Location: Central Wisconsin | I am a member of our university fishing club so I have discounts for purefishing products. I currently have 3 rods, st.croix premier mh, TI 9ft Mh, and a MI XH. The 2 reels I have are a shimano cardiff 401, and a NaCl 61. I am looking for something with good line pick up and this is left handed, like a lexa. I looked at the NaCl HS but they only come in right handed. Are there any penn reels that fit this? |

Location: Planet Meltdown | Doesn't it suck being a lefty lol. I think I'm gonna give the Lexa 400H a try. I don't believe the HS is a good option for musky, it seems like a one trick pony with no cranking power. If your looking for a smaller, low profile reel I would recommend the Curado or Okuma Komodo. Both are really solid reels. |

Kdawg I had the same reel & used it jigging Bondy Baits & on the 3 rd trip the anti-reverse took a crap so I returned it for refund. The Penn reels are solid reels but they don't have the speed that you're looking for. |

| I'm a righty, and a couple years ago Bass Pro had a lefty Curado 300DSV on clearance for $139, and a standard righty Curado 300e for $249. I bought both, couldn't pass it up, even though I'd never used a lefty reel before.
I'm now ambidextrous for musky fishing, and actually prefer the lefty reel. Feels better having the reel in my dominant hand for figure-8s, and doesn't require me to switch hands to cast. It's also real nice being able to alternate arms during a 7 day musky fishing binge. Just need to get comfortable casting over my left shoulder, now!
So, you may actually like the righty reel better.
Oh, and I think this site is biased to lefties.. the spell checker says lefty is OK but not righty. Hmm..... lol.

Location: Central Wisconsin | Well I am a dominant right hand, but like you said when I didn't like having to switch hands everytime I cast. I might hold off then on the C4 as I have heard from other people that they have had problems as well with it. |

The C4s I owned a few years ago had trouble pulling even a small bass crankbait.
I use mine for topwaters,WTD and twitch baits. Works good |

| They at least used to sell the gearing for the 6.4. For a while they produced the 51 and 61 hs in the revo toro. They should still have a parts stock. |

| Hi all,
I am a newbie muskie fisherman. Ill be fishing mostly in Northern Wisconsin in the Minocqua area. I just received a Shimano Cardiff 400a for my birthday but I'm having second thoughts based on some of the bad reviews for it. I am on a budget, trying to stay under 150 bucks for a reel. I will not be throwing any gigantic baits, just midsize crankbaits, bucktails, topwaters, and smaller alpha dawgs. So is this Cardiff 400a going to be ok for a beginner muskie fisherman? |

Location: S.W. WI | Yes. they are fine for a beginner-part time angler. Not a lot of super durable reels in that price range. They had served me well my first several years of muskie fishing. Worked for me better than others. I still have a few I use as back ups, and when I need them- they work just fine. A Calcutta 400B would be better, but that's a $200 reel. |

If you can find a set of Revo HS gears, it will take Pikemaster 10min to mount then for you. Maybe he already has some HS gears lying around?.
Alternatively, you could have someone adding an AR clutch to the C4, then you have a reel for life. The gears on the C4, has to be changed relatively often though, if you use it for big baits. |

I have two 4-5 year old cardiffs that I have pounded on and they still work ok. good reel to begin with, decent trolling reel too. they are not the best casters and the drag is not the best, but they will work fine for most of your needs.
If you are convinced musky fishing is your thing, try and save some extra bones now for a little bit better reel like the calcutta 400b or look for a used one in your price range. |

| The author of this thread"made it clear"his words,not mine,that it had to be a Penn or Abu Reel. How did Shimano reels make it onto this thread? I'll stick with my original reply and go with a c-4. One posted that the c-4's he had couldn't even bring in a bass size crankbait. Really? Was there anybody here on this site or another recommending the c-4 for crankbaits? The reel is NOT designed for crankbaits,or other hard pulling baits. Another posted about the anti-reverse failing. I never had an anti-reverse fail on any of my Abu reels,and that's going on 35 years of use. If you use the c-4 the way it was designed with simple maintenance, you should not have any problems.
