Shopping boats pretty hard and this is what I am looking at right now price wise, do you guys know any good deals out there? I am willing to drive for $ but I have a trader and would just as soon buy down here. I haven't made any offers yet, but close LOL my throttle hand is itchy!!
Feel the need to go with 4 stroke technology.
One dealer I talked to said the projected life on a 4 stroke is 5,000 hours as opposed to 500 on a 2 stroke, ? I don't know if he meant life expectancy or maintainence avoidance? But the fuel savings and resale should make up for the extra bucks initially.
Looks like the initial bucks are around the $2000 area.
here is some info
90 4 stroke vs 90 2 stroke $2000 extra for 4
115 4 stroke vs 115 2 about $1600 extra for 4
90 vs 115 add about $800 to go up the 25 extra horses
weights for the merc 75, 90, and 115 4 stroke are all 386 pounds, opposed to 305 and 348 for the 2 strokes(weight goes up for the 115)
boat prices roughly that I have been quoted:
Lund Mr Pike 17 with 115(4) 18,400 no electronics
Lund Mr Pike 16 with 90(4) 16,800 no electronics
Lund 1675 explorer, 14,900 no electronics
Fisher 16 deep v with 90 15,900 fully equipped
Fisher 17 deep v with 115 16,900 fully equipped
Ranger 217 with 90 18,250 fully equipped
Ranger 218 with 115 20,110 fully equipped
Bass Pro Targa 17 with 90 fully equipped 17,700
Bass Pro Pro Deep V 17 with 90 fully equipped 16,700
Looking at them all I have already eliminated the Fisher Boats simply for the layout in the boat, otherwise if not casting out of them the set up looks very clean and nice lines, but casting it looks like Jason Smith wouldn't be able to see over the sides
The Targa goes out for the same reason, the deep v set up
The Ranger is well built but too far off the mark cash wise, the dealer was surprised he was that far off, second problem is a 8 week wait for delivery, too bad, has some nice features and they equip them pretty well for a standard package
Like the pikes but ummm don't care for the prices, the explorer more reasonable and still has a nice layout. they could all use some rearranging of storage space and if you ever needed to resesutate a fish- no livewell space.
The pro 17 from bass tracker is likeable for the layout, but bass tracker for some reason always thinks in terms of fishing for smaller fish.
Big gripe with tracker and lunds were trailers adding unneccassary footage for garage storage, a real sore point with our garage(and my wife)!! A little design and maybe $50 would make life much easier. they extend trailer an extra 2 feet that could be made as a break away, why? oh why do they do this? probably the why spend a dime to do it right when we can crap it thru for a nickle? philosophy at work....
Are these prices in line with what you guys are seeing and do I need to go call or see some dealers up north?
thanks
Firstsixfeet, had a technical problem posting this.[] |

| Interesting post for folks lookin to buy an new boat this season
Last year I purchased a new boat & Motor after doing a lot of research and just plain looking I choose a Lund Mr Pike 16 W Merc 90 4-stroke, the pricing that Jason listed is very close to what most dealers were asking (NOTE: I said asking) in many cases you will be able to negotiate with the dealer for some add-ons or upgrades for example I got Larger Tires and a removeable tounge for the trailer and a Mooring cover for the boat plus some other goodies whats the worst that can happen the dealer may say no or only agree to part of your requests but it's worth a try. Back to Boats, The Boat & Motor I purchased operated perfectly it's first season I have taken the boat out on some big water and even the fox chain and felt perfectly safe. The only thing I don't like about the Motor is that it does not have the best hole shot but then I am not out to set any speed records either other than that this motor is sweet quiet, clean and has the power to push the Boat w/ 4 people up to 40 MPH.
If you would like to take a closer look at my rig I will be Fishing the Muskies Inc. Tourny in april

| I've been looking hard at boats also. I don't want to afford what I really want this year, so I set me sights a little lower. IF, and I do mean IF, I buy a boat this year, it's probably going to be a Lund 1700 Angler SS, 115 Merc 4-stroke, Eagle Custom Trailer with Brakes, Removeable tongue. Quoted price $18,400.
Same boat with a 125 Merc, and Shorelander trailer is $15,600.
I like the layout of the Angler better than the Mr. Pike. Actually, it is last years, 2001, Mr. Pike. This year, the Pike went to the Pro V style gunnels, and vertical rod lockers.
Went to three dealers, and prices varied from 18,400 to 19,100. Rigged and ready.
If I decide not to pull the trigger this year, I'm just going to get a new bowmount for my Tuffy Walleye Rampage. That is, if I don't sell it first.
Tight lines,

| Geez, Shep, your post has really pi**ed me off!!! I had this whole discussion about the dang trailer on the three potential(Lund) targets I had picked out and dealer says, well Lund doesn't offer a trailer and these are custom made and that's how they come. They stick out 2 feet beyond the front of the boat and really eat room. I looked at the design and noted a LOT of wasted steel which seemed odd when you think of how many industrial designers live in the USA, LOL. If these guys had that price with a breakaway trailer neck it would be getting fitted and headed for my garage right now. Chumps, dullards!!!!!
These guys have been in the boat business for a while and should understand customer needs better. Of course I have the same gripe about the Pro V from bass tracker and they have already got breakaway trailer tongues and they DON'T HAVE IT for the model I want.
Ticks me off.............!!! |

| NOTE: THIS POST IS FROM, FirstSixFeet.
He posted it by mistake in the Pro's prospectives and I moved it for him. But thanks for all the emails everyone. I think I will stay with my glass boat. LOL[]

| FSF,
What trailers were they offering? While it is true, Lund does not have it's own trailer, in reality, none of the boat builders really do. Ranger and Tracker do, but not to many more do. TufTrail is not made by Tuffy, Triton's is a custom EZ Loader, C-Liners now are made by Eagle, etc.
Price for this boat with an Eagle Spirit trailer with removeable tongue, $17,900. The Eagle swing/Removeable tongue cuts almost 2 feet off the length.
Hope this helps.
Shep
Jason, you should stick with what you have. It's a GREAT boat! I just don't want to afford that much. Too bad you can't find a glass boat in the same range as what I'm looking at.[:(] |

| Jason are you looking for a boat? If it's a lund look at the 1800 explorer. A bigger version of the 1675, 95" beam and two 8ft rod boxes and battery storage in the floor. We priced one with a 125 merc, 2 lowrance x-91's, deluxe package and trailer, onboard battery charger, minnkota maxxim 74lb. motor, batteries, out the door 19k. I think it could be had cheaper. |

| Rapid Sport Marine in Ham Lake had the 1800 explorer at the boat show for 13,800 with a 115 merc, and a 55 lbs thrust bow mount. I forgot to grab their flyer, but will try to post a few prices over the weekend. I think they also had a 20' Alaskan with 115 Merc, and 55 lbs thrust trolling motor for 14,300. 89" beam, and 20' long, sounds good to me.

| [:praise:] Todd, I, too, was taken aback when I first read the post. Jason looking for a new boat? And a tin one, to boot? Tell me ain't so![:0]
Then I read it again, and I finally noticed this was reposted, BY Jason, for first6feet! LOL. It really had me going for a bit.[:praise:]
Thought I'd help clear this up, Jason.

| FSF,
I went through your exact situation the past two years. Researched the crap out of aluminum boats... and ended up going with glass and a 4-stroke.
But, I will pass along what I learned during my research and experiences. Bottom line, had I gone with aluminum my choice would have been the Crestliner Fishawk for value and performance. My dad runs a 1650 with a 90 Honda 4-Stroke... and it is a nice rig... but I feel the shorter hull and WIDE transom makes the boat a little light in the bow... which is a problem when cutting boat wakes, cross cutting larger waves, etc. It also requires you to constantly be trimming the motor to keep your bow under control. Based on that info.... I would NOT shorten your hull just to save a few bucks. The 17 footer with a 115 4-stroke should be perfect. These new wide transom designs make some FAST planing boats that are a real treat to fish from... but I feel they are a rougher ride a little less maneuverable. Based on that experience, if you are trying to get down to the $16K range... I'd give up the 4-stroke and stay with the longer hull.
The lunds are nice too, but unless you find a good deal... will cost you a touch more. They are virtually the same hull (except rivets vs. welded) as the crestliner. After fishing from the Crestliner for a few years, and sitting in dozens and dozens of Lunds on the showroom floor... I feel the Crestliner has the better MUSKY floorplan and layout. Same goes for the Ranger Cherokees. The Alumacraft Tournament series are a little deep and the extremely wide gunnels just are not musky friendly in my opinion. As for Tracker... no comment.
Good Luck! It is a tough decision... but for $18K you can get yourself a VERY nice rig... no matter what brand you end up with. It will come down to the little details that fit YOUR specific needs that will make your final decision. Not something anyone on the message board can help you with. |

| Lance I read your post with interest, where exactly are you talking about for this dealer?
And I could not find any Lund that was listed as an 1800 explorer is that new?
Please also note that the 5000 vs 500 reference above should be changed to spark plug life expectancy. I have a whole bunch of notes and finally found the one with the reference dealer had made to the 4 stroke.
Jason L I appreciate your info too although I was more looking for what people could tell me about prices than help me in picking a boat. The crestliner sounds like a good one, and looks good on the info I have pulled up on the net, but I have not ever seen one to compare. If I can save a $1000 on the ones I am looking at or more, I wanna go there! What worries me is spending a grand or so more than I have to and still putting another $1500 into it post purchase for fittings(and it may be more than that, I haven't run those down to the nub yet, and unfortunately there are some that don't have a competitive bidder to bring the price down).
Ahh the perfect boat. I haven't seen it yet.
Everything one gains it seems to lose somewher else. My kids would much rather kneeboard and tube than musky fish. My wife would much rather tan than musky fish. Maybe I should pick a boat good for those things??[:halo:]
Naaaaaaaaawwwwwwwww!!!![] |

| Whew.....my heart is beating again...thought for a minute Jason had been playing with the toaster in the bathtub again...[]
Shep...?????? Thought you were looking for another glass rig?? Have Worrall find you a good used one.
FSF,
Personally I would look hard at Crestliner, they have a welded hull (no rivits to leak) and a 20 yr. warranty. Yesterday at Holman Marine (north of LX) I stopped in to look for a used 4 stroke 25hp and saw them selling a NEW Crestiliner 1750 fishhawk dual console with 90hp Yamaha for $13,750-13,995 don't remember which. Was a damn nice looking rig and if I wasn't a Tuffy/fiberglass guy I would be hard pressed to not give that rig serious consideration.
I tell you what it sparked my curiosity to the point I took a brochure to check out the specks.... my old neighbor bought one and was very happy with it.
Good luck,
Mark

| Hey Mark. I was/am looking for another glass boat. Problem is, they are all just too damn expensive it seems. Actually, the problem is the wife. She found out how much more for a glass boat, and put the kibosh on it. Really had my heart set on another Tuffy, but I just can't get the price down low enough where I can pull the trigger. Might aim it at my head, and then pull it. LOL
You got your new rig yet? See you at the Cave with it? The pourous one says he's got a Payday and a Coke for me to mess the inside up.[:praise:]
Talk with you soon! 2 weeks!!! Gonna go sloooooooowwwwwww.

| Shep,
I understand the $$$ thing. I listed my 2001 with the intentions of buying Worralls 1760 consol rig but things are way slow at work and we bought a different house last fall. I am being conservative with finances, I bought Cory Painters Magnum, I'll run it this season for sure and then make a decision from there.
I know what your talking about with price tags, the quality of Tuffy comes at a price with the bigger rigs and quite frakly I'm trying to see how/if I can afford to move up to a bigger rig. I only guide 10-15 times per season so depreciating it on the business isn't likely..
I am not signed up to go to the Cave but it is driving me nuts and I just may show up anyway and sleep in my truck.
I don't think any of the outtings will be as good as this one as it is the first and allot of guys are fired up about it...
Have a great trip, check out the Crestliners if your thinking tin, you might like what you see.
Take Care,
Mark |

When the home page comes up, it will say "Click here to see our mid year additions."
Click on that, and a page will come up that will link you to the boat. On the next page, there will be a short description of the boat and a small picture. Under the picture, it will say, "Click here to view the p.d.f.
Click on that, and it will give a better description and better pictures.
