I am new to this sight - Have been seriously fishing Muskie's the last five years. This topics has probably been discussed before but it is always fun to remember the biggest. I have stuck around a dozen mid-forty inch fish (most from LOTW) but my biggest was a corn fed IA 48" casting a Super Shad rap last September. Looking to crack 50 this year and was interested to know lure, time of year, and any other information your willing to share about your personal best. (had you seen the fish follow before, caught on figure 8, moon patterns, ect.)

Hey Justin,
Welcome to the site, lots of good info here, and a ton of people to use as resources. You are right, this subject has been discussed here before, and even has its own spot in the research forum. I provided a link so you can see what many of the members personal best stats are.

Dude, a 48's a solid fish. Lotsa guys I know have been at it a lot longer than 5 yrs and are still waiting for one that size. I'm also new to M1st, so here goes:

-Sept 11, '04 (my sympathies to all my friends in the USA and the world over for this day and what unfolded)
-51.5x24, released.
-Georgian Bay, ONT
-10" bootail I tie. Orng/blk feathers, hot orange blade. (#7)
-Bulging at 7:30pm
-Rock pile with cabbage in about 9 feet, 69 feet of water over my outside shoulder.
-Three days of cloudless, hot, windless days leading up to the fish.
(12 hours later I missed about a 48-49 on a cisco Triple D about 5 miles from there. The fish were on.)

The fish hit about 3 cranks in, and missed, left a huge boil.

I go: 'honey look over...'

WHACK. She got it good 1/2 a crank later, before I could finish my sentence. The fish I missed the next day went left and the DDD went right, she got a good look at me, odd that I didn't get her on an O after, I threw a BullDawg for 10 minutes also. Mile high skies, real hot, no wind, about 10am.

It was 2001 on Halloween. It was warm for that time of year with temps near 40 degrees on Eagle Lake in Canada. I started off the day with a 38. Then I caught a 48 x 22 . I was twicthing a 9" Grandma in Tenn Shad. About two hours later I got a 51 x 25 on the same bait. Man, my legs were shaking. Then about an 1/2 later I had on another that I believe was bigger than the 51. I had it up to the surface and it was just splashing there with one hook in the corner of it's mouth. I tried reeling, but the fish wouldn't budge, the drag just slipped. Then the bait came flying out, skipping across the surface of the lake back at me. WOW! What a day! The next day, Nov 1st I got another that taped 46.

As long as there are people putting em back and your DNR does a good job of stocking, no reason why that pond can't rival any lake in my northern wi area. They may have a brain the size of a pea but they may get a little more shy as time marches on though............:)

I average 2 fish a day in the boat on LOTW over 28 days last four years but put 5 in the boat with over 35 days on the water in IA last year But Spirit does have big fish and east Okiboji is definately underfished - Think N. Wisconsin might be better ?

I need to get back on Okoboji again, haven't been there for a couple seasons. It's where I really began this chase over ten years ago. Am I misunderstanding you or have you really put 56 muskies in the boat in four weeks of fishing LOTW. I spend most of my time there, but those numbers would be outstanding. What section do you fish?

The 54 inch monster on the left, caught trolling in November 2002 under perfect weather conditions during last light on the day of the full moon. 52 inch giant caught the next morning, so my two biggest muskies caught within 24 hours on the same lure.

Well I'll talk carp, though that's not what was really asked. I add it not as typical occassional rambling, but in the spirit of "Family First", a long held value of the board. Ok,

During the early summer I spotted a school of carp holding in structure in the river that runs right past my office. Only our agency has access, and access was a short, overgrown hill leading to a small (20'x20') muddy flat.

After work one evening I chopped an access to the flat and catsed out my bit of choice, a 12' leader with a sliding weight and a #14 treble tipped with 3 kernals of canned corn. Fish on in 1 minute. Fish off in 1.1 minute, broke the leader. So I used 18# flouro with another treble. Fish on in 2 minutes, off in 2.2 minutes - broke the leader again. No snags, just the run of the fish both times. Ok, the hell with this right, so, 24" of leader made of the same line I was using on the rod (my jig rod, a custom pole w/ cute little 4600 and 30# PowerPro). This time a single steelhead hook and 3 more kernals. Fish on in 2 minutes, off in 2.5 minutes. Straightened out the steelhead hook. Ok, same leader, # 14 3X mustad treble I happened to have on hand. Fih landed, about 12 pounds. Next 3 were all betwreen 10 and 18#, I'm guessing. All in 20 minutes, beastly runs, these fish are like trains. They're in for the long fight, running the river channel away from you. I learned to use my thumb as the initial drag until felt the fish tire, then powerd them in, still fighting. Tough as a dozen wimpy walleyes.

Ok, following Saturday I take my 12 year old daughter and she catches 3 fish, a 10# a 15# and a 25#. It took her 15 minutes to bring the 25 in; on the other side of the river 4 cars stopped to witness the battle. They cheered when I netted her fish. The best fishing day of her life, lots of action and weight. Setting the muskies aside for a few hours was so very worth it. Look in my photo archive for pics.

Ok, I'm done. Thanks for considering.

My best is a 52" out of season fish.:)
Caught her walleye fishing with my son in Pike bay of lake Vermilion, May 15th 2003.
Caught her on a medium light, 8ft trolling rod with 8# mono, on a firetiger thunderstick.

Hey Fishwizard,

I’m willing to bet that you could put two fish a day in the boat too if you could lay off the Tropicana Twisters. It’s tough to throw a lure when you’re doubled over laughing all the time. Besides that, you probably don’t get out on the water all that much seeing how you work under some of the most ruthless conditions I’ve ever witnessed.

4 months ‘til opener, weeks until the Lake Trout extravaganza. Have fun!

45"er on LOTW at the fall outing with MuskieFirst in '03. Caught her on a Red Perch 9' Sledge off a 15yd. long saddle between 2 large rocks about 2 miles north of Cedar Island, thanks to TECK who put on a 10 fish in 6 days adventure that I'll NEVER forget. Hooked one that pulled MUCH harder but never saw that fish on the outing this past year. That one hit on the back side of Blueberry Island.
Thanks again TECK

I got my biggest by length was from eagle lake in early aug. on a jackpot. She was 52.5"x23, I had worked for acouple of days before getting her to go. The scary thing is that every time I saw her I saw another fish on a spot with in a 1/4mile that made her look small. The other fish came up behind that same jackpot the 2nd cast when I pulled up to the other spot and I was shaking so bad from the last fish that I just kept the bait moving instead of messing with her. She sunk under the boat.
My bigest by wieght is a 51x26 I caught in late november out of Lake Erie on a hooker. she was 42 to 44 pounds on a boga. I need to get one bigger than these two this year.

Parker,
Hey was that winter green mist on that 619 that just went by? Those tropicanna's sure are good though, huh? How are the smallies treating you? I found a couple outstanding smallie lakes well south of the border this fall. Let me know when you and Ryan want to get back up there, I think the bobber has some room in the back. My tour of duty days are mostly behind me.

Ryan
