| Thinking about buying a tablet for use as a GPS. I could download a Navionics App. and use it for ice fishing as well. Wondering what everyone thinks the pro's and con's would be. I realize they are not waterproof but if I drop it in the lake it would be my own fault. |

Location: NorthCentral WI | Even after downloading the maps on the Navionics app, doesn't a tablet still need Wi-fi while on the lake to aquire satellites? Or would it work more like a Lowrance unit with internal GPS, that connects on it's own? This is the biggest question I have regarding the use of the app. Otherwise a tablet may be hard to beat. You can get a large screen for a low price... |

Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | Why not just get a smart phone? or Download the app on your current smart phone? I have it on mine, why spend extra money on a tablet if that is all you are going to use it for. Get smart phone. App is $10 one time fee. Then you know that you don't have to pay extra attention to not dropping a tablet in the water. You already know that you are going to need your cell and you ALWAYS know where that is at.
This is what I do for ice fishing, works great!!! Helped me find a few of my favorite crappie and pike spots through the ice last year |

Location: Detroit River | A cell phone app is a better choice IMO & you can use the money you save to buy more musky lures. Plus cold weather might be an issue for the tablet. |

Location: Kansas City BBQ Capitol of the world | Good info. I have the Galaxy S3 with the new Jelly Bean update on it and the phone flat out rocks with Google Now! Super fast and smooth. Gonna follow Fat-Ski on this one and download the app.

| Is it waterproof? I would imagine moisture would be your first enemy here. After that getting the thing cold or too hot. Great idea though, especially if you can get it to talk to the sonar transducer. Current non-modular electronics are such a racket... |

| Just tried again to search for navionics and wouldn't even shown up in my Google play store on the nexus 7... Same search on my galaxy nexus phone and had results for several navionic apps. With in my play store I can see all of the apps I have ever downloaded and once I click on marine north and south it tells me it isn't compatible. |

| That's the problem with Droids, same platform doesn't always work the same on so many different devices. I have a Droid phone and it initially wouldn't download, but they upgraded a month later and I was able to get it on my phone. Navionics is a great app, but I agree with the concerns about water/moisture, as well as overheating in the sun. If you could get a waterproof case and somehow keep it in the shade it should work just fine. Maybe build a box for it for shade and that has a holder that swivels and rotates?
I am in a similar situation with needing a protable gps/fishfinder. Check out this link and it may give you some ideas for a setup for a tablet.

Location: Davenport, IA | Newest Nexus devices run on android 4.1 or 4.2. I would guess navionics is not yet compatible beyond 4.0. It works fine on my Motorola Phone and Asus Tablet, both running android 4.0. |

Location: Kansas City BBQ Capitol of the world | The Jelly Bean on my SG3 is 4.1.1. and works with Navionics. The 4.2.1 just started is rolling out for the Nexus 7 this month so it may be an issue with the 4.2.1.
