Some people "disagree" with the idea of using scent. I'm a big fan of it's use and have used it for years with great results. I'm not saying it's the sole reason for triggering a strike, but it does give a more realistic presentation of your lure. They have a great olfactory sense(smell) and as they move in to evaluate it it passes through the mouth and over the gills they then taste it. I find it's just the thing to convince them what they are chasing is indeed food. Keep in mind that it is a combination of senses that trigger the strike(lateral line, visual ID and smell/taste).
Shad are part of their diet and they will respond to it!
Put it on EVERYTHING!! For hard baits, I'll put some on the night before and let it dry on, so it's sticky[;)] .
I also rub a little on the leader/line. Watch out for bucktail hair....it will mess-up the natural flow of the hair.
Jlong refered me to an interesting article on the subject. It's written by Dr. Bruno Broughton and is titled "Sweet Smells Of Success". He writes for anglersnet.co.uk
Check it out! I would also recommend Esox Research Company web site for more articles/biology on the subject.
I hope this was helpful. Let me know how it works for you, OK? |
