Posts: 123 Location: Bemidji, MN | Daiwa Luna 300 or Calcutta 400b Tell me which one you would pick to throw these big bucktails- double cowgirls, dc 10s, any big bucktails on 7'6''-8' rods. Pros and Cons, your opinions are appreciated. Thanks. I'm leaning towards to the Lunas but having second thoughts about the Calcuttas. I know there are other reels out there that would work well but I'm asking pros/cons, opinions on the two reels above.

If you're on more of a budget, check out the Okuma Induron or Red Isis. I havent used an Isis yet, but I've got one coming. The Induron is one of the nicest reels I have used at its price point (or almost any price point for that matter), and I'm sure the same will hold true for the Isis. The best part about Okuma for me is the customer Service. Mark Rogers is extrememly helpful and will go out of his way to make sure you are happy. You can also try a Garcia 7000. You can get any those 3 for right around $150 or less Edited by BALDY 4/29/2008 3:38 PM

Posts: 214 Location: Beaver County, Pennsylvania | it seems like with what you are suggesting you'd like to buy, you are looking to spend some loot. with that said, i have to suggest the Penn 975. it's a top dollar reel worth every penny and it will winch any size blade you can think to throw for musky.

I just never got the name and they seem to be nice reels. Thanks for the feedbacks guys I just looked at the penn reels, the 965 has a low gear ratio and lower price than the 975 and these would probably work well too. Posts: 1760 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | For burning big blades I would go 975. The 975 comes with the dual position handle and a spool that will hold more line. The larger spool allows the bait to maintain higher speed at the end of the cast since the diameter of the line remaining on the reel is larger than if a smaller reel were used. I do not know much about the Penn reels other than they are nearly impossible to destroy. From what I have found, few are unhappy with any Penn reels.

Posts: 89 | Hey Guys, I've used the Luna the last couple of years and hav'nt had a problem with pulling double 10's. But this year I'm getting a Penn 975 from Thorne Bros for throwing bigger lures and bucktails.

Posts: 311 | I threw a double 10 cowgirl for 2 days straight with the Luna and loved the smoothness of the reel. The only thing I did not like was the release bar that goes across the whole reel. I palm the reel and had that bar digging into my hand. The Calcutta reel has the smaller bar which makes palming the reel easier........

Posts: 531 Location: Hugo, MN | Penn 975 will outperform the calcutta and luna when using big bladed bucktails. It is geared better for them (4.5 to 1) and has a power handle. I got mine last summer and have no regrets. It made things so much easier than any other reel I tried. Get one, you won't be disappointed.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Another shot out to the 975. I tend to be a bit hard on reels and get chewed out by my reel repair guy quite often. I'm glad that I got turned onto the 975, as I am with much less issue than similar reels, some of which several folks here sometimes fall all over themselves in recomending. Now, the 975 is not as silky smooth as some of the other 'high end' Musky reels out there, but they get smoother as you own them, and very very strongly built, which means more to me than a reel that feels like butter for the first month, then turns into any other nameless model after a fair amount of usage.
