I am looking for a rod for cold weather that will survive both casting and trolling without worrying about breakage.

Fiberglass?... any recommendations?

I would think the st croix glass/graphite rods would work. They make it in an 8fter too. I have a 7'6"er I use for both applicarions. Not sure what they are called not but it is the old catfish series rods re-named.
