| Hello all, I've been lurking here for several months now, and really appreciate the free sharing of muskie savy. I have been afflicted with the muskie bug relatively recently, so collecting information on gear and baits is a premium for me so as to not waste money in my limited arsenal. You have already been very helpful. I am curious whether anyone here can comment on gliders or other baits that are built and sold on ebay by Supermuskie? I like the appearance and construction (as far as I can see) of his baits, and prices seem really reasonable. Anyone use them? I think he's out of Illinois. All comments appreciated. | Hi all, I got two baits from SuperMuskie in the mail last week to satisfy my curiosity. One was an 8" glider, the other a 2 oz white and grey marabou inline spinner. I figured that I might as well post an initial review of the baits. This was not an extensive workout that I ran them through, but only a couple minutes of casting down on the bay (high turbidity, so I couldn't see very far under the water). I'll have to wait until next spring to fish them extensively. First, the glider. I was first impressed by the paint job on the bait. I really can't describe it well, and I'm not sure if the photos I hope to attach are going to turn out, but it really gives the impression of multiple dimensions (My buddy described it best: 'That paint really has depth!'). It starts with a metalic silver scale pattern on the back, and then transitions to chartruese to a salmon-orange to a flourescent green on the bottom, all the while retaining the reflective scaling above it. It also has a crappie-like speckling on the sides. (I told you I wouldn't be able to do the paint justice; hope the photos turn out below.) There are a couple of tiny drops of paint on the bait, but nothing significant, and it doesn't detract from how remarkable the paint scheme is. The bait is finished with epoxy (Envirotex, I assume), and is clear and smooth. Eyes are large and reflective, something that I like. Hooks and split rings are typical of other baits. Okay, now to the important stuff: performance. While I wasn't able to fish it long, I did notice a couple things about the bait. On a straight retrieve it swims quite nicely in a tight line (probably swinging no more than 6" per side) with a nice amount of belly roll/flash. When working it rapidly, it swung further out of line, but still had nice belly roll, and it tracked really well. It worked pretty well at slower speeds, but I couldn't see it very well due to water clarity and the bait's size (~ 4 oz) making it run deeper. When the bait got close to me I could see it working nicely with slow, light taps. It really has nice belly flash; I was initially concerned that the green belly wouldn't flash enough for my tastes, but the orange low on the sides makes up for any of that. I couldn't get the bait to run consistent at a moderate pace. That may be a characteristic of the lure, or it may be my lack of experience with gliders, or it may just be the whole water clarity thing again. I don't know; I hope to figure more out next spring. All in all, I think the bait will work great for (of all things) a search bait or as a deeper running slow-down bait. I bet it works great for trolling too, although that currently isn't something I do. The marabou inline is something that I need in my arsenal, and I was very pleased with how it runs. I have a couple similar sized baits, but neither of them start as easily or stay running as well as this one (The others are probably bad, but it's all I have for comparison). The marabou is tied with the white forward and the grey underneath; it also has a bit of silver flashabou along the shank. It has really nice pulse to it. Construction wise it has a split ring to the treble for easy replacement. I think its a real keeper. Sorry that this has gotten so long, but I wanted to be thorough. I think SuperMuskie's baits have real potential, and I would really like to have some custom painting done by him in the future. He has gotten active on the board since I posted originally, and his work really looks good.
