Subject: Conservation measures

Hi guys
In the UK some of us are getting worried about the general decline in our northern pike stocks. Now I appreciate we aern't talking exactly the same fish here but I gather you "have never had it so good" Muskie wise in the States.
I was hoping that you good give me some idea into how this upturn happend. Catch and release I understand but what measures did your official bodies take that actually helped. Did stocking help and how did you ensure adequate food supplies for the fish?
I think you get my drift by now.
Any thoughts would be gratefuly received and you could end up helping too save a British northern or
two.
thanks and regards
Jeremy Airey

Probably the single largest factor is the Catch, Photo, release ethic here. Muskies Inc started promoting CPR in the late 70's and early 80's, and through very hard work and time, Muskie anglers have adopted the idea wholesale.

Some areas of Canada are managing the Pike population for trophy class fish by placing a smaller possession limit of 4 total, and adding a slot. Pike under 27.5 inches can be kept, and only ONE of the possession limit may be over about 36". No fish between 27.5" and 36" maybe harvested. This is fairly new law, but it is REALLY working on the Ontario waters I fish.

Do you know of Alan Broderick from Ireland?
I know he has been trying to get the locals to stop killing Pike out of hand everytime one is caught. Maybe he can assist you as well.
