Posts: 146 Location: Alsip, IL | Hey guys looking for some of your opinions on these bondy baits. I'm a big bulldawg guy and really do have a lot of faith in plastics but I've never used a bondy bait and I keep reading fantastic things about em. My cottage is in the UP where a good deal of my musky fishing is done, but I've been fishing Illinois and southwest MI a lot this year and have a hot lake that has been producing 40 to 44" fish like crazy so I wana try some confidence building with these things. Heading out there the 9th and 10th. Here's my thing seems like everything I read about bondy baits has to do with very large bodies of water as well as deep and clear. This lake I'm fishing was stocked heavily in the 80's and has a wonderful population but its a small lake (300 acres or so) and tops out at 24 feet with most of it being 8 ft and weeds. Now all through September and October fish were crushing double 10's around the one deep bowl in the lake. Bucktail action has really slowed and I can't seem to find them. Ya think that bondy bait will produce? Never tried it , and personally I think they look a little dumb but hey if it'll produce I'll go buy 10 and jig my heart out. Any opinions help guys thanks.

Posts: 1080 | If it's in the water, and it moves: it's food. The fish will tell you what they want. Bulldawgs one day, doube-10's the next. Maybe they'd prefer the larger vibration of the Fuzzy-Duzzit one day vs the more softer, subtle vibration of the Bondy Bait the next. All you can do it is try it and see. They catch fish. Plain and simple. Edited by MACK 11/1/2013 1:49 PM

You don't have to just straight jig them... Cast and retrieve with a pumping motion just like a dawg. I would go a bit slower than a typical dawg retrieve. You are trying to cover different depths in the column by doing this. Big lift, let it fall and reel.... Grab a Bondy Hot Orba while you're at it. Roll that along the 8' edge. I like that bait. My problem with bucktails is (for me at least) they are 1-2' lures at best. If the fish arn't willing to come up for them, they arn't getting eaten. I know you can slow roll them but I don't. If I'm looking to fish 4+ feet down its going to be a different bait.

Location: Contrarian Island | I started jigging bondys 3-4 yrs ago in Vilas and have had quite a bit of success for the time they have been in the water... muskies and some big eyes to 26"... and i was fishing them on a 200 acre cisco based lake ... they work! Posts: 146 Location: Alsip, IL | Bucktails being a1 to 2 ft lure I used to feel the same way until I tried the #10 vibrax from blue fox. Always figured them to be a low end cheap brand, but I picked a few up for $6 a piece and have had fantastic results. They run deep, even moved at a good clip. Was in 14 ft casting to 20 ft and got 4 in one stretch a couple weeks ago. My new favorite tail for deep fish. Though 2 or 3 skis and they are trashed.

They were designed for deep water jigging heavy current. But a little imagination is all it takes to make any bait versatile. Another retrieve I like with these is short little pitches and let it fall on a tight line and hop/jig back to the boat. And then dance it around under the boat for a few secs. Repeat.

Posts: 171 | The Bondy bait is a pretty realistic artificial fish. I love baits that look like fish and so do Muskies

Posts: 719 | Thanks guys....the baits work everywhere except the slop!... I get alot of pics sent in from small waters where guys finally started to fish deep for various reasons and are pleased with what they find. Just takes a bit of confidence, and you don't need 10 baits, maybe just a couple. Thanks again, Jon

Posts: 146 Location: Alsip, IL | Well I'm sold just ordered 4. Hopefully I'll pick one or two fat fall girls up next week. I have been trying this whole deep water thing more and more. Getting out of my numbers phase and getting more into seeking larger fish. Cant seem to break 50" but I've gotten close. Soon its all gotta pay off. Those lakes in the UP can be stingy though

Posts: 122 Location: Appleton Wi | Last week I casted the magnum bondy bait in a really small lake in Wisconsin and in about 30 min had two nice fish follow on it. Clear water turned away at the boat great presentation to jig or cast to get in deep break lines. Good Luck!

Posts: 1405 Location: Detroit River | I mainly fish Bondys on the DR but have used them on a small 175 acre northern Michigan lake. I casted them along a steep drop & let it sink to the bottom (20 fow) then pumped it back to the boat & was rewarded with a 46". I do find the casting hookups aren't that good compared to jigging.

As the fall wears on and where multiple lines are legal, another productive approach is to vertically jig while drifting live bait on steep and/or secondary breaks. In lakes where the forage (panfish, perch, whatever) moves shallow at first ice, the muskies will stage off of these areas on that deep break and this tactic can be deadly. Keep the baits within a foot of the bottom and allow the jig to make contact with the bottom now and then on the drop. The movement and vibration will bring fish in, if nothing more than to see your baits. Think of it like the decoys guys jig while sturgeon spearing. It's more fun to get them on the jig, but like most guys, I'll take what I can get. Have fun.

Posts: 1168 | If you ice fish and want to have some fun get yourself a stout enough set up and jig for pike with bondys. It's pretty cool on the aqua-vu seeing the way they'll call in multiple pike that are over 30 inches in at the same time, even in water that is less than 10feet deep. Bondys and Fuzzy Duzzits accounted for around 20 pike between 30 and 38 inches last winter. Small lake, shallow water....cool stuff.

That is great! Are you using the full size or the junior one?

Posts: 1168 | Full sized bondy. It's a simple set up. I just took a beefier rod (more like a walleye ice rod) with a spinning reel. Slapped some used 80lb power pro on it, a 100# flouro leader and voila. Started jigging with 1ounce rattle baits with the same setup and thought "hmmm, if they are called in by those things let's experiment a little bit with other baits." With line that heavy you have leverage against the fish but it's still a blast tussling with a three foot pike on a short rod inside of a portable ice shack.

They are very effective on certain days. Too bad they didn't catch on. The bait can wear you out but I've caught just about every fish that swims in LSC on them (lots of pike & big LMB).
