I am looking for some shallow rubber to be used on inside weedlines. Anyone have any recommendations or advice? Those custom color Curly Sues are pretty sweet, anyone know if there are shallow Curly Sues. Thanks

Andy does make shallow Curly Sues. I think if you order from his site you just select "shallow" in a drop down menu. I haven't used them, but I have heard good things from those who have. I saw a video where an 11" one was being straight retreived like a surface bait, and it made a surprising commotion on the surface. Sounds like they do a good job of being worked like a shallow (under the surface) soft plastic too. I would give them a shot!

I love Andy's baits and will continue to use them, including his shallow Sues. One thing I noticed about the shallow version of his Curly Sues is they run REALLY shallow if you use the same rhythm as a normal Sue. In other words, you will have to fish them much slower... UNLESS you add a bell sinker (your choice of size) to the front hook hanger to keep the front of the bait down (they ride nose up a bit). This was how I fixed this issue and still fish them "fast."

You could give big joes a try. www.liveactionlures.com

I was going to pick up a Big Joe or two at the show tomorrow, but don't they run pretty deep?

Give a Hardhead a try from H2O tackle! Run it with no weight and tail up for inside the weedlines. Start reeling as soon as it hits the water with the rod tip up to get the tail “gurguling” on the surface for a topwater style if you want. If you decide to run the deep weedline just turn the tail down and add some weight. Very versatile rubber bait with a better hook-up ratio than other rubber baits due to the hard front section. Much better durability also!

Otherwise as mentioned try a Big Joe. Most people think they are for deep water only, but they can work wonders shallow as well. You’ll have to reel faster, and keep your rod tip up. Give it some quick hops while reeling and you will be able to fish it shallow.

Another vote for the hardhead. Got to throw them last year, and I picked up a bunch more for this year. Great hooking bait, and like Travis mentioned, very versitile. Pick up one of Jomusky's weight sets and you can fish everything from super shallow to deep breakline and deep structure fish.

I'd say big joe and a curly sue. Both baits are very tough.

You can use them deep or somewhat shallow. I've used them by casting out and letting it hit bottom with a long pause in between in shallower water. Or leave your rod tip high and let the reel do the work.

Thanks wers. They sound pretty versatile. I will be getting a Hardhead if they have them at the show too. Heard a lot of good things about them.

H20 Tackle makes the Hardhead.

http://www.h2otackle.com/

Bulldagws are good, Curly Sues are good, Super D's are good. The Hardhead just has it all. Tail up for a slower drop and a great wobble on the retrieve, tail down for a faster drop straight retrieve, and then you have two weight inserts so that you can play with various weighting options. Throw on top of that you can simply unscrew a tail, and screw on another color tail for all kinds of color combos and quick tail replacement if the tail gets shredded!

I fished Mag. Bulldawgs for over 10 years. This is just a better fish trap in my opinion.

Or there is the tyrant. Supposed to be out this month sometime, if I'm not mistaken. Has the interchangable tail as well.

Oh yeah! That Tyrant looks like a good shallow water bait. I think it can be fished a little deeper, but it looks like it runs at typical jerkbait depth to me. Looked really nice in the video I watched.

Tyrant looks like it will be a sweet bait! That tail looks rock solid. Will be interesting to see how many toothy hits it can take. Nice design for sure!

Hey James,

Any idea on whether you will be making a shallow version of the Super D's??
