I have been thinking a lot lately about the benefits and practiclity of tagging muskies caught.

It seems to me that given the large number of anglers, the availability of GPS, and large nets etc., we could be tagging caught fish.

I think there would be many benefits to doing so. To name a few:
- growth of fish could be tracked as tagged fish are re-caught and measured again
- location and seasonal movements could be tracked, teaching us more about their behavior
- survivability rates in stocked lakes could be statisticaly calculated

I am no fisheries expert but I am sure there are more benefits to be had.

What do you think the pros and cons of tagging fish are/would be?

Why don't we do it more now?

For those who would argue against the gathering of GPS co-ordinates of caught fish; I would suggest a secure, confidential, online database that the info could be dumped into, with limited access to the results.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

NO WAY!!!!!!!! Best left to the professionals! And Im not talking pro fisherman. Leave it to the dnr's. If fisherman would get into tagging, you would see an incredible amount of mishandling and application of tags, and an inordinate amount of inconsitencies in measuring and reporting of statistics. I wouldnt even consider it. there is also a reason that the dnr's dont publicize when and where they are going to do their sampling. they want the sites to be as unencumbered(sp?) as possible before during and after the sampling. Its bad enough when an angler posts the exact spot where he/she caught his or her fish of a lifetime. I think the dnr's generally are generous enough when it come to disseminating the info they gather. Anglers should be able to crunch those numbers enough to find the type of waters/populations they are looking for. Just my 2cents.
