, It's Race Day (I'm in Indy)......
Start your engines!

P.S. Hey Sponge, You gonna be in Eagle River(PMTT)? If so, stop by and say HI!

Sponge,

Well cash and sedatives aren't a problem but the not screwing up part is going to take some work - I fish for muskies remember!

Slugfest... you're killing me here.

I am not buying this one. The lateral line was main factor if not the only factor for the stike. I am going to dedicate my whole summer to proving (to myself) that scents dont mean bunk.

Although.... The instinctive conditioning behavior factor might come into play as it does in all creatures. When one sense is deleted or dampend the other senses become more acute.. Maybe the scent manufaturing companies should start blinding all the muskies??? (just kidding of course)

Thanks Karen, but to insure a semi state of blindness for sponge mam will require me to stay south for the summer![:(] Have fun at the race!
Craig, the screw ups are inevitable + they expect it...the trick is to have them feeling sorry for you even though it was your fault! Correctly done, you can screw up at will...try waiting 'til she comes in the house...then in a voice just loud enough to be heard start repeating "daggone...can't believe I did that"...she will ask you what is wrong...then w/ the saddest face possible slowly look up at her + in a quavering voice say "I screwed up...AGAIN!!!!"....then place your face in your hands + gently rock back + forth in the kitchen chair...she will put her arms on your shoulders + tell you everything is going to be ok + most likely not even ask you how you screwed up!!! Place you free hand on hers + tell her "thanks...I really needed to hear that"...BINGO dude, you're off the hook! Done in variety, this scene can be used a number of times, so start practicing now![:sun:]

Dude.....Why so harsh?? I wasn't saying scent was the "ONLY" reason for sticking the fish....I just thought it was interesting to those of us that have discussed this already! Has anyone else caught a fish that was visionally challenged? I do think it helped, but I believe the lateral line was the first to come into play!

Great story. I wonder if you can do laser correction surgery on a musky? Probably in california.

As I strolled through the woods that day, a thrashing sound literally stopped me in my tracks...as I honed in on the sound, I came upon that very fish...I said "are you ok"?...the fish replied "I can't see..no no no no no...I can't see!"...realizing this fish was quoting a Frank Zappa song, I rushed it back to the water, told it to stay there + ran to my truck... that "blind" fish is now touring the east coast under the name of "Blind Melon Musky"; w/ sun glasses he resembles an aquatic Ray Charles + can sing + play the piano like him too! All proceeds are being invested + will be directed to "Oh Say Can You See", a foundation dedicated to the eyesight restoration of pisces members in the continental U.S. + Canada...additional funds will be allocated to the sea turtle flipper replacement clinic in Sandbridge...give early...give often![:sun:]

Good one, Sponger! Reminds me of a story I heard the other day (well, it was on FOX, so who knows) about the 'lady' from Weakest Link bashing America for having a president so dumb that he was once seen waving his hand at Stevie Wonder. It DOES make you wonder. m[]

You want some help Karren?

Like I said' "The lateral line is still a factor and I am sure that assited in the catch".

Note "assisted", When one becomes blind other sences do infact inprove. If you yourself were blind, your hearing and smelling would inprove.

In dark water conditions this may happen to muskies that cant see that far. Maybe there sence of smell is better?

Thanks Jason.....[:p]
You Rule!!

Hey Guys,
Just so we are clear....IT WAS BLIND! The left eye was completely damaged (clouded) and the right eye had some cloudiness (60%), redish ulceration in/around it which affected the entire area. It appeared to be a more recent injury/disease...not sure. It had been caught and released several times. Some of the hook makrs in the jaw seemed fairly recent. I might assume it (right eye) was damaged due to a bone-head release.
I do have some pictures and I will bring them to Eagle River(PMTT) for those that want to see them. Matt said he would email them to me and if he does I will post them here for you to see. OK?
Take Care,
Karen

Karen,

I have always been a firm beliver that scent is not used for strike/feeding. It just doesnt click for me. All the research I have done in regards to strike/feeding behavior tells me that the sense of smell/taste is NOT a factor. The reason for this educated guess is that I can not come up with a good reason why they would use it for striking. In fact I think that if they were wired to use the sense of smell/taste for striking, it would hinder the muskie. I dont have time to explain this theory in full but. The short of it is... why would they be wired to use scent/taste for striking? I can see in my wildest dreams that a muskie MIGHT use smell/taste as a form of locating baitfish initially repeat initially (maybe). BUT..The use of scents by us is used to try and trigger strikes not for intial location stimulus(chuming if you will). I could be wrong dont get me wrong. This is IMHO for sure.

Why so harsh???? I dont think that I am being harsh at all...just honest and maybe just a little sarcastic.

That's what this board is here for.....I understand your view/opinion. Alot of people feel that way, others don't. I was also being sarcastic when I said "harsh". It's all good, and I hope you had a great weekend![;)]
