I will for the sake of it call this fish a mid to upper 30# class fish.I talked to steve heiting and he agrees and says the fish is in the mid to upper 30#'s.I got 27" and 28" on the girth measurement in middle of the fish. The release shot below show the buldge in the back of the fish.

What do you think it weighs?

Can't really tell what the "buldge" is, but it looks "not normal" and maybe some some sort of defect or growth...

I would say that is not a "true" 27-28 inch girth fish.

Nice fish for sure no doubt, but with that abnormal growth or "buldge" it throws off the real girth. I would say it has 23 inch girth or so.

You can't really tell from the pics because the aspect ratio is definitely off on both of them.

E,

when resizing pictures LOCK THE ASPECT RATIO.
repeatedly posting messed-about pictures like that makes it hard to believe any of them, which is a shame because you're obviously catching some decent fish that can stand on their own without photoshop "help".

here on MuskieFirst we also try to keep things polite, especially when the somewhat touchy subject of estimating fish sizes from pictures comes up.
but 27" or 28" girth? accurate girth measurements are tough at best, and very subjective, but that's probably more than just a bit generous.

If you wanna see a legit 27" girth, check out my buddy's fish on Outdoors Weekly's website. Search for "Bob Ford" in the reader pics archives. Helluva fish though!

I really don't think it's ego or lacking things in other areas. This person is curious about the weight of his musky, inquired to Steve Heiting, and is asking others for their opinions.

While this musky is indeed a good enough fish that everybody would want on the end of their line, it doesn't have this big of a girth and does not weigh in the upper 30 pound range even though I do not know what it weighs.

To me, weight is more important than length and girth and is why I carry 2 certified Chatillion scales in my boat at all times.

When the musky is in the net in the water, you compress the net bag at mid way and hook the Chatillon hook through the north and south net squares and then you can lift up far enough to extract the musky in a horizontal manner out of the water and not raise the net hoop or pole from the boat rails at all.

You then have your certified weight and your own piece of mind. Simple as that.

MuskieE, that's a nice solid fish. Congratulations on your recent catches! That fish looks very similar to the many mid twenty pound fish photos that I've had sent to me. This is the time of year to cach a pig! Go get 'em!

Now the photo of Mr. Fords fish is a real dandy and looks to be the girth that it is said to be. I just don't see that girth in the pictures you put up E, sorry if it upsets you but maybe you have a better photo of it.

The day i got my chatillion scale was the day the guessing game was over......no more length by girth stuff..with all the time spent to get a decent fish wouldn't you want to know how much it actually weighed? .. ....these fish are like people..some fish have big bellies with skinny heads and tails while others are thick all the way through....with all the money we all spend chasing these fish what's another $120....just lift the fish in the net and then subtract the weight of the fish...also, i've boated one fish with a 27" girth and a couple that were close and they're so fat and sloppy that it's hard to even hold them up....
